Among the unresolved cases is Paul Edwin Overby Jr., an American writer who disappeared in May 2014 while travelling toward Pakistain’s Wazoo region. He was last seen in Khost, Afghanistan, conducting research for a new book. Officials now fear he may have died in captivity.
Sources quoted by CNN said the Taliban did not receive any direct concessions for Amiri’s release, raising cautious optimism that further detainees could be freed without formal exchanges.
Families of those still missing expressed both relief and frustration. Ahmad Shah Habibi, whose brother Mahmoud Shah has been held since August 2022, said they were pleased to hear of Amiri’s release but remain desperate for news of their loved one.
"My brother is also an American, yet he has had no contact with his wife since his detention," Habibi said, highlighting the emotional strain faced by families.

Over the past several years, the Taliban have released five US citizens, but others remain unaccounted for. The US Secretary of State stressed that President Trump remains personally committed to bringing every American home.
Analysts note that detainee issues continue to complicate US-Taliban relations, which remain a mix of limited cooperation and deep mistrust. Resolving these cases, they argue, could shape the future of Washington’s engagement with Kabul.
Earlier this month, President Trump signed an executive order empowering the State Department to blacklist countries involved in the wrongful detention of American citizens. The order also authorises heavy penalties on governments engaged in such practices.
While the exact number of Americans currently detained in Afghanistan remains unclear, officials acknowledged that several individuals are still unaccounted for. Among them is Afghan-American Mahmoud Shah Habibi, whom US authorities believe was detained in 2022, though Afghan authorities deny holding him.
US envoy for hostage affairs Adam Boehler travelled to Kabul on Sunday in an unannounced visit. Local officials confirmed the release of Amiri and said the issue of other detainees remains under discussion. Boehler has previously travelled to Kabul twice for similar negotiations.
The release has been seen as a diplomatic breakthrough but also a reminder of ongoing challenges in securing the freedom of Americans detained abroad. Analysts say Washington will continue to pursue a mix of pressure and dialogue to ensure further progress.
