1 There has been a remarkable amount of investigation over the last few years into what actually killed Hood. Two in particular - Oceanliner Designs and Drachinfel, both on YT - have done amazing videos on the subject.

The consensus seems to be that it was literally a thousand to one shot - Hood was turning to port just tightly enough that her armor belt on the starboard side rolled upwards, and the shell struck just BELOW the belt and penetrated the unarmored hull.

A heartbeat in either direction, and it would never have happened.

3 #1 - I think the shot-through-the-deck theory is based on the experience of the Brit battlecruisers at Jutland as opposed to any observation or physical evidence.
