As Gazans clamor for aid, looting and shootings underscore new dangers
2025-06-05
[IsraelTimesJ Resumption of assistance brings a truckload of deadly issues, as competing actors struggle to safely feed Gazans amid mix of soldiers, armed gangs and terrorists clinging to power

Hundreds of trucks of food and other assistance have entered the Strip since Jerusalem began allowing aid into the Strip last month following an 11-week hiatus, Israeli officials say.

Some of the aid has gone to the US- and Israel-backed Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with a rusty iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
Humanitarian Foundation, a controversial new organization that operates four designated aid distribution centers where boxes of assistance are handed to individuals.
"controversial"
“Not one of us, darling” is always distateful.
At the same time, assistance has continued to flow via the previous mechanism coordinated by the UN and other humanitarian organizations, which handle logistics and distribution to warehouses and facilities across the Strip. While it enjoys international legitimacy, Israel says the method leaves the aid supplies vulnerable to being taken by the Hamas
..always the voice of sweet reason...
terror group, against which it is waging war.

After a blockade from March 2 to May 19, footage now shows humanitarian warehouses being restocked and aid being distributed. But the past two weeks have also seen a sharp rise in reports of looting, both spontaneous and organized, as well as violent mostly peaceful confrontations involving both Hamas operatives and Israeli forces near aid sites.

While Hamas and others have accused Israel of shooting and killing Paleostinians seeking aid, some have fingered Hamas and local gangs in Gaza as responsible for violence surrounding the aid.

According to Michael Milshtein, who heads the Paleostinian Studies Forum at Tel Aviv University’s Dayan Center, a Hamas unit known as Sahm appears to be taking brutal action against suspected looters.

"Everyone I speak with in Gaza talks about them. They are executing people left and right," Milshtein told the Times of Israel of Sahm. He said the unit was tasked with "enforcing all order" in Gaza.

A Telegram channel linked to the unit regularly publishes reports and footage of operations against alleged criminals and collaborators. Daily updates show individuals in Gaza being "handled" by Hamas mechanisms, meaning beaten or killed, reportedly for involvement in aid theft.

On Tuesday, the channel reported that Sahm had executed seven Gazooks accused of theft and collaboration with Israel.

Despite over a year and a half of war, with thousands of its fighters estimated to have been killed, Milshtein said Hamas remains "the one dominant actor in Gaza that continues to enforce order."

"It is battered, it is limited, a pale shadow of what it was on October 7, 2023 — but let’s not be mistaken, it hasn’t disappeared or vanished, not even from people’s hearts," he said. "I don’t see the classic Middle Eastern signs of a regime collapse. There is no mass surrender of Hamas, no white flags, no Hamas members being hunted down in the streets. There are protests, there are gangs, but every time I check, I don’t see indications that something fundamentally different is about to happen."

LOOTINGS SPREAD
Numerous incidents of large-scale looting have been documented across the Strip since the renewal of humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza. In some cases, looters appear to be desperate Gazook individuals, though Gaza-based social media has also documented organized raids throughout the war, often carried out by gangs, some with criminal records.

On May 25, dozens of Gazooks were filmed approaching a truck carrying humanitarian aid in central Gaza City. Gunfire was heard, and the crowd dispersed, though it remains unclear whether looting ultimately took place.

The shots are believed to have been fired by Hamas or another local security force; the IDF does not protect aid convoys inside Gaza, only maintaining a presence near the designated distribution zones managed by GHF.

Days later, footage from the overnight hours between May 27 and May 28 showed dozens of Gazooks looting a humanitarian aid truck that had arrived in the market area of Nuseirat in central Gaza. Reports indicated the truck was initially intended to deliver supplies to the north, where humanitarian organizations were to oversee an orderly distribution.

On May 28, videos circulated on social media showing hundreds of people looting a large warehouse containing what appeared to be humanitarian supplies, including sacks of flour.

