1 What I want to know is whether or not Fauci sent money to the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute.

**No.** There is no evidence that Anthony Fauci sent money to the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute.

After a 28-year-old lab worker at the institute died on October 2, 2026, from suspected pneumonic plague, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and entrepreneur Blake Scholl suggested Fauci funded the lab. Mediaite explicitly characterized Lee's claim as **baseless**.

What *has* been documented is a different funding path: roughly **$800,000** in federal grants under HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s NIH went to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for research conducted with Russia's state-run Institute of Cytology and Genetics (ICG) in Novosibirsk. The ICG has separately collaborated on plague research with the Irkutsk institute — but no direct payment from the US government (Fauci's or otherwise) to the Irkutsk lab itself has been identified.
