1 The CDU with its Bavarian ally CSU had been Germany's big tent center right party since the end of WW2. The notion that the CDU would fail to be represented in a state parliament would have been deemed absurd even a year ago.

The likely result of this election will be a coalition of social democrats, communists and greens. This is also true for Berlin, where elections were held on the same day.
