on Saturday executed two men convicted of membership in a banned opposition group and carrying out disruptive actions aimed at overthrowing the Islamic Theocratic Republic , the judiciary said.
The executions were the latest in a series targeting members of the banned People’s Mujahedin of Iran (MEK),
…in Farsi Mojahedin-e-Khalq, a red-green alliance all within themselves, they’re Revolutionary Marxist Islamists. After joining the Mullahs in revolting against the Shah, they turned on the Mullahs in turn. Naturally the Mullahs came to resent them. For some reason America helped move their headquarters from Iraq to Albania in 2016, where they remain to this day, despite causing trouble in Iran from time to time… after four other convicted members of the group were executed earlier in the week.
They also come against the backdrop of Iran’s war with the United States and Israel, sparked by US-Israeli strikes on February 28 that killed the country’s supreme leader and have since triggered a wider regional conflict.
"Abolhassan Montazer and Vahid Baniamerian ... were hanged after trial and their sentences were upheld by the Supreme Court," the judiciary’s Mizan Online website said on Saturday.
The men were found guilty of attempting "rebellion through involvement in multiple terrorist acts," as well as membership in the MEK group and carrying out acts of sabotage aimed at overthrowing the Islamic Theocratic Republic .
It was not immediately clear when the men were arrested.
The MEK, which initially supported the 1979 Islamic revolution before falling out with the leadership in the 1980s, has since been in exile and is designated a terrorist organization by Tehran.
Iran is the world’s second most prolific executioner after China, according to rights groups.
Since the war began, it has executed multiple individuals, including on Thursday, when authorities executed a man convicted of acting on behalf of Israel and the United States during a wave of anti-government protests earlier this year.
On March 19, three others convicted of killing coppers during the protests were also executed.
Also in March, Iran executed Kouroush Keyvani, a dual Iranian-Swedish national, on charges of spying for Israel, drawing condemnation from Stockholm and the European Union

Iran executed two men convicted of attempting to storm a military facility and access an armory during January’s anti-government protests, the judiciary’s Mizan news outlet said on Sunday.
“Mohammad-Amin Biglari and Shahin Vahedparast… were hanged after the case was reviewed and the final verdict was confirmed by the Supreme Court,” Mizan said.
The two men were among a group of four in the same case who faced execution, according to rights group Amnesty International.
Iran’s Supreme Court upheld the sentences for the two defendants who were among “rioters who sought to commit mass murder” by trying to steal weapons and military equipment, the outlet added.
Sunday’s executions were the latest related to the protests, which broke out in Iran late December against the rising cost of living before becoming nationwide anti-government demonstrations that peaked on January 8 and 9.
Iranian authorities said the rallies began as peaceful demonstrations before turning into “foreign-instigated riots” involving killings and vandalism.
Tehran has said more than 3,000 people were killed during the unrest, including members of the security forces and bystanders, attributing the violence to “terrorist acts.”
The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), however, said it had recorded more than 7,000 deaths, the vast majority of them protesters, adding that the toll could be higher.
Iran has carried out multiple executions in recent days of people linked to the protests or opposition groups, including members of the banned People’s Mujahedin (MEK).