Though anti-Hamas media outlets claimed the warehouse belonged to the terror group, portraying it as evidence of popular anger against Gaza’s rulers, the World Food Program — a UN organization — eventually clarified that the footage showed its Deir al-Balah warehouse. It confirmed that two people were killed during the looting, but did not disclose the circumstances of their deaths.

Hamas, which some reports accused of opening fire on the looters, denied firing on civilians.

It remains unclear whether Hamas had any role in the looting or whether it was responsible for securing the looted warehouses.

On June 1, the Israel Defense Forces released drone footage showing armed Gazook operatives firing at people attempting to pick up aid supplies in Khan Younis, accusing Hamas of trying to block aid from reaching Gazooks.

"Hamas is a brutal and murderous terrorist organization that is starving Gaza’s population. It is doing everything it can to sabotage successful food distribution in Gaza," the IDF said.

According to COGAT, the Israeli Defense Ministry unit responsible for coordinating aid into Gaza, over 1,100 truckloads of food, medicine, and medical equipment have entered the Strip through the Kerem Shalom crossing since May 19, including 157 trucks on Tuesday.

However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
the UN says it has been unable to pick up most of the trucks destined for humanitarian warehouses it supports due to unsafe roads and access issues, with only 200 truckloads retrieved from the crossing as of May 27.

Jonathan Whittall, who heads the United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the Paleostinian territories, accused Israel of attempting to impede aid deliveries.

"We face challenges in collecting goods from the Kerem Shalom crossing due to insecurity, long delays in receiving the necessary permits, being given inappropriate transport routes, and facing crowd desperation and looting — all a result of restrictions imposed by the Israeli authorities," he told news hounds. "There is no logistical solution to a political decision designed to obstruct aid."

A UN official told The Times of Israel that it avoids using armed security to guard shipments, instead relying on coordination with local community representatives to reduce looting by Gazooks. However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
the tactic becomes less effective as desperation rises.

GANGING UP
Humanitarian officials have in the past spoken of working with local clan leaders to secure shipments through areas under their nominal control, and reports have indicated that Israel has also mulled similar moves.

While details are murky, some arrangements can apparently involve protection rackets in which armed gangs of looters are paid off with a cut of the aid to keep other looters away.

In recent weeks, reports have proliferated of an gang known as Abu Shabaab, composed of members of a single family, operating near Kerem Shalom in a zone under Israeli military control. Footage published online, including by clan leader Yasser Abu Shabaab, show the gang wearing military-style uniforms with the Paleostinian flag and the words "Counter-Terrorism Mechanism" emblazoned on them.

"The Abu Shabaab story frightens me the most," said Milshtein. "It’s blatantly clear that Israel is either backing or tolerating this gang, and this reflects the worst patterns of past Israeli behavior in the Arab world — making deals with shady criminals, just like in the 1980s when Israel supported the Christian Phalangists in Leb
...The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozen flavors of Christians, plus Armenians, Georgians, and who knows what else?...
against the [Paleostine Liberation Organization]."

"Everyone I speak to in Gaza says the Abu Shabaab clan are drug pushers and thieves," he added. "Before becoming a proxy for Israel, they were looting aid convoys."

Israel has refused to answer questions about any alleged relationship with Abu Shabaab, though the two appear to share an enemy in Hamas.

On May 30, Hamas released an official video showing a group of armed, masked men operating outside a building before being blown up. Hamas claimed the group in the video were working with the IDF to inspect buildings before Israeli troops move in, without specifying whether they were Israeli or Paleostinian.

However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
online comparisons to previous images of Abu Shabaab’s gang suggested it was the same group, indicating that Hamas views the gang as a threat.

According to Milshtein, Hamas had previously killed 20 members of the clan as part of its crackdown on looters.

"Hamas will destroy them, even if it’s difficult," he said.

’DEATH TRAP’
Seeking to keep aid out the hands of Hamas, Israel and the US have backed a new aid mechanism in which assistance is distributed to Gazook individuals at sites operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Fund.

