US says new Syrian government will help locate missing Americans |
2025-05-26 |
[X] President Trump makes it clear HTS needs to pay to play.
Syria agrees to help US find missing citizens: Envoy [Rudaw] Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa (right) meeting US Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack (left) in Istanbul on May 24, Syria’s interim government has agreed to help the United States find its missing citizens or their remains, the US special envoy said on Sunday, a day after meeting interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa. “A powerful step forward. The new Syrian government has agreed to assist the USA in locating and returning USA citizens or their remains. The families of Austin Tice, Majd Kamalmaz, and Kayla Mueller must have closure,” Tom Barrack, who also serves as the US ambassador to Turkey, said on X. Barrack met Sharaa and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani in Istanbul on Saturday after Washington lifted sanctions on Damascus, discussing a host of topics including investment opportunities and joint security cooperation. Tice, a freelance journalist for outlets such as AFP and The Washington Post, has been missing in Syria since 2012 after being detained at a checkpoint. Kamalmaz, a Syrian-American psychologist from Virginia, vanished in Syria in 2017 after being stopped at a regime checkpoint, and aid worker Mueller was kidnapped by the Islamic State (ISIS), which announced her death in a Jordanian airstrike in 2015, but her death remains disputed by Washington. “President Trump has made it clear that bringing home USA citizens or honoring, with dignity, their remains is a major priority everywhere. The new Syrian Government will aid us in this commitment,” Barrack said. An informed Syrian source told AFP that 11 Americans are on Washington’s list for a search mission for the remains of Americans killed by ISIS in Syria. During a trip to the Middle East last week, Trump announced his decision to lift sanctions on Syria. The next day, Trump met with Sharaa during a summit in Riyadh, hosted by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and attended remotely by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Trump urged Sharaa to normalize relations with Israel, expel all “foreign terrorists” from Syria, and cooperate with the US to prevent an ISIS resurgence, according to a White House statement. On Friday, the US Treasury issued the Syria General License (GL) 25 to effectively lift all sanctions. Since taking office in January after toppling the regime of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, the new leadership in Damascus has made lifting international sanctions a top priority. While several countries have expressed openness to removing Assad-era restrictions, they have emphasized the need for the new leadership to meet critical benchmarks such as inclusive governance and fighting terrorism. |

After Trump announcement, Treasury Department says US formally lifting Syria sanctions
2025-05-25 | |
[IsraelTimes] Sweeping economic relief doesn’t include removal of Sharaa’s HTS from terror blacklist; some US officials pushed for phased approach that would include normalizing ties with Israel The Trump administration granted Syria sweeping exemptions from sanctions Friday in a big first step toward fulfilling the president’s pledge to lift a half-century of penalties on a country shattered by 13 years of civil war. While broad, the administration’s actions could possibly be reversed. Syrians say they need permanent relief to secure the tens of billions of dollars in investment needed to rebuild after a conflict that fragmented the country, displaced or killed millions of people, and left behind thousands of imported muscle.
Trust but verify. And quietly watch where the money flows… Syria is now led by Ahmad al-Sharaa, a former militia commander who helped drive longtime autocratic leader Bashir Pencilneckal-Assad Terror of Aleppo ... from power late last year. President Donald Trump ...They hit him with slander, they impeached him twice. Nancy Pelosi tore up his State of the Union address on national TV. They stole an election and put his adherents in jail. They vilified him. They couldn't crucify him, so they shot him. Still, they can't keep him down... announced last week that the US would roll back the heavy financial penalties in a bid to give the interim government a better chance of survival. The Trump administration said businesses and investors are getting the protection against sanctions they need to come back to Syria, calling it "the opportunity for a fresh start." "The only other option was Syria becoming a failed state and civil war," said Mouaz Moustafa, a Syrian American advocate who had campaigned for quick, broad relief. "Now there is hope for a future democratic Syria." The congressional sanctions, known as the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act, had aimed to isolate Syria’s previous rulers by effectively expelling those doing business with them from the global financial system. They specifically block postwar reconstruction, so while they can be waived for 180 days by executive order, investors are likely to be wary of reconstruction projects when sanctions could be reinstated after six months. The Trump administration said Friday’s actions were "just one part of a broader US government effort to remove the full architecture of sanctions." Those penalties had been imposed on the Assad family for their support of Iranian-backed militias, their chemical weapons ...have not been used since WWI except for in Iraq, by the late, unlamented Saddam Hussein and in Syria, but really, honest, not by the Syrian government. And in Germany in WWII, but that was against civilians. Lots of them, just one of many reasons Hitler's also late and unlamented... program and abuses of civilians. TRUMP ADMINISTRATION SAYS IT EXPECTS ACTION FROM SYRIA US Secretary of State Marco Rubio ...The diminutive 13-year-old Republican U.S. Senator from Florida, Secretary of State in the second Trump administration... said in a statement Friday that in return for sanctions relief, Trump expects "prompt action by the Syrian government on important policy priorities." Al-Sharaa’s own past has fueled doubts. The group that he led, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else ...