US unloads military might on Iran after Tehran closes Strait of Hormuz: ‘Now they pay’

[NY Post] The US unleashed its military might on Iran after the regime attacked a commercial vessel and declared the Strait of Hormuz closed Saturday.
"Iran made a poor choice. Now they pay," Secretary of War Pete Hegseth posted on X.
A civilian crew member from the ship is now missing and the vessel suffered significant engine room damage in the strikes, CENTCOM added.
The agency vowed that Tehran would pay a "heavy cost" and said that the retaliation, which began at 7:15 Eastern Time, was being carried out under the direction of the commander in chief, President Trump.
"Iran was provided yet another opportunity to demonstrate adherence to the Memorandum of Understanding after being held accountable for earlier attacks on commercial vessels but has again failed," CENTCOM said in a statement on X.
Explosions were heard in the southern Iranian cities of Bushehr and Asaluyeh early Sunday local time, Iranian state-run media reported.
Several Iranian military installations were targeted in the strikes, including ground-to-air missile launchers, drone and missile storage facilities and launch sites, and surveillance radars, a US official told Axios’ Barak Ravid.

The Revolutionary Guards say they have destroyed a command and control center and drone hangars at a base in US ally Jordan, after the US struck Iran in response to Tehran earlier targeting a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, declaring the waterway shut and threatening to target “additional enemy bases in the region” if it faced more attacks.
Meanwhile, authorities in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Qatar signal they are under attack as well.
Abu Dhabi’s defense ministry says its air defenses are engaging with missiles and drones coming from Iran.
Manama’s interior ministry says sirens have sounded in Bahrain.
And booms are heard in Doha as Qatar’s government sends a security alert to mobile phones, according to a witness.
Interceptions are seen in the sky above Qatar, a key mediator between Washington and Tehran, as residents receive messages on their phones urging them to “remain in their homes and safe places.”
Doha subsequently says its armed forces intercepted a missile attack.
Crew abandons ship US says was struck by Iran in Hormuz, maritime agency says
The crew of a ship damaged off the coast of Oman has abandoned the vessel, British maritime agency UKMTO reports, an attack the United States has blamed on Iran.
“UKMTO has been informed by military authorities and the CSO of the vessel that the crew have abandoned the vessel and are currently embarked in a lifeboat,” it says of the incident that took place around 17 kilometers (10 miles) east of Oman.
Iran said earlier that it struck and stopped a ship in the Strait of Hormuz for ignoring repeated instructions to use an “approved” route.

Iranian media reports explosions being heard in several coastal areas along the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, including Bushehr, Asaluyeh and Chabahar.
Three blasts have reportedly been heard in Bandar Abbas and two in Sirik, with explosions also heard in Qeshm Island.
US military says it is striking Iran after IRGC ‘blatantly attacked’ a civilian ship in Hormuz
The US military is carrying out a new round of strikes on Iran, the third in recent days, in response to the Revolutionary Guards’ announcement that it has attacked a vessel there and closed the waterway until further notice, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announces.
CENTCOM tweets that the strikes come after Iran “blatantly attacked M/V GFS Galaxy, a Cyprus-flagged container ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz.”
“A civilian crew member is missing and the vessel is unable to continue the journey due to an onboard fire and significant engineroom damage,” it adds.
“Iran was provided yet another opportunity to demonstrate adherence to the Memorandum of Understanding after being held accountable for earlier attacks on commercial vessels but has again failed. In response, the United States is imposing a heavy cost by continuing to degrade Iran’s ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial ships freely transiting the strait.”
The strikes “are being carried out at the direction of the Commander in Chief,” it says, meaning US President Donald Trump.
The strikes are on targets near the Strait of Hormuz, the Axios news site reports, citing an unnamed US official.
The US has launched retaliatory strikes against Iran after it fired a missile at a cargo ship attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz.
The Cyprus–flagged container ship sustained heavy damage after it was targeted on Saturday, US Central Command said on X.
As the US retaliated, at least five Middle Eastern countries sounded alarms, with Iran taking responsibility for strikes in Bahrain, Jordan and Kuwait and Qatar announcing it had intercepted a missile attack.
The vessel, which American authorities named as the M/V GFS Galaxy, was attempting to use an unauthorized route to cross the waterway, the IRGC claimed.
The US military's strikes on Saturday night, which began around 7.15pm Eastern time, marked the third round against Iran this week.
Some of the targets attacked by US forces included missile and drone sites, naval capabilities, ammunition storage facilities, communication networks and coastal surveillance locations, US Central Command said.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had met with his Omani counterpart on Saturday to discuss the strait given the recent tension.
Araghchi explained that the meeting in Muscat, Oman, was meant to discuss 'appropriate mechanisms for ensuring the safe passage of ships,' according to the Associated Press.
Omani and Iranian negotiators were set to continue talks 'at the technical and political levels,' Reuters reported, citing Oman's state news agency.
Explosions have been reported in southern Iran in the port cites of Bandar Abbas and Sirik, according to Iran's IRIB state broadcaster, as per Al Jazeera.
At least 12 explosions have reportedly been heard in different parts of the Bushehr province, which homes the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.
No casualties had been reported as of early Saturday night, according to Ehsan Jahanian, the province’s deputy governor for political, security and social affairs.
More than 10 explosions were heard in the port city of Jask, according to the outlet, citing the IRNA news agency.
Blasts have also been heard in Chabahar, Bandar-e Deyr and Asaluyeh, the outlet added. Other explosions have been reported near Konarak and Chabahar.
Iran claimed it had targeted US military facilities at Prince Hassan Air Base in Jordan with several missiles, according to Al Jazeera, citing the IRIB state broadcaster.
The IRGC claimed its aerospace forces had destroyed a command-and-control center at the base and hangars with MQ-9 drones.
The country's state broadcaster also claimed Iran had launched drone attacks on US military sites in Kuwait and Bahrain.
The IRGC claimed it used explosive drones to target a Patriot air defense system, an ammunition depot and a radar site belonging to the US military in Kuwait, as well as a communications system and radar site in Bahrain.
Bahrain's Ministry of Interior had activated air raid sirens and directed locals to head to the nearest safe place, it said on X.
The United Arab Emirates said its air defenses were 'engaging' with incoming missiles and drone attacks from Iran, according to Al Jazeera.
Qatar's Ministry of Defense said that a missile attack had been intercepted, though it did not give further details. The country's Ministry of Interior had urged everyone to remain inside their homes or in safe places.
The IRGC claimed it had targeted the airbase at Qatar’s Al Udeid with ballistic missiles, according to Al Jazeera.
U.S. Forces Finish Latest Round of Strikes Against Iran
TAMPA, Fla. — U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) completed a third round of strikes this week against Iran, July 11, holding Iranian forces accountable for attacking another commercial ship in the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. forces hit approximately 140 Iranian military targets with precision munitions launched by land- and sea-based fighter aircraft, drones, and naval vessels. Targets included Iranian missile and drone sites, naval capabilities, ammunition storage facilities, communication networks, and coastal surveillance locations.
During three nights of strikes this week, CENTCOM has struck more than 300 targets at the direction of the Commander in Chief to degrade Iran’s ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial vessels freely transiting the strait. Commercial vessel transits through the vital international maritime corridor continue.
Since early May, U.S. forces have helped facilitate the successful transit of more than 800 commercial vessels and 400 million barrels of crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz.