The UN and other humanitarian groups have refused to cooperate with the GHF mechanism, saying it does not comply with humanitarian principles by turning aid into a tool of Israel’s military campaign and forcing Gazooks to travel long distances through IDF lines to reach the assistance, exposing them to danger.

In recent days, those concerns have been animated by a series of deadly shootings outside a GHF distribution site in Rafah, after the IDF apparently opened fire toward Paleostinians who had approached troops after straying off a pre-approved path for reaching a Rafah distribution site.

Hamas health authorities have claimed 61 people were killed and hundreds more maimed in shootings on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The figures have not been verified and the IDF has accused the terror group of inflating them.

GHF, which has been beset by controversy, has described the reports of shootings and other violence at aid distribution sites as part of a Hamas propaganda campaign aimed at discrediting the operation, in messaging echoed by Israel and the US.

Nonetheless, GHF shut down its sites for a day on Wednesday to work out measures with the IDF to enhance security and keep future shootings from taking place.

"There are many troubling aspects to this new aid mechanism," Milshtein said. "Everything is opaque — we don’t know how much is being distributed, or what percentage of the total aid that is."

Taken together, the looting of aid trucks and issues with GHF highlight the complexities and dangers surrounding aid delivery in war-torn Gaza, as overlapping claims from the IDF, Hamas, humanitarian groups, and international organizations like the UN create a murky picture of responsibility and reality on the ground.

Milshtein argued that Hamas had managed to take advantage of that fog to create a prevailing picture of Gazooks having to risk their lives just to receive food, with Israel to blame, regardless of whether it reflects reality.

"Since Sunday, Hamas’s narrative of an ’aid massacre’ has become the dominant one globally, not just among Paleostinians," he lamented. "The UNRWA commissioner-general even called the aid distribution centers a ’death trap.’ That ultimately affects the situation on the ground — it impacts Gazooks’ motivation to come to the distribution sites."

AU Confirms Exit of Burundian Troops from Somali Town Following Flooding
2025-06-04

Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has confirmed the exit of the Burundian Defence Forces from the strategic town of Xawaadley, northwest of Mogadishu, adding that they left the area following flooding.

The statement comes after the al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
Death Eaters claimed to have captured Xawaadley village after clashing with Burundian troops, adding that they managed to run over the Forward Operating Base (FOB) within the country.

During the evacuation on Monday, the African Union said, one of the helicopters experienced a technical malfunction. However,
if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning...
despite this challenge, the pilots skilfully manoeuvred the aircraft to land safely.

"All troops and crew have been successfully evacuated to the nearest military base, and no casualties have been reported," read the statement. "AUSSOM commends the Burundian soldiers for their preparedness, which ensured a smooth and safe evacuation."

Without mentioning al-Shabaab's possible ambush, Kareem Adebayo, the Acting Special Representative of the African Union Commission Chairperson (SRCC) for Somalia, commended the troops for their continued support for the federal government of Somalia.

’’We commend the swift action of the AUSSOM Burundian troops during the delicate operation, and we reaffirm our continued support to the people and the Federal Government of Somalia in mitigating the effects of the flooding,’’ Kareem said.

This comes amid heightened al-Shabaab attacks across the country, with the government of Somalia also accused of failing to tackle the rising insurgency. The government of Somalia is accused of immersing itself in political conflicts rather than handling the al-Shabaab insurgency.

Somalia also risks defunding from the United States of America, which maintains that other partners must submit equal resources to sustain the peacekeeping mission. al-Shabaab remains a threat to stability within the Horn of Africa nations.

Al-Shabaab Claims It Shot Down Helicopter During AU Evacuation in Central Somalia

[ShabelleMedia] Somalia’s Al-Shabaab militant group has claimed responsibility for shooting down a helicopter near its stronghold in the Middle Shabelle region, during an evacuation mission by Burundian troops under the African Union’s AUSSOM mission, officials said Tuesday.