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State... , was originally affiliated with al-Qaeda, although it later renounced ties and took a more moderate tone. It is still listed by the US as a terrorist organization. But if al-Sharaa’s government fails, the US and others fear renewed conflict in Syria and a power vacuum that could allow a resurgence of the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allaharound with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not reallyMoslems.... and other bad boy groups. "If we engage them, it may work out, it may not work out. If we do not engage them, it was guaranteed not to work out," Rubio told politicians this week. Trump met al-Sharaa last week in Saudi Arabia ![]() , a day after announcing his intention to lift the sanctions: "We’re taking them all off. Good luck, Syria. Show us something special." Rubio said sanctions relief must start quickly because Syria’s transition government could be weeks from "collapse and a full-scale civil war of epic proportions." But asked by politicians this week what sanctions relief should look like overall, Rubio gave a one-word explanation: "Incremental." DEBATE WITHIN THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION While some sanctions can be quickly waived through executive actions like those taken Friday, Congress would have to permanently remove the penalties it imposed. Some Trump administration officials have been pushing for relief as fast as possible without demanding tough conditions first. Others have proposed a phased approach, giving short-term waivers right away on some sanctions then tying extensions or a wider executive order to Syria meeting tough conditions. Critics said that could slow or prevent longer-term relief, hindering the interim government’s ability to attract investment and rebuild. Proposals circulated among administration officials, including one shared this week that broadly emphasized taking all action possible, as fast as possible, to help Syria rebuild, according to a US official familiar with the plan who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. Another proposal — from State Department staff — that circulated last week suggested a three-phase road map, starting with short-term waivers and then laying out sweeping requirements for future phases of relief or a permanent lifting of sanctions, the official said. Removing "Paleostinian terror groups" from Syria is first on the list of conditions to get to the second phase. Supporters of sanctions relief say that might be impossible, given the subjectivity of determining which groups meet that definition and at what point they can be declared removed. Other conditions for moving to the second phase are for the new government to take custody of detention facilities housing Islamic State fighters and to move forward on absorbing a US-backed Kurdish force into the Syrian army. To get to phase three, Syria would be required to join the Abraham Accords — normalized relations with Israel — and to prove that it had destroyed the previous government’s chemical weapons. Israel has been suspicious of the new government, although Syrian officials have said publicly that they do not want a conflict with Israel. Since Assad fell, Israel has launched hundreds of ... KABOOM!... s and seized a UN-patrolled buffer zone in Syria. Damascus is preparing to take control of al-Hol camp |
2025-05-25 |
It will be interesting to see whether the HTS government absorbs the ISIS fighters into their ranks or sees them as the undesirable other. [Rudaw] The Syrian government will assume control of al-Hol and shift focus to rehabilitation of the thousands of suspected Islamic State![]() Allaharound with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not reallyMoslems.... (ISIS) sympathizers and family members being held in the camp in northeast Syria, an Interior Ministry spokesperson said on Saturday. "Regarding the al-Hol camp issue, it is part of the agreement signed between the Presidency of the Syrian Arab Republic and the Syrian Democratic Forces, which stipulates that the Syrian Arab Republic will assume control over all areas in the Syrian Jazira region - namely, in Hasakah and Raqqa areas," Interior Ministry spokesperson Nouraldeen Albaba told Rudaw in a presser on Saturday. The goal will be to ensure the camp is no longer a source of unrest and extremism. "Now, it will become a comprehensive societal rehabilitation dossier targeting the victims and families of individuals who joined ISIS," he said. Al-Hol camp in Hasaka province is infamous for its squalid conditions and has been branded a breeding ground for terrorism. Iraqis and Syrians make up the majority of the 40,000 ISIS-linked people who have been held at the camp since the defeat of the group in 2019. There are also people in the camp from around the world who had traveled to join the so-called ISIS caliphate. A delegation from the Syrian government visited al-Hol camp on Saturday, according to local media. The delegation consisted of 10 people and was the first visit to the camp by the interim