Wanted: A Few Good Taliban Recruits |
2006-02-15 |
![]() The VCD, titled "Lions of Islam"—a copy of which was obtained by NEWSWEEK—is thoroughly professional. Shots of silhouetted guerrillas armed with AK-47s and RPG launchers are accompanied by songs in Pashto. Groups of masked fighters in Afghan Army camouflage are shown taking target practice, firing mortars and antiaircraft missiles. Getting the VCDs to their intended audience will be difficult for the Taliban. Because they lack access to industrial VCD manufacturers, supporters currently have to reproduce the VCDs by copying them one by one in small Pakistani video stores. They then have to be smuggled back inside Afghanistan—often inside the jackets of popular Bollywood movies—where, according to one Quetta shop owner who peddles the VCDs, they are sold clandestinely, "just like pornography." —Sami Yousafzai and Ron Moreau |

#7 Wait a second! I thought watching TV is forbidden. How do they expect their prospective recruits to view the VCD? |

#5 Digitally alter the images to introduce elements offensive to Moselms generally, or to specific ethnic groups. Introduce porn, or replace the original sound by porn sounds (gay of course) in scenees depicting the heroic Mudjahidin or when Mullah Omar meets bin Laden. |

#4 Just think of the fun the psyops guys can have with this! Viruses and rootkit thingies are just the beginning . . . * Digitally alter the images to introduce elements offensive to Moselms generally, or to specific ethnic groups. * Insert false flag information. "Call the 800 number on your screen to join the Taliban today. Join today and you also get a free Garden Weasel(tm). Operators are standing by." |

#3 That sort of thing would make the psyops guys clap their hands with glee. I betcha they crank out at least a dozen version on VHS and especially DVD. You know you can play DVDs on your computer? Rootkit? What's that? |

#2 Because they lack access to industrial VCD manufacturers I call bullshit. How do you think NewsWeak got a copy? |

#1 Shots of silhouetted guerrillas armed with AK-47s and RPG launchers are accompanied by songs in Pashto. But I thought the Taliban had outlawed music? They then have to be smuggled back inside Afghanistan—often inside the jackets of popular Bollywood movies— "No 'wet sari' scenes, just a bunch of masked guys with RPGs doing sublimated homoerotic S&M-kinda stuff. Whatta gyp! I want my money back!" |