The helicopter was transporting Burundian peacekeepers from the flood-affected village of Hawadley when it went down on Monday. According to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), the aircraft suffered a mechanical failure, prompting an emergency landing near territory controlled by the al-Qaeda-linked group.

All personnel on board, including the pilot and troops, evacuated safely and were later recovered and transferred to a nearby military base. The helicopter, left behind at the site, was later captured by Al-Shabaab fighters, who have since circulated images of the wreckage and claimed responsibility for downing the aircraft.

Local sources and Somali officials could not independently verify the claim. AUSSOM maintains that the incident was due to a technical malfunction and not enemy fire.

Following the AU withdrawal, local officials reported that Al-Shabaab may have re-entered Hawadley, a strategic village near Jowhar, the capital of Hirshabelle State, where the group retains significant influence.

Kareem Adebayo, the acting Special Representative of the AU Commission Chairperson for Somalia, commended the Burundian troops for their “swift and professional response” and reaffirmed the AU’s continued support to Somalia amid worsening flooding and persistent security threats.

bully boyz in Garissa, an official said, signalling endless cooperation in the fight against the group, which controls large swathes of rural central and southern regions of Somalia.

According to intelligence reports, the bully boyz were neutralized at Najo and Guracho areas in Garissa County, following a fierce shootout with the Special Operations Group, managing to down the fighters.

The success followed a meticulously planned intelligence-led operation. The bully boyz were first spotted by a surveillance drone, after which SOG units tracked and engaged them, intelligence reports indicate, highlighting the government's commitment to stabilizing the region.

A fierce exchange of fire ensued, resulting in four Lions of Islam being eliminated. Recovered at the scene were AK-47 rifles, a PKM machine gun, multiple rounds of ammunition, and communication radios, officials said in a report filed by the County security team.

"This marks yet another major victory in a series of well-coordinated operations that continue to cripple al-Shabaab activity," the team said. "The SOG, in close collaboration with other security agencies and the local community, remains unwavering in its mission to safeguard the lives and security of Kenyans."

Kenya has been fighting bully boyz along the border for two decades, and the recent elevation of Wajir Air Base to a full-fledged base and the equipping of Modika Barracks have greatly influenced victories against al-Shabaab, thanks to the quick response by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

The KDF is also establishing several Forward Operating Bases in the region, part of a strategy aimed at enhancing security awareness and operational success. The KDF also participates in the African Union

US airstrikes in Somalia killed up to 174 people in 2025, monitoring group says
2025-06-03
[Garowe] At least 109 to 174 people have been killed in 34 U.S. airstrikes conducted in Somalia so far in 2025, according to a report released by the New America Foundation, a Washington-based policy institute that monitors American drone and airstrike campaigns worldwide.

The organization did not specify the exact number of non-combatants killed. During Trump's first term, AFRICOM carried out 219 airstrikes in Somalia that left 6-31 civilians dead, according to the report.

The rise in airstrikes coincides with an escalation in U.S. military operations against extremist groups operating in Somalia, including al-Shabaab and ISIS-Somalia. U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) has intensified its efforts to support the Somali government in counterterrorism operations across the country.

General Michael Langley, commander of AFRICOM, recently acknowledged the uptick in strikes, saying the U.S. remains committed to “disrupting and degrading” extremist networks that pose a threat to regional and international stability.

Somalia has seen a surge in violence in recent months, with U.S. airpower playing an increasingly visible role in operations aimed at dismantling insurgent strongholds in remote regions.

Human rights groups have repeatedly called for more transparency and accountability around U.S. military actions in Somalia, particularly in cases where civilian casualties are alleged.

US conducts two air strikes against ISIS in Somalia, says AFRICOM
2025-06-03
[ShabelleMedia] The United States military carried out two air strikes targeting ISIS turbans in Somalia late last week, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) said Sunday, amid ongoing efforts to counter krazed killer threats in the Horn of Africa.

The strikes took place on May 31 and June 1, 2025, approximately 72 kilometers south of the port city of Bosaso in the semi-autonomous Puntland
...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion...
region, AFRICOM confirmed in a statement.