government. They were also joined by representatives from the US-led global coalition against ISIS, Ronahi TV reported. The purpose of the visit was to inspect conditions in the camp and explore returning Syrian nationals to their home regions, according to Ronahi, which is affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The Kurdish-led administration in northeast Syria (Rojava) in January announced that its doors are open to the "voluntary return" of Syrians in the camp to their hometowns. Iraq has been repatriating its nationals in groups, putting them through a rehabilitation program before they return to their original homes. Rojava authorities also have thousands of ISIS fighters detained in jails. United States President Donald Trump ...Perhaps no man has ever had as much fun being president of the US... , when he met interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa last week, urged him to assume responsibility for ISIS detention centres in Rojava. The newly-appointed US envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack noted progress Damascus has taken on meeting Trump’s request when he met Sharaa in Istanbul on Saturday. Sulaimani security forces arrest three ISIS suspects |

[Rudaw] Three suspected members of the Islamic State![]() Allaharound with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not reallyMoslems.... (ISIS) were arrested by Kurdish security forces (Asayish) in separate operations in Sulaimani province, the Asayish said on Friday. "In three separate operations and in coordination with the Iraqi national security forces, three wanted holy warriors were arrested in the areas of Sulaimani, Chamchamal, and Sharazur," Colonel Salam Abdulkhaliq, head of the Sulaimani-based Asayish media team, told Rudaw. All three suspects "were active members of the ISIS organization," Abdulkhaliq said. ISIS seized control of swathes of Iraqi land in 2014. The group was declared territorially defeated in 2017 but it continues to carry out bombings, hit-and-run attacks, and abductions. The snuffies have taken shelter in an area of land stretching across the provinces of Salahaddin, Diyala, Kirkuk, ... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time... and Nineveh where there is a security vacuum because it is disputed between Baghdad and Erbil. Kurdish and Iraqi security forces frequently cooperate and carry out joint operations against ISIS cells in the Kurdistan Region. Thousands of people have been detained across Iraq since 2014 for suspected links to krazed killer groups, including ISIS, and hundreds have been executed. At least 12 injured in knife attack at Hamburg train station: emergency services
2025-05-24 | ||||
[GEO.TV] A knife attack at the main station in the German city of Hamburg left at least 12 people injured with some of them in a life-threatening condition, local emergency services said. "According to initial information, a person injured several people with a knife at the main train station," Hamburg police said in a post on X. "The suspect was apprehended by the responding forces." A front man for the Hamburg fire department told AFP that 12 people had been injured in the attack. Among them were "six people with life-threatening injuries", the front man said. Some of the victims were being treated in trains, according to the German daily Bild. Germany has been rocked by a series of On Sunday, four people were maimed in a stabbing at a bar in the city of Bielefeld. The investigation into the attack had been handed over to federal prosecutors after the suspect in the attack told the coppers who arrested him that he had murderous Moslem beliefs.
Some of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries in the stabbing, which took place in the middle of the city’s evening rush hour, emergency services said. The suspect, a 39-year-old German woman,
Officers "approached her, and the woman allowed herself to be arrested without resistance," Florian Abbenseth told journalists in comments carried by public broadcaster ARD. "We have no evidence so far that the woman may had a political motive," Abbenseth said. "Rather, we have information based on which we now want to investigate whether she may have been experiencing a psychological emergency." The suspect was thought to have "acted alone," Hamburg police said in a post on X. Four of them had suffered life-threatening injuries, the front man said, revising down an initial figure. A previous statement by the fire department said six people were in a life-threatening condition. Among the 17 victims were six severely injured people and seven people with light injuries, the front man for the fire department said. The attack was reported by German media to have taken place just after 6:00 p.m. local time on one of the platforms in front of a standing train. The suspect was thought to have turned "against passengers" at the station, a spokeswoman for the Hanover federal police directorate, which also covers Hamburg, told AFP.
Update 2100 — Four are in critical condition A clearer picture of today’s mass stabbing in Germany is developing, with Die Welt reporting the number of known injured has risen to four in critical condition. A further six are seriously injured and seven more suffering light wounds. 17 in all were injured. The attack is the second mass stabbing in Germany in a matter of days. As previously reported, a stabbing in the early hours of Sunday morning in Bielefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia, allegedly by a Syrian migrant was days later classified as a possible terror attack after Islamist literature was found on the attacker and at his home. As well as using a knife, the man is alleged to have wielded a spear and a bottle of petrol.
