Once again, we ask for your help in keeping Rantburg.com alive
At the moment the servers are running as well as can be.

The backup server, which also houses the Officer's Club,
…the chat room for anyone who just wants to chat, not only uniformed officers (whatever that would mean in this context)…
continues to preserve the database on the regular.

Some matters which affect server security are coming in the future, matters which will/could affect server security.

For example, Google creating a chip which uses qubits (0s and higher) instead of bits (0s and 1s). The quantum computer Google has built claims to be able to solve complex computation equations faster by several orders of magnitude than the most advanced computers now extant. This could potentially affect critical matters such as financial and medical data.

Us? Not so much because all of our data is open anyway. We just want to preserve its integrity. We can do that by implementing a more robust security architecture.

As I understand it, Apache web server does have additional ciphers, which are much more complex than the ones the Apache web server now uses. FreeBSD can access/use those ciphers, but the web server must be set up to recognize the use of the more advanced ciphers. FreeBSD does have ciphers embedded in its security architecture now, just not the more advanced ones.

At the moment, I am continuing to keep the web server from being overwhelmed by external threats; I will in time implement the new security there before on the main server.

  • At the Officers Club (be advised the officers club goes down six times every 24 hours to update the backup server. The times are at 01:15, 05:15, 09:15, 13:15, 17:15, 23:15 The web server goes back live at :45 minutes after each of those times. The remainder of the times the server is live an can be accessed.

SITE SEARCH
I have disabled the site search function which appears on the front page, If you try yo use it it will simply not work. I inserted an simple exit() command before the page is even loaded. This change was implemented to prevent web crawlers and others from overloading the database and web server with spurious searches.