While no casualty figures were disclosed, the command underscored the persistent threat posed by ISIS-Somalia, noting the group’s "demonstrated ability and willingness to attack U.S. forces."

"These strikes were conducted to disrupt and degrade ISIS-Somalia’s operational capacity in a remote area known to be a hub for the group," the statement added.

AFRICOM said initial assessments indicated no civilian casualties and that the strikes were carried out in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia.

The operations mark the latest in a series of U.S. military actions aimed at supporting Somali and regional forces in countering krazed killer groups, including both ISIS and the larger aShabaab'>l-Shabaab

insurgency.

ISIS-Somalia, though significantly smaller than al-Shabaab, maintains a foothold in parts of northeastern Somalia and has grabbed credit for a series of assassinations and bombings in recent years.

Houthi missile triggers sirens in wide swaths of Israel, is intercepted by IDF
2025-06-03
[IsraelTimes] Latest attack from Yemen causes no damage or injuries; alerts send millions to bomb shelters; Iran-backed group claims to target Ben Gurion Airport

Israeli air defenses intercepted a ballistic missile launched at the country by the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen on Monday night, the military said, in what has become an almost daily occurrence.

The missile set off sirens shortly before 9 p.m. across central Israel, the Jerusalem area, several West Bank settlements, and some areas in southern Israel, sending millions to bomb shelters.

Preceding the sirens by about three minutes, an early warning was issued by the Home Front Command to residents, alerting them of the long-range missile attack via a push notification on their phones.

There were no reports of injuries or damage in the attack, which marked the fourth from Yemen in the past week and the ninth in two weeks.

Footage posted to social media showed the aftermath of the missile interception, with burning shrapnel falling from the sky.

The Houthis took responsibility for Monday’s missile fire, claiming to have targeted Ben Gurion Airport.

A missile attack a day earlier also targeted the airport near Tel Aviv, the Houthis claimed. The IDF said Sunday that the projectile was intercepted, and there were no reports of damage.

Troop buildup on Somalia’s Hiiraan–Middle Shabelle border sparks fears of fresh clashes

bully boys, security sources and residents said Saturday.

The military buildup comes amid heightened tensions following weeks of festivities in the contested area, particularly around the Ceel Hareeri—Aadan Yabaal corridor.

Senior Somali National Army (SNA) officers have arrived in the region to oversee operations aimed at reclaiming territory from the jihadist group, which has recently made territorial gains in parts of Middle Shabelle.

"The forces are preparing for an offensive to push al-Shabaab out of strategic areas," a local security official told Shabelle Radio on condition of anonymity.

The federal government has also delivered new arms and supplies to the Macawiisley, a community militia allied with the SNA, in a bid to strengthen the campaign against the bully boys.

Military activity is said to be concentrated around Ceel Baraf and Aadan Yabaal, areas considered flashpoints in the conflict. Residents fear that a new round of violence could erupt at any moment.

Al-Shabaab, which has waged a bloody insurgency in Somalia for over 15 years, continues to control swathes of rural territory despite pressure from Somali and African Union

murderous Moslems.

The murderous Moslems, who still dominate central and southern regions, have been subjected to persistent airstrikes in the country over the last few months, with the ground forces encountering the group in several frontlines where the group is a thorn in the flesh.

According to reports, at least two explosions from suspected airstrikes were reported on Friday evening in the vicinity of Basra, an al-Shabaab stronghold between Bal’ad and Afgoye, a resident said, without giving many details.

Before the airstrikes, witnesses said the area was lit with bright flares. It is not clear who staged the airstrikes, but the US Africa Command is known for such missions, but strictly does them in collaboration with the federal government of Somalia.

The airstrikes are important in curtailing the movements of the murderous Moslems, giving the ground forces a technical and logistical advantage in pursuing the murderous Moslems. The US Africa Command always conducts thorough investigations.

