2010-12-17 | |||||||
[Bangla Daily Star] ![]() There are Purbo's left in B-desh? The RAB hasn't gotten them all?
We have no idea where that is ...
The story seems out of order. Doesn't that part come at the end?
A little early for the RAB, unless they were doing a double ... where Musa along with his accomplices were holding a clandestine meeting.
My spider sense! It's tingling again! To arms! Aux barricades! the gang opened Of course the RAB retaliated, they weren't out there for their health ... that triggered a 'shootout'. Yep, meets all the criteria for a 'shootout', especially the deader ... At one stage, the outlaws
managed to flee the scene. ... as though they had never been... Later, police recovered the bullet-hit body of Musa lying on the ground, right where they left him ... reports our Kushtia correspondent. Two light guns, four bombs, five rounds of bullets and two sharp weapons were recovered from the spot. Does a pair of garden shears count as one sharp weapon or two ...

Our Pabna correspondent reports, Paban was scrubbed in a 'shootout' between Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and his cohorts in Ishwardi upazila early Wednesday. Is that closer to Kushtia or Bagerhat? Hailing from Baraichara village of the upazila Paban was accused in several cases including murder most foul and robbery charges, claimed Rab. Rab-12 Pabna Camp Commander Lt Commander TAH Mahmud said acting on a tip off from the always reliable Mahmoud the Weasel that Paban was holding a secret meeting in the dead of night with his accomplices at a field in his village, they conducted a raid in the area. "Sergeant Rafiq! Load up the men!" Spider senses tingling at the proximity of the elite force, Paban and his associates opened fire on them, prompting them to retaliate with fire, Mahmud added. After nearly a 20-minute 'shootout', Rab found Paban lying in a pool of blood, he added. "Whose blood was it, Captain?" The accomplices of Paban, according to Rab, who opened fire on them, managed to flee the scene ... as though they had never been leaving three guns and eight bullets on the spot. On March 25, 2007
Siddique Pramanik, a Janajuddha operative, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning hours after a bomb attack on him in Ataikula upazila of Pabna. Md Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Ataikula Police Station, suspected that the rivals of Siddique might have hurled bombs on him around 2:00am while he came out of his Choradanga residence responding their calls. Siddique sustained severe injuries in the bomb attack and was rushed to Pabna Sadar Hospital where he died at about 8:00am. Unknown assailants chopped Bishu Pramanik to death Wednesday afternoon at Halbaria Boalia bazaar in Santhia. Officer-in-charge (OC) of Santhia cop shoppe Md Robiul Islam primarily suspected that the party rivals might have killed him over a tolls collection row. In another incident, assailants chopped Md Khokon of Satgachha village in Atghoria around 4:00pm on the day while the victim came out of his house to have a dip in the nearby pond. Atghoria OC Abu Hanif suspected the killing occurred in sequel to intra-party feuds. Meanwhile, ...back at the ranch... a correspondent from Cox's Bazar adds, an alleged local criminal was killed in a shootout with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab)-7 at Kalabagan area under Eidgah union of Cox's Bazar Sadar upazila in early Wednesday. Rashed Uddin Chowdhury Babar, 35 of Meherghora village accused in 23 cases including murder, robbery and other criminal activities, was killed round 3.30 am.
Babar was a son of late freedom fighter Master Syedul Alam Chowdhury of Uttar Maijpara village under Eidgah union. He was the joint convenor of "Amra Muktijoddar Santan" and a former leader of upazila Chhatra League.
Cox's Bazar Model police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shahjahan confirmed the incident. He said the Rab members recovered a locally made LG, a long machete and three bullet cartridges from the spot. | |||||

2009-12-09 |
[Bangla Daily Star] At least 10 people including three policemen were injured in a gunfight between police and the members of Janajuddha, a faction of outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party, at Gurpipul Jojaipara in Tarash upazila yesterday. Outlaw killed in shootout |
2009-11-10 |
![]() Superintendent of police at Pabna Nibash Chandra Majhi described Md Kamruzzaman Oli, 45, as the kingpin of crime in Pabna. A commie and a kingpin. I bet he doesn't do children's birthday parties, though... As well as being wanted for three murders, Oli had been involved in outlawed groups since the 1990s. He was the current chief of the outlawed Janajuddha, a faction of the Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) in Pabna, and he was the chairman of Hadal union parishad. My guess parishad is a name for a rules making commitee... Oli had been in hiding since the caretaker government came to power in 2007. "Sergeant: What has Oil been hiding from all these years?" "7.62mmx39 would be my guess, sir!" Md Abu Jafar, officer-in-charge of Faridpur Police Station, said, "There were three warrants for his arrest. He was the top outlawed operative in this region." Someone always has to take down number one. After receiving a tip-off about a secret meeting being held by Oli and faction members, police cordoned off an area in Hadal union at around 12:25am on Monday. Early day for the RAB warrant squad, I see... The criminals opened fire on the police when they raided the premises of 'Nuru Khar Bat-tala', and the ensuing gunfight lasted over half an hour. The police fired 37 rounds of bullets at the criminals. Two of which were pre-placed behind Oil's right ear ... Oli died of his wounds at the scene of the 'shootout', while the rest of the criminals managed to flee, police said. Sergeant, please schedule some range time. Only a single hit for 37 rounds of bullets is pretty bad. Makes us sound like OU's place kicker our shooting's so bad. |