The bar where the attack took place said in a social media post that one of those “critically injured” men had been a member of the public who had bravely fought the knifeman to end the attack. They said: “Had it not been for him, things would probably have been even worse”. Now the investigation into that attack has been taken over by the Federal Prosecutor on suspicion of a religious terrorism motive. Per a report by Germany’s Die Welt, they believe they have found evidence for Islamism, that the suspect had an interest in the Islamic State, and had been in contact with a known Islamist fundamentalist. It is stated the attack, which took place at a bar in the city, saw football fans attacked by a man wielding a knife and a home made spear, being a knife tied to a pole. A group of patrons fought back, causing the suspect to flee. As previously reported, the man dropped a bag containing “multiple knives, a liquid that smelled of gasoline, and personal documents indicating Syrian nationality”. Zeit states a spokesman for the Federal Prosecutor, which has specialist counter-terror investigators and takes suspected terror cases over from local non-specialised prosecutors, who said the mass stabbing is being treated as an attack on Germany’s liberal democratic order and that at the time of the suspect’s arrest “a document was found on him that suggests the crime may have been religiously motivated.” Further, images concerning Hezbollah and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) are said to have been found at the suspect’s apartment. Suspect Mhemed entered Europe through the territory of Turkey and was granted temporary refugee status by the German Migration Office in 2023. Earlier reports that he had no police record have been superseded, Focus reports, noting he had previously been investigated for “politically motivated crime” . He was arrested on Monday after leading police on a 100 mile chase through Germany, taking several trains and other public transport from Bielefeld to Essen and to other towns beyond, finally being found in an apartment of a relative in Heiligenhaus. Over 100 Militants Killed in Somalia Since Start of Trump’s Second Term, Says White House
2025-05-22 | |
[Garowe] At least 100 terrorists, both leaning to the al-Shabaab ... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord... and ISIS, have been killed in Somalia since President Donald Trump ...The Hero of Butler, Pennsylvania... assumed his second term early this year, the White House said, with the number expected to increase in the coming months.. On Monday, at least 10 hard boyz were killed in Cal-Miskaad mountains in Puntland ...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion... , with the White House posting a video of the battlegrounds within the mountains, which have been a base of the ISIS Death Eaters, but whose influence is declining. "We haven’t forgotten the threat posed by Jihadis. 10 more were permanently removed from the battlefield in Somalia yesterday," the White House said. "That brings the total to over 100 bloodthirsty Death Eaters killed since President Trump was sworn in." The US Africa Command has increased its tempo in Somalia, with the ... KABOOM!... s targeting strategic locations, destroying the Death Eaters' military installations and other assets dangerous for peace and stability in the region. In February, President Donald Trump announced airstrikes in Cal-Miskaad, where a senior commander of the ISIS hard boyz was killed. Since then, Puntland forces and US Africa Command have made progress, liberating several areas in the process. Trump said the hit, less than two weeks into his term, had targeted a senior IS attack planner and other hard boyz in Somalia's semi-autonomous region of Puntland and had "destroyed the caves they live in, and killed many Death Eaters without, in any way, harming civilians". He boasted that he had succeeded where former US President Joe The Big GuyBiden ![]() This Is A Man That Does Not Seem Demented... had failed."Biden and his cronies wouldn't act quickly enough to get the job done. I did!" The president maintained that "We will find you and we will kill you". But airstrikes are different from troops on the ground, and Trump did not stop aerial bombardments in his first term. He increased them to nearly 400. The initial number of service members was 600 before it was reduced during Trump's first administration.
The statement did not specify whether the militants targeted in the latest strike were affiliated with the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab group or the Islamic State in Somalia (ISS), both of which have been the focus of an intensified US military campaign in the country. However, local reports suggested the operation may have taken place near the town of Adan Yabaal in the Middle Shabelle region, a known al-Shabaab stronghold.

