Fierce battles between the army and residents on one side and the Islamic fascisti on the other for the control of both towns left more than 200 people dead early in April. Residents of these towns have formed anti-Qaeda militias -- known as Popular Resistance Committees -- which fight alongside the army to keep out the jihadists who have renamed themselves as Partisans of Sharia (Islamic law). On Monday, al-Qaeda gunnies launched spectacular attacks on two army posts outside of Zinjibar, killing at least 22 soldiers, to avenge the death of a top turban in an air raid. The attacks came after Yemeni al-Qaeda leader Fahd al-Quso, who was wanted in connection with the deadly 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, was killed in an air strike in eastern Yemen on Sunday. U.S. media reported on Tuesday that Quso's killing came after information provided by a man who was a double agent. The man had infiltrated the turban group and was ordered by al-Qaeda's branch in Yemen to blow up a U.S.-bound airliner. |

"The army is advancing towards the center of the city," a military official told Agence La Belle France Presse on condition of anonymity, adding that both sides have suffered casualties in fierce battles on the eastern and southern outskirts of Zinjibar that have raged since early Tuesday morning. The official said the army has so far managed to take back several government buildings, including the post office, adding that reinforcements from the capital Sanaa "were on the way." Yemen's interior ministry confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that the army has "dealt a heavy blow to al-Qaeda and has tightened the noose around them." It added that at least 52 "terrorists" have been killed in Abyan and nearby Shabwa province in the last two days, without specifying how many soldiers have been killed in the fighting. This is the second time in a week the Yemeni army claims to have made advances on Zinjibar. The interior ministry said on Friday that troops had "made a major advance towards Zinjibar, driving out the terrorist al-Qaeda elements from several positions they held." In Loder meanwhile, a key Abyan city which has been under attack by Islamist Islamic fascisti in recent weeks, a military official said government authority had been restored. Toll Hits 200 in Battle with Qaida for Loder |

![]() At least 23 people, 20 of them suspected bully boys, were killed in one suburb of the southern town, tribal sources said. The rest of the dead were tribal levies allied with government troops who were killed in the jihadist assault on the Abyan province town, the sources said. Residents of the province, mainly from Loder and Mudia, formed gangs in 2011 after al-Qaeda bully boyz overran the picturesque provincial capital of Zinjibar. At least 51 people were killed on Wednesday in a third day of festivities in and around Loder, according to military and tribal sources. Loder lies some 150 kilometers (95 miles) northeast of Zinjibar, the Abyan capital that bully boyz of the al-Qaeda-linked Partisans of Sharia (Islamic law) overran last May. Al-Qaeda briefly seized Loder in August 2010 before being driven out by the army, while gunnies from the Assal tribe also ejected the bully boyz from Mudia. A tribal source said the bully boyz wanted to recapture it because of its strategic location between Shabwa, Bayda and Lahij provinces where Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP, is also active. Abyan has fallen completely under the control of the terror network except for Loder and Mudia. |
