[MSN] Supergirl box office collapse is now historically bad, and Gunn’s timing couldn’t be worse.

The verdict is in on Supergirl, and it’s ugly. After a soft opening, DC’s latest didn’t just fade in weekend two, it fell off a cliff, posting one of the worst second-weekend drops in superhero movie history.

First weekend was weak at about $37 M
Second weekend was awful at about $ 9.6 MWarner Bros is looking at a $100+ M loss.

Also sorts of inside baseball stuff at the link, but the bottom line is that with Larry Ellison buying the studio and the directors’ contracts due for renewal, Mr. Gunn probably won’t be allowed to continue what was intended to be a ten-film series.

3 Yeah but they'll be showing it on the FX cable channel for years to come and it will eventually turn a profit. The bummer is that Hollywood doesn't make blockbusters anymore, just a bunch of recycled crap like Supergirl.

4 Odyssey is supposed to be that Summer Blockbuster.

We'll see; coming on the home stretch before release, I'm seeing elements of those advertising tricks usually done on movies with a waning interest leading up to the showing.

5 warner bro does get a piece of the subscription pie from the cable channels (about $2/month per subscription)

but the number of subscribers is decreasing and the piece of the pie is based on all warner movies the cable channel runs so the amount attributable to any one movie isn't very much
