70 militants killed in Pak operation
2009-04-29
[Bangla Daily Star] At least 70 militants were killed by the security forces while nearly 450 terrorists were holed up in Buner area, Pakistan's interior ministry chief Rehman Malik said yesterday, adding "we will not tolerate them anymore."

Pakistan deployed troops and bombed Taliban positions in a district near the capital Tuesday, the military said, in an expansion of an offensive against militants seemingly emboldened by a much-criticised peace deal.

The operation in Buner follows urgent calls from the United States for Islamabad to step up its fight against he militants, who moved into the region this month from the nearby Swat Valley. They set up checkpoints, patrolled streets and warned locals to abide by strict interpretations of Islam.

It will cause major strains on an already shaky peace deal in the Malakand region, to which Buner belongs. The truce has been widely viewed in the West as a surrender to militants slowly expanding their grip over the nuclear-armed nation.

Malik told reporters at least 70 militants had been killed in the Dir operation so far, while 450 others were still present in Buner, Geo TV reported.

On the possibility of nuclear weapons falling in Taliban hands, Malik said Pakistan's nuclear assets were safe.

He said that Lower Dir was under the complete control of security forces. However, the extremists were still active in Buner district, Dawn reported.

Addressing a seminar, Malik categorised the Taliban elements, who were active in Buner and Lower Dir as extremists.

He said, "We will not tolerate them anymore."

He said there has been an attack on the Frontier Constabulary in the past 24 hours and there have been reports of shops being looted.

"Some of the Taliban were forcing the villagers to join them," he was quoted as saying.

He added that all efforts are being made to contain the activities of these extremists who are threatening the villagers about imposing their system by force.

He warned, "No one will be allowed to challenge the writ of the government."

He reiterated that if peace was not restored in the region, the Swat peace agreement would be scrapped.

The fresh offensive by the security forces has come as Western governments, including that of the US, raised serious concerns about the peace pact in the north-western Swat region and accused the nuclear-armed country of abdicating to the Taliban.

Sufi Mohammed's Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat Muhammadi and the NWFP government Feb 16 inked a controversial peace deal under which Sharia laws would be imposed in the Malakand division in return for the Taliban laying down their arms.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari had approved the imposition of Islamic sharia law in the Malakand division and Swat April 13, nearly two months after hardline cleric Sufi Mohammad brokered a peace deal between the regional government and the rebel.

Although the government began setting up Sharia courts, the emboldened militants refused to disarm and instead expanded their control over Swat's neighbouring districts of Buner and Shangla.

6 kidnapped in Swat despite Taliban truce
2009-03-02
Militants have kidnapped six Pakistani paramilitary personnel in the Swat Valley hours after security forces rescued four abductees in Kohat.
Inconceivable!
Pro-Taliban militants in Pakistan's troubled North West Frontier Province (NWFP) kidnapped a paramilitary commander along with five of his personnel while the provincial government has negotiated a peace deal with the region's pro-Taliban insurgents. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
Inconceivable!
Local sources told Press TV that unknown armed men kidnapped a local commander of the Frontier Corps (FC), his four bodyguards and his driver from Qambar area in Swat Valley on Sunday evening.

The incident followed an operation carried out by Pakistani forces in NWFP's Kohat district during which nine militants were killed, ten were taken into custody and four hostages were released, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Commissioner Malakand conformed the kidnapping of the six, saying that the authorities were contacting Muhammad, Chief of Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat Muhammadi (TNSM) about the abduction.

Also on Sunday, two security personnel were injured when unknown militants attacked a security forces convoy in Sarbani area of the scenic valley.

It was a first attack on security forces after the recent truce and a spokesman of Pakistan Army said that the attack violated the terms of the agreement.

However, Taliban militants said that according to the deal, security forces should inform the Peace Committee before their movement.

"The security forces had not informed the members of peace committee about their movement," Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan told reporters.

The peace deal signed between Pakistani officials and militant leader Maulana Sufi Muhammad, envisages the implementation of Islamic law (Sharia), and a judicial and court system run by the militants in the region in exchange for and to the attacks on Pakistani forces and civilians.

17 banned groups warned against collecting hides
2006-12-29
The government has told the provinces to make sure that 17 banned religious and militant organisations are not able to collect the hides of sacrificial animals on Eidul Azha.
The gummint issues the same order every year. The Bad Guyz still collect the hides every year.
“The Interior Ministry has issued this directive to the four provinces and the Islamabad district administration while asking them to step up security around places where Eidul Azha prayers will be offered,” sources said.

Seventeen organisations have been banned under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997. These are Al Qaeda, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Sipah-e-Muhammad Pakistan, Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, Jaish-e-Muhammad, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat Muhammadi, Tehrik-e-Jafria Pakistan, Khudamul Islam, Islami Tehrik Pakistan, Millat-e-Islamia Pakistan, Jamiatul Furqan, Jamiatul Ansar, Hizbul Tahreer, Khairunnas International Trust, Islamic Students Movement and Balochistan Liberation Army. Jamaatud Dawa Pakistan and Sunni Tehrik are on a watch list.
So they can collect the hides and the bucks that go with selling them.
The sources said that intelligence reports submitted to the Interior Ministry warned that members of banned militant and religious outfits would try to collect hides of sacrificial animals under fake names. The militants would ask the khateebs (prayer leaders) of their sects to appeal to people in their areas to collect hides for the welfare of poor students getting religious education there, the sources said. However, the fear is that money from the hides would be used to finance terrorist activities.

The provinces have also been asked to issue directives to district authorities to keep an eye on 570 prayer leaders who, under Section 11EE of the Anti-Terrorism Act, are not allowed to leave their areas during Eidul Azha, the sources said. The Interior Ministry has also directed the authorities concerned of the four provinces and the district administration of Islamabad to mobilise officials of the Special Branch of the police to keep an eye on members of banned militant organisations, the sources said.

Tribal jirga calls Osama and Mulla Omar 'heroes'
2006-10-29
KHAR: A meeting of pro-Taliban tribal militants and elders on Saturday called Osama Bin Laden and Mulla Omar “heroes of the Muslim world” and vowed joint efforts to fight the “enemies of peace” in Bajaur Agency.

A jirga of the Mamoond tribe and local pro-Taliban militants in the Umree area of Mamoond tehsil announced that tribal people would protect Pakistan’s borders. The announcement comes days after the political administration of Bajaur Agency released nine suspected Al Qaeda militants, triggering rumours that a North Waziristan-like peace accord was also likely in Bajaur, which overlooks Afghanistan’s Kunar province where Osama and Gulbuddin Hekmatyar are suspected to be hiding. “We have no links with terrorism. We were peaceful tribesmen and we are peaceful tribesmen today,” wanted local Taliban commander Maulana Faqir Muhammad told the jirga. “We are not involved in attacks on security check posts nor are we killing security personnel. We are citizens of this country and want its development,” he added.

Faqir said the government was responsible for the law and order problem in the tribal areas. He said that Pakistan’s western border was “fully secured” when the Taliban were ruling Afghanistan and added that the Taliban’s ouster in 2001 resulted in a “serious threat” to the country’s western borders.

He said no one would be allowed to disturb peace in Bajaur Agency. He said that his comrades had no other agenda except to uphold the supremacy of Islam. He welcomed the release of nine Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat Muhammadi activists. The organisation is currently banned. He said that “jihad against the enemies of Islam” would continue. He said that Sharia could only be enforced through “practical jihad”, and not democracy.
