Previously the armed wing of the Polisario Front liberation movement in Morocco’s Western Sahara (a member of the Socialist International since 1973), they are now the army of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), recognized by the UN and over forty countries, but not Morocco. The most recent estimate I’m aware of puts them at 20,000-30,000 active troops, down from 100,000 at peak. Almost the entire population is Sunni Muslim.

The primary differences stem from political allegiance rather than theology, as Moroccan Islam emphasizes loyalty to King Mohammed VI as "Commander of the Faithful," while Sahrawi Muslims have historically been influenced by nomadic traditions and Saharan Sufi brotherhoods, separate from the Moroccan state structure.
