At least eight killed in explosion at mosque in Syria
|
 [Rudaw] At least eight people were killed, and 18 were maimed on Friday after a kaboom struck a mosque in Syria’s Homs province, state media reported.
"Eight people were killed, and 18 were maimed as a result of the earth-shattering kaboom, in a preliminary toll," the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) cited Najeeb al-Naasan, emergency director at the Syrian health ministry, as saying.
The blast occurred at the Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque in the Wadi al-Dhahab neighborhood in southeastern Homs, according to SANA.
A security source told the outlet that initial investigations indicate the earth-shattering kaboom was caused by bombs planted inside the mosque. Internal Security units were deployed to the site and imposed a security cordon, while relevant authorities began investigating and collecting evidence.
No group has immediately grabbed credit, and authorities said investigations were ongoing.
The Syrian foreign ministry, in a statement, strongly condemned "the terrorist crime by a bombing that targeted one of the mosques in the city of Homs during Friday prayers," and extended condolences to the family of the victims.

In a statement on Telegram, the Saraya Ansar al-Sunna
…possibly an offshoot of Hayat Tahrir al Sham/Al Nusra… says its fighters “detonated a number of explosive devices” in the Imam Ali Bin Abi Talib Mosque, which is located in an Alawite area.
The group was formed after the ouster of ruler Bashar al-Assad, who is a member of the Alawite community. The militant group had claimed responsibility for a Damascus church bombing in June.
Quoting a health ministry official, SANA gave a preliminary toll of at least eight dead and 18 wounded.
Syria's interior ministry said in a statement that "a terrorist explosion" targeted the mosque "during Friday prayers".
Homs was the scene of heavy sectarian violence during Syria's civil war.