(ISIS) attacks targeting military checkpoints in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor and Hasakah provinces. The SDF also warned of an uptick in holy warrior activity aimed at destabilizing the region. "Our forces thwarted two separate ISIS attacks targeting our military checkpoints in the eastern Deir ez-Zor and Hasakah countrysides," the SDF said in a statement. Regarding the incident in Hasakah, the SDF reported that the attack occurred when one of their fighters stopped a "suspicious civilian vehicle" at a checkpoint. The vehicle was found to be carrying weapons and ammunition. Shortly afterward, two ISIS bully boyz on a cycle of violence launched an attack on the checkpoint. The SDF repelled the attack, which resulted in material damage but no casualties. In the Deir ez-Zor countryside, an SDF patrol came under fire from an "ISIS cell" while conducting a routine security operation. "Our forces responded effectively to the attack," the SDF stated, adding that "the losses inflicted on the Lions of Islam remain unknown." The SDF reported only minor material damage and confirmed that there were no casualties among their ranks. The SDF has been warning for months about a resurgence in ISIS activity targeting both their forces and civilians, particularly in oil-rich areas like Deir ez-Zor, which remains partially under their control. |

Puntland Launches Major Offensive Against ISIS in Cal-Miskaad Mountains |

Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion... regional forces have launched a major military operation targeting ISIS turbans hiding in the rugged Cal-Miskaad mountain range in northeastern Somalia, officials said on Tuesday. The offensive, described as intense and ongoing, aims to dislodge the group from strategic positions it has used for years as a base of operations. Security sources report that Puntland forces have already regained control of several key areas previously held by the bad boys. Among those killed in the recent fighting is Ahmed Muse Said, a senior ISIS figure responsible for coordinating the arrival of imported muscle into Somalia, according to local officials. "The operation is still underway and is focused on eliminating ISIS presence in the remote mountainous areas where they continue to hide," said Abdifatah Abdinuur, Minister of State at the Puntland Presidency. "We are making significant progress and will not stop until they are fully defeated." Puntland has been engaged in a sustained campaign against ISIS elements operating in the region, particularly in Bari province. While the group remains significantly smaller than al-Shabaab ![]() , it has continued to pose a threat through ambushes and assassinations. The Puntland Defense Forces have steadily advanced in recent days, pushing ISIS fighters further into retreat. Officials say the group has lost several of its key hideouts and is on the defensive. The offensive marks the latest phase in Puntland’s broader security effort to ensure stability in the region and dismantle holy warrior networks. Fresh details emerge about ISIS militant killed in Puntland [Garowe] Ahmed Muse Said, the ISIS militants coordinator killed in Cal-Miskaad mountains, Tuesday, was a well-connected individual who was also well-travelled across the world, thus his links with several foreign fighters in Puntland state. When Operation Lightning started late last year, Puntland forces, along with foreign military teams, established that most of the fighters are 'imported' from foreign countries, with their passports recovered in various caves which have been seized. And multiple sources revealed that Said, who was killed last week, frequently travelled abroad - to Ethiopia, Oman and the UAE. The three countries have close ties with Puntland, with the United Arab Emirates providing aerial surveillance throughout the campaign against ISIS. Brigadier General Ahmed Abdullahi Sheikh, the commander of Operation Lightning, termed him a 'high-value individual (HVI)' while confirming his identity. He was one of the most sought-after terrorists. "This operation underscores the unwavering commitment to combating terrorism and ensuring regional security. The successful elimination of this key figure represents a substantial blow to Daesh's operational capabilities and its ability to conduct destabilising activities," General Sheikh said. "We commend the exceptional professionalism, dedication, and precision demonstrated by all personnel involved in the critical mission. Their efforts are a testament to the resolve in the face of terrorist threats," he added. He said no further details of the time, date, or specific aspects of the operation will be disclosed at this time. The connection with foreign countries, specifically, could worry Puntland, which closely works with Somalia’s international partners. Officials are keen to unearth his links to the UAE, Oman and Ethiopia, which could aid in the fight against ISIS militants. In southern regions, the federal government of Somalia, which has not come out clearly to support Puntland’s stance against ISIS, is tackling Al-Shabaab militants. |

Over 600 IDPs return to Shingal from Duhok: Migration ministry |

[Rudaw] More than 600 displaced people on Sunday returned to the Yazidi heartland of Shingal (Sinjar) from Duhok province, Iraq’s migration ministry said, as officials anticipate a rise in returns once schools go on break. "The 126 families of 617 people returned to Shingal district from Duhok province," the spokesperson for the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displacement Ali Jahangir told Rudaw on Sunday. According to the migration ministry, returning Yazidi families will be provided with four million dinars (around $3,000) in financial assistance, along with some essential household appliances including a refrigerator, stove, and television. Though more than ten years have passed since ISIS launched its attack on Shingal, much of the Yazidi community remains displaced. Their return has been hindered by a combination of security concerns, political disputes, and infrastructure and reconstruction challenges. The presence of various gangs has also created an unstable environment, further deterring many Yazidis from returning. |
