Shadow AI: The Invisible Risk Growing Inside Your Organization

[LinkedIn] Somewhere in your organization, someone is pasting confidential data into a public AI chatbot to finish a task faster. Somewhere else, an AI agent with access to your systems takes action. It may approve a workflow or write to a database. No human is in the loop. Neither is hypothetical. Both are already happening inside most enterprises, usually without compliance or security teams knowing.
That is the collision worth discussing. Shadow AI and agentic AI are two different risks. Now they are converging into one governance problem. Regulators are no longer willing to wait.
Shadow AI is when employees use AI tools without approval or IT oversight. It is the AI-era version of Shadow IT. Unlike many tools, AI can store or reveal anything users enter. Agentic AI goes further. These AI systems don’t just answer questions; they take actions. They can write code, execute transactions, and modify records. They often use real credentials with minimal oversight.
