| #4 Russia has been clever though, sending men in their 40's, 50's and 60's to the front. They are not as effective as younger men, but that doesn't matter much given the way Russians fight. It also reduces the demographic damage, which is especially important in a country with a birth rate of 1.4 children per women. |

| #3 I seem to recall that the honours are about even in real number, whatever they are. Whether it’s a quarter million dead for each side or half a million or 90,000, it’s still an awful lot of Slavs not around to have babies. |
