Arctic Outbreaks this week will test power grids in East USA

[MSN-TheIndependent] Grid operators overseeing power in 28 states are on high alert to shore up fuel supplies and brace for a spike in power demand as the Northeast and Midwest face an Arctic freeze this holiday weekend.

The frigid outbreak, the first of several expected through early February, is forecast to bring temperatures 15F to 30F below normal, with repeated waves of Arctic air pushing deep into the central and eastern U.S.

Several States have forbidden new natural gas hook ups for new construction in the past few years. Thus the potential electric demand during very cold weather is more of a threat this year than it would have been a few years ago. Also, a lot of homes have resistance heating as an augment when the heat exchange isn't powerful enough to keep the inside temperature up. At least all the transmission lines seem to be capable but we'll see.

On Friday & returning Sunday, between I-20 Exit 113 to I-75 Exit 201.
We noticed lots of Southern Power company Trucks & Crews hauling reels of power line cable already pre-staged, along the way.

Note: This is a major Southeastern power line grid area, with feeds coming from Nuke Plants at Branch, GA. (Mid-GA), and Pt. Hatch / Pt. Vogtle further south in GA. These supply power to GA, Ala, and some to eastern Miss areas.
