The police said the bullet-riddled body of a man was found at a place near the Kati Pahari area. The man appears to be in his early-30s.

The slain man was a resident of gangs-infested Afshani Gali. He was a peaceful citizen and might have been targeted by gangsters over suspicion of being an 'informer', said SSP-City Sheeraz Nazeer.

He added that another motive for the killing might be some personal enmity.

IJT activist killed in Gulshan

An activist of the Islami Jamiat Talba was shot dead on main University Road, police said on Tuesday.

The Gulshan-i-Iqbal police said that 19-year-old Adeel Atif was killed by armed muggers as he offered resistance. However, the Jamaat-i-Islami termed it an incident of targeted killing.

The police said that the teenager was travelling along with his mother in a car when robbers intercepted them on main University Road near Safari Park late on Monday night.

As the teenager put up resistance, the robbers fired at him and fled.

He sustained critical bullet wounds in the chest and died.

However, SSP-East Pir Mohammad Shah said that police were investigating the case from different angles.

He said that the incident occurred at the curve of an elevated U-turn on University Road, where incidents of armed robbery were uncommon.

Quoting the statement of a witness, the SSP said that the teenager's car hit some motorcyclists who fell on the road. Later, the bikers and the teenager were seen having an argument after which they fired shots at him and fled.

The JI disputed the police claim that the teenager was killed by bandits and said that he was killed in a targeted attack.

[Dawn] Tribesmen of Kohat division on Monday said they could take Dire Revenge™ of the killing of around 28 Mighty Pak Army men in a NATO

cross-border air strike with the government and the army's consent.

During a news conference here on Monday, tribal elders from Kurram Agency

and Frontier Region of Kohat condemned the NATO attack and said eight million people of the mountainous region were ready to give a befitting reply to the aggressor if the government and the army asked them to do so.

They said the rustics won't tolerate violation of the country's airspace or border by the NATO or US forces in future.

The tribal elders accused the NATO and the US of criminally undermining the gains of the Pak security forces against terrorism and said provocative attacks by Afghanistan-based foreign forces were killing innocent people and soldiers.

They said instead of acknowledging Pakistain's sacrifices against terrorism, the US had been blaming its defeat in Afghanistan on Mighty Pak Army for political gains at home.

On the occasion, elders from Darra Adam Khel complained that political administration charged a primitive Rs570 for national computerised identity card, Rs500 for domicile and Rs2,000 for transfer of Rs100,000 worth of land but didn't ensure provision of health, education, water and sanitation facilities in the area.

Agency.

Led by district president Dr Farooq Akram Khan, ANP workers staged a demonstration in front of Mardan Press Club, while IJT activists marched through the city's different bazaars from the College Chowk to the press club.

They held banners and placards inscribed with slogans against the NATO and the US, and demanded a strong response from Pakistain to the NATO.

The protestors said the NATO attacked the illusory sovereignty of Pakistain and violated the UN charter and international law. They said Pakistain had given more sacrifices than the US and NATO in the war against terrorism but unfortunately, they all had gone unacknowledged.

In Nowshera, people from different walks of life on Monday condemned the deadly NATO strike on a border post in Mohmand Agency and urged the government to permanently cut supplies to the foreign forces in Afghanistan.

Lawyers boycotted court proceedings against the attack declaring it a violation of the country's illusory sovereignty. They appealed the people to pressure the government not to restore NATO supplies passing through Pakistain.

Leaders of political parties also condemned the attack and demanded an apt response from the government and its security forces.

MMA, PML-N strike call fails
2007-06-16
Commercial activities continued in major commercial areas across the city as most of the people of Karachi ignored the call for a commercial strike on Friday by the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

The opposition parties had called for a commercial strike to protest the killings of Wasif Aziz, a member of the Islami Jamiat Talba and the United Students Front, and of Hashmat Bangash, a member of the PML-N.

The big markets in Saddar and M. A. Jinnah Road stayed open. The areas that were the scenes of violent protests against power outages also turned a deaf ear to the strike call. Shopkeepers chose to continue business as usual at Lasbela, Patel Para and Guru Mandir, where MMA leaders used to address supporters.

Traffic was normal in most parts of the city except for a few localities. Transporters remained divided because Karachi Transport Ittehad (KTI), the main group of transport owners, did not back the call for a wheel-jam strike. “Political parties must realize that the transport belongs to us. As long as the police and government protect us we’ll ply on the roads,” said KTI President Irshad Bukhari. Interestingly, Bukhari, who had been critical of the MQM in the past, appreciated the city nazim and the governor who are both part of the MQM.

Sources in the undeclared joint opposition said that the lack of support from the Awami National Party (ANP) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was one of the reasons the strike was unsuccessful. Support from some ethnic parties, however, brought partial suspension of commercial activities in Gulistan-e-Johar.

IJT slams minister for "secularising" education curriculum
2005-12-24
The Islami Jamiat Talba (IJT) protested and blocked GT road on Thursday to condemn Javed Ashraf Qazi, the federal education minister, for making secular changes to the educational curriculum, said Zubair Ahmad Gondal, the IJT central chief.

The students chanted slogans and displayed banners inscribed with statements against the federal government’s pro-US policies and frequent changes in the educational curriculum. Said Rasool, a protestor, said that after 9/11, the government was bent upon secularising the education system in the country by various tactics. He said the introduction of the Aga Khan Board and deletions of Quranic verses pertaining to jihad were part of such tactics.

The protestors demanded the federal government expel Javed Ashraf from the cabinet for his secular and anti-Islamic ideas and practices. They threatened that if the secular changes made recently in the curriculum were not reversed, they would start an unending series of protests.
