Sudan to send police to Red Sea State amid deadly tribal clashes

[Al Ahram] The Sudanese government on Wednesday announced its decision to send police forces to the Red Sea State in eastern Sudan which is witnessing tribal festivities, Sudan's council of ministers said.

"Sudan's Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok on Wednesday issued instructions to enhance the security presence by sending central reserve forces to the Red Sea State with the stress on the decision by the local authorities to impose full curfew in the state's capital city of Port Sudan," said the council in a statement.

Hamdok urged all social and civil components in eastern Sudan to abide by peacefulness and avoid escalation, according to the statement.

Since Sunday, Port Sudan has been witnessing armed festivities between members of Bani Amer and al-Nuba tribes, which reportedly left at least 25 people dead, according to unofficial statistics.
