Man held for blasphemy |
2008-07-27 |
Munawar Baba, son of Rehmat Ali, is the resident of Ittehad Town and is a faith healer by profession. He was arrested by the police when scores of residents of the area were trying to kill him for what they described as blasphemous acts. The crowd was angry beyond reason and was bent on killing him. They had already beaten him very badly when the police arrived on the scene after receiving information from civilians. The mob was not willing to hand him over to the police and in the struggle to rescue Baba, some policemen also sustained injuries. The crowd chanted slogans against Baba's blasphemy and when the police hauled him away to the police station, scores of people followed and demanded that the police hand him over to them. However, with the help of respected persons of the area, the police managed to disperse the crowd and registered FIR No. 395-B on behalf of the government. It is pertinent to mention here that a Hindu man, who used to work at a local factory in Korangi, was killed by his colleagues for allegedly blasphemous statements, a fact which was disputed by human rights groups. |

#1 What I find really scary here is that it really doesn't take much to work up a crowd into a murderous frenzy. Just a rumor that blasphemy or desecration of a Koran happened half way around the world is enough to start a riot. Me: "I heard that my friend's neighbor's uncle's brother-in-law's cousin in the next district said that he might have heard that Fred said Muhammed was a poopy-head." Mob: "Stone him!!!" |
