1 The lesson was don't try nation building till you literally made the rubble bounce as in Germany and Japan.

2 I think you have to speak to the audience you have. Nation building was an appropriate choice in 1945, then again we were dealing with civilized peoples.

When confronted with savages it's more suitable to lay waste to anything and everything you can destroy. Then leave; you made us angry if we have to come back to this un-flushed toilet there won't be any of you left to regret it.

3 There was no reason to stay in Afghanistan after it became clear that bin Laden had escaped to Pakistan. Of course, that also made it clear that we should have laid waste to Pakistan.
