4 Typically when these pro-UKR articles come out, they are for domestic ukr and global woke consumption b/c usually within six months to a year, the city falls.

Usually when these articles are released, Russians have patrols and force projection into said areas. I have yet to read an article where the city does not eventually fall.

Kupiansk is now on my radar. Quick google, city was under russian control until recently, until this spring.

I may have solved the riddle. Azov Battalion is deployed in Kupiansk. That's may be the reason for the glowing article. Domestic consumption, as I was saying.

6 Initial Occupation (2022): Russian forces first captured the city on February 27, 2022, after its then-mayor surrendered. It remained under Russian occupation until it was liberated by Ukrainian forces during their Kharkiv counteroffensive on September 10, 2022.

Recent Clashes (2025–2026): Russian forces launched renewed offensives to retake the city. While Russian officials repeatedly claimed they had fully seized or "liberated" the city in late 2025, these claims were routinely refuted by Ukrainian military officials and open-source intelligence. Ukrainian defenders continued conducting clearance operations to expel isolated groups that had managed to infiltrate certain districts.

7 before the Russian invasion, Kupiansk was a pretty nice place w about 25k pop

now a mostly burnt out waste with perhaps 500 people hiding in the wreckage
