Man accused of shooting two US National Guard troops in DC pleads not guilty

[israelTimes] A man accused of shooting two National Guard troops near the White House pleads not guilty to first-degree murder and assault charges.

Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national who was also shot, makes his initial court appearance by video from a hospital bed.

His attorney entered a not guilty plea on his behalf on the charges stemming from the November 26 shooting that killed Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and wounded Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe.

Rahmanullah Lakanwal has denied charges of shooting two National Guard members near the White House, appearing in court from his hospital bed.

Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the Afghan asylum seeker accused of shooting two U.S. National Guard members near the White House, has pleaded not guilty during his first court appearance on Tuesday, December 2.

The virtual hearing was held via video link, with Lakanwal appearing from a hospital bed where he is being treated for injuries sustained during the confrontation with security forces. Speaking through an interpreter, he told the judge he was in severe pain and struggling to keep his eyes open.

A court-appointed attorney formally entered the not-guilty plea on his behalf. Prosecutors stated that Lakanwal faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, and possession of an illegal firearm.

Judge Renée Raymond of the Washington Superior Court ordered that he remain in custody without bail, calling the case against him “very strong.”

1 Am I the only one thinking that the prison needs to keep him away from the other prisoners and keep him on suicide watch if they want him to make it to trial?