Besides the Command, Ottoman Turkish forces have also been instrumental in the fight against al-Shabaab murderous Moslems, helping the ground forces with airstrikes. The Ottoman Turkish drones are used to target al-Shabaab with close coordination from the Gorgor troops.
Shabelle Media adds:
Several top leaders of the militant group Al-Shabaab were killed in overnight airstrikes carried out by U.S. military drones in parts of southern Somalia, Somali security officials have confirmed.

The strikes targeted areas in Lower Shabelle and Middle Juba regions, including the districts of Sablaale, Haaway, and Kunya Barrow. The operation was conducted using intelligence provided by Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), with close coordination between the Somali government and its international partners, particularly the United States.

Among those killed in the airstrikes were Hussein Fiidow, the head of Al-Shabaab’s political affairs; Abdicaziz Abu Musab, the group’s spokesperson for military operations; the group’s appointed governor for Lower Shabelle; its finance chief; and other senior commanders.

In addition to targeting leadership figures, the airstrikes destroyed an Al-Shabaab training camp, killing more than 100 fighters who were reportedly in training. Vehicles carrying explosives, allegedly intended for attacks in Mogadishu, were also destroyed in the attack.

Gunmen launch overnight attack on key security checkpoint near Mogadishu
2025-05-31
[ShabelleMedia] Unidentified button men launched a surprise attack overnight on a military checkpoint in Ceelhuur, a strategic area on the outskirts of the Somali capital, security sources said Friday.

The checkpoint, located along the route connecting the Lower Shabelle region to Mogadishu via Jazeera, plays a vital role in screening vehicles entering the capital for explosives and illegal weapons.

The attack occurred late Thursday night, though the extent of casualties and damage remains unclear, and no group has yet grabbed credit.

According to local sources, government forces stationed at the checkpoint repelled the ambush, which targeted the position used to monitor and control the flow of vehicles from volatile southern regions.

"This checkpoint is a key line of defense for Mogadishu," one official told Radio Shabelle on condition of anonymity. "It is designed to intercept threats before they reach the city."

The incident comes amid heightened security in and around Mogadishu, where authorities have been on high alert for possible bad boy attacks by al-Shabaab

rebels, significantly escalating threats to maritime traffic and regional stability in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and western Indian Ocean.

A detailed report published by the Africa Center stated that the collaboration has enhanced both groups' capacity to disrupt international shipping and challenge security across critical waterways.

(AQAP), further expanding the group’s tactical capabilities.

"This growing collaboration in weapons, technology, and training poses a serious concern for the security of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait," the report stated. Analysts also warned that the alliance complicates surveillance along a vulnerable 1,800-mile stretch of coastline spanning the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and western Indian Ocean.

A former U.S. State Department official cautioned that continued American disengagement from Somalia could create opportunities for al-Shabaab to expand its operations into neighboring Kenya and Æthiopia, while further solidifying its ties with the Houthis.

"This isn’t just a regional threat—it could eventually impact global trade and maritime security if left unchecked," the official said.
Shabelle Media adds:
According to a report cited by The Washington Post, the Houthis have dispatched bomb-making experts to Jilib, a stronghold of Al-Shabaab in Somalia’s Middle Juba region, signaling a new and dangerous phase in regional militancy.

The report suggests that the two groups have strengthened their ties, coordinating the movement of weapons and fighters via the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean—routes increasingly monitored by U.S. naval forces deployed to counter Houthi expansionism.

“This kind of cooperation opens the door to the exchange of highly lethal technologies,” a former senior U.S. State Department official told The Washington Post, adding that Washington’s reduced presence in Somalia may have created a security vacuum that the militants are now exploiting.

There are growing fears that Al-Shabaab, emboldened by this new support, could stage attacks beyond Somalia’s borders, particularly in Kenya and Ethiopia, using weapons and explosives supplied by the Houthis.

Intelligence sources have warned that a potential withdrawal of U.S. troops from Somalia could seriously undermine years of progress in stabilizing the country and combating Al-Shabaab, which has waged an insurgency for more than 16 years.
