“This right is recognized by international conventions and norms, and it cannot be abandoned until our national rights are restored, first and foremost the right to establish a fully sovereign, independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital,” the movement said in an official statement.
The corresponding statement was made after a number of media outlets, citing US Presidential Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, reported that Hamas was ready to lay down its arms.
On July 31, the Palestinian movement announced its readiness to resume ceasefire talks with Israel as soon as the humanitarian crisis and famine in the Gaza Strip are ended. Hamas stressed that continuing negotiations in conditions of famine looks pointless and useless.
A day earlier, on July 30, 17 states, including members of the Arab League (including Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan), as well as the European Union, expressed support for a document that calls on Hamas to relinquish power in the Gaza Strip.
The statement, agreed upon at the UN conference to resume the two-state solution for Israel and Palestine, calls for an end to Hamas rule in Gaza and the transfer of weapons to the Palestinian Authority, which governs the West Bank.