"In the name of Crossfire, I quit!" |
2009-11-06 |
[![]() Being on the wrong end of a shutter gun tends to weigh on the mind Sources have confirmed the outlaws are requesting AL local leaders to convince the government to give them an option to surrender like in 1999. "As the law enforcers are causing much trouble and killing our members in the name of crossfire, our top bosses are asking local ruling party leaders to arrange our surrender," said a Gono Mukti Fouz (GMF) leader asking not to be named. In 1999, the then Awami League government offered the outlaws an opportunity to surrender and arranged it through ceremonies in the region. Although many of the outlaws surrendered, the problems remain unresolved as many of them later returned to their previous life again. Around 2,700 outlaws responded to the previous offer and surrendered with 2,100 firearms. Over 500 outlaws were rehabilitated in the Ansar Battalion on temporary basis, but more than 300 of them disappeared and returned to their previous occupations of killing, mugging and other modes of crime. Sources in the home ministry say there is pressure from Ansar not to rehabilitate any outlaws in the force this time as many of those rehabilitated in 1999 deserted the force later. But the situation is different this time as deaths in so-called shootouts or crossfire have been occurring for the last five years. Some of the well-known top tier leaders including Mofakkar Chowdhury and Dr Mizanur Rahman Tutul were killed in similar fashion during the BNP-Jamaat rule. A number of dreaded outlaw leaders were also killed in 'crossfire' or 'shootouts' with law enforcers. Only infamous outlaws like 'Kashai' Siraj and Laltu who killed scores of people, many by burning alive in brick kilns, are still in jail since they surrendered in 1999. I'd chuck them in the same kiln, but that's just me The current leadership in Kushtia fears they might face the same fate of 62 'comrades', who were killed in 'shootouts' since the ongoing crackdown on outlaws began on August 22. The Prime Minister's Office gave the order for massive crackdown on the outlaws due to a serious slide in law and order in the region marked by frequent killings. Sources say against this backdrop, leaders of different factions of outlawed outfits and underground parties now consider surrender and return to "normal" life. Home Minister Sahara Khatun on October 12 informed the House the government would soon announce its surrender offer so that the outlaws may return to "normal" life. Must have received a new shipment of "scare quotes". However, cross-section of people expressed dismay over the government move and said giving such opportunities might be "futile" like in 1999. Members of the law-enforcement agencies are also against the surrender move right now and are eager to continue the operation to arrest the outlaws. "We want to see an end to the outlaw problem and want security to our lives," said a local businessman wishing anonymity. And nothing cuts down repeat offenders like a round of bullet The government should continue "crossfire" to eliminate outlaws and take tough legal measures to bring their political patrons to book, people of the region demand. CADRES AND ARMS STRENGTH A list prepared in September-November last year on 13 underground parties and crime rackets mentions names of 2,847 cadres and their godfathers, mostly from 23 southwest and northwest districts. The list also includes names of 80 kingpins and 150 patrons from mainstream politics. Sources in Rapid Action Battalion could not say for sure how many firearms the outlaws, underground parties and crime rackets posses but hinted that every active member has at least one gun. Which is kept in a velvet lined case at RAB HQ and is lovingly placed next to their bullet riddled body However, a report prepared by a law-enforcement agency around a year ago gives some specific impression about the strength of some of those underground parties. Purba Banglar Communist Party's (PBCP) ML-Janajuddha faction has 50 to 60 active cadres. The outfit has firearms like M16 and AK47 assault rifles, .303 rifles, 9 shooters, shotguns, single and double barrel guns, locally made and foreign pistols and revolvers and light guns (LG). PBCP (ML-Red Flag) cadres possess AK47 rifles, single and double barrel guns, local and foreign pistols and revolvers, LGs and bombs. PBCP (ML mainstream or followers of Mofakkar) has around 50 armed cadres, who use Indian and locally manufactured arms and bombs. Biplabi Communist Party (Haque Group) has over 50 armed cadres, who have AK47, 9 shooter guns, single and double barrel guns, local and foreign pistols and revolvers, LGs and bombs. The report states that most of the firearms and ammunition are smuggled in from India, though some underground parties smuggle weapons from Myanmar through Bandarban and Cox's Bazar borders. Funny they never seem to find those AK47's after the "crossfires". Must have been carried off by the elusive "Cadres of the Night". |

