4 As a Midshipman, I spent 6 weeks on the USS Saratoga in the Med. Underway, I think I remember the At Sea Fire Party being called away at least once a day. I could be wrong. It was 1987.

Fires happen much less often on destroyers, but they do happen occasionally. There are fewer people on a destroyer and less equipment.

Many of the smaller electrical fires used to be termed something like “warming insulation” to circumvent the requirement to send out a notification to the chain of command up to Sec Nav. My guess is that the fire was significant enough to make some piece of equipment inoperable or degraded. That would have mandated notifications. The releasing of the info to the press could have had a number of sources, both legitimate or illicit.
