#5  This is the Democratic Party primary — the regular election will be in November. Apparently there was something like 35% turnout, concentrated on the left end of the Democratic spectrum, so they were able to put their guy on the ballot while the moderate, centrist Dems ignored the election and got on with their lives.

Taking primaries for granted is dangerous.

Many of the actually productive people have left, so the current populations are increasinyl on the dole, illegal or low-end service industry workers. Any candidate that offers bread and circuses usually wins. The unrest starts when the last of other people's money runs out, and the basic services become overwhelmed and incompetent. In the case of NYC, that won't take long...leading indicator will be massive retirement wave by NYPD and NYFD rank and file this summer!