Outlaw dons call shots from India |
2009-11-05 |
[Bangla Daily Star] Jogoti Union unit Jubo League president Zafar Ahmed went missing on July 25 last year. As his family started a frantic search for him, his uncle received a phone call from India the next day. "You don't need to look for Zafar anymore; go back home and get ready for his burial," said the caller as quoted by one of Zafar's friends. The caller was none but Shahin, second-in-command of outlawed Gono Mukti Fouz (GMF). The traumatised family decided to file a general diary with the local police and sent two members to the nearby police station. When they were hardly 100 yards from the police station, they received another call from the same Indian number. The caller, as if he had been observing them from a nearby watchtower, said," You are just 100 yards from the police station and are going to file a GD. "If you file any case or a GD, I'll kill you as well as Zafar's father this time. Whatever you do I'll surely know as I have 260 paid informers there," the caller threatened. The victim's family members knew it was not an idle threat and retreated instantly. They later considered themselves 'fortunate' to find Zafar's body in a water body a few kilometres from their village next week. During the phone conversations Shahin said they gave "death penalty" to Zafar two years ago at their self-styled court on charge of helping police arrest a bodyguard of GMF boss Aminul Islam Mukul. Zafar's friend was talking about the horror at a restaurant in Bottoil on the outskirts of the town. Suddenly he sensed a waiter "spying" on him and whispered to this correspondent, "Leave the place immediately. The waiter might be a paid agent of Mukul-Shahin. We'll be in trouble then." The network of different active outlawed outfits in 10 southwestern districts, especially in Kushtia, Jhenidah, Chuadanga and Meherpur, is very strong. Sources say their men have infiltrated every place -- from remote villages to government offices and from roadside restaurants to police stations. The armed cadres of these outlawed groups have long been engaged in murder, drugs trafficking, robbery, extortion, abduction and controlling tenders. The people in the region have often witnessed murder of sons and rape of daughters before parents and burning of people alive in the blaze of brick kilns. After committing a murder the outlaws even dumped sliced parts of the bodies in the victims' houses and sometimes the severed limbs in front of government offices. For this brutal works they have separate killing groups. Not less than 285 people were killed in the 10 southwest districts this year, most of them at the hands of rival groups. The slide in law and order prompted the government to crack down on the outlaws on August 22 and since then 62 were killed in 'shootouts'. The death toll in so-called shootouts increased significantly since the crackdown as only 11 suspected outlaws died in that manner earlier this year. The law and order also marks significant improvement, but people are still frightened as kingpins of the outlawed groups are still at large. According to Rapid Action Battalion, thirteen factions of armed communist groups and as many gangs named after the ringleaders concerned are operating in 23 districts of Khulna, Rajshahi, Dhaka and Barisal divisions. A dangerous situation prevails in Kushtia, Chuadanga, Meherpur and Jhenidah where JSD Gonobahini, GMF and Biplabi Communist Party, Red Flag faction of Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-M-L) are active. Abdur Rashid Malitha alias Dada Tapan-led Janajuddha faction of PBCP was also a strong group in the region but has weakened after the arrest and death of Tapan and his second-in-command. Rab says these outlawed groups possess a huge number of firearms including sophisticated M16 and AK47 rifles, but no-one knows exactly how many weapons they have. |

![]() The deceased were identified as Arifur Alam Akkas, 45, a pirate active in the Sundarbans, Murad Hossain alias Bhola, 40, a leader of outlawed Gano Bahini, and Hasan Ali alias Hasan Kosai, 32, a cadre of Janajuddha. Police said Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) personnel arrested Akkas, accused in a number of cases, from his Khalishpur residence in Khulna city Friday evening. As per his statement, Rab and police took him to an abandoned hospital at Hatiadanga village in Koira upazila to recover arms on the night. When the law-enforcers reached the village, the associates of Akkas opened fire on them triggering a gunfight. Akkas was caught in the line of fire while trying to flee and died on the spot, police said. They said two police and two Rab men were also injured during the gunfight. Two guns and six bullets were recovered from the spot. In Kushtia, acting on a tip-off police raided Kaya Child Heaven School where a group of Gano Bahini men were holding a meeting at about 4:30am yesterday. Sensing the presence of police, the outlaws opened fire at them prompting them to fire back. At one stage, the outlaws managed to flee the scene. Police later found the body of Murad lying on the ground. Police recovered a shutter gun and two bullets from the spot. According to police, Murad was accused in 11 cases, including six for murder. Our Pabna correspondent says: Police raided Shimulchhora area in Sadar upazila after receiving information that the outlaws of Janajuddha were holding a meeting there early yesterday. As soon as they reached Shimulchhora around 2:00am, the outlaws started firing at the law enforcers forcing them to retaliate. Hasan, wanted in a number of cases, was killed during the gunfight, police said. He was also a convicted fugitive sentenced to 32 years' imprisonment in a murder case, police added. |
