[Regnum] In the indigenous village of Las Tacitas in the Mexican state of Chiapas, local residents accused their neighbors of witchcraft and burned them alive. Need To Know reported this on October 1.
According to the source, the victims belonged to the Tzeltal Maya community. Villagers dragged a 50-year-old man and his girlfriend from their home and brought them to the community hall, where they beat them for several hours. They were then doused with fuel and set on fire. Their remains were found covered by the road.
According to preliminary information, the man was a healer, and accusations of witchcraft arose after people who sought his help fell ill. Another theory suggests the death of a community official was the trigger.
Horacio Culebro Borrayas, President of the Chiapas State Human Rights Commission, emphasized that no rumors or beliefs justify torture or the loss of life. The state attorney general's office has opened an investigation into the tragedy.
