Berkeley has been this way for 60+ years. It lost sight of its original intentions, probably due to California's decision in the early 50's to make each state campus 'semi-autonomous' and not under the general control of the state system.

Founded in 1868 as a 'public agricultural, mining, and mechanical arts college'. Their initial goal was that the "University shall have for its design, to provide instruction and thorough and complete education in all departments of science, literature and art, industrial and professional pursuits, and general education, and also special courses of instruction in preparation for the professions."

Of course now, political agitation is considered a 'profession' that generally will make more money than those lowly nuclear or aerospace science or engineering grads.

4 #1 Was that way in 1968 when I blundered into Berkley. "Peoples' Park" was the big thing; only the University Admin was the "bad guy" instead of a co-conspirator.

8 Besoeker has a gift for finding the most wonderfully appropriate images, Unoluper Creng1217 — I have no idea how he does it. I just use the Rantburg image collection that Fred accumulated over the years.
