Germany revokes refugee status from more Syrians in 2026

[North Press] Germany revokes protected status from a growing number of Syrians, with nearly a quarter of cases reviewed in the first half of 2026 resulting in the loss of protection, the German news agency DPA on Sunday reported.

Data from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) showed that 23.2 percent of 8,320 reviews involving Syrian nationals between January and June ended with the withdrawal or revocation of protected status.

Most of the decisions involved the removal of refugee status or subsidiary protection.

The rate was significantly higher than in previous years. In 2025, 3.7 percent of Syrian nationals reviewed lost their protected status, compared with 3.1 percent in 2024.

German authorities can revoke protection when the conditions that originally justified it no longer apply, including when circumstances in a refugee’s country of origin undergo a fundamental change.
