Here's what happened:

A bright bold Brit engineer had an educated guess that there might be oil undiscovered in western Iran.

In 1901, the govt of Iran signed an unambiguous contract with that bright bold Brit engineer for ~60 years --> IFF oil could indeed be discovered, then they'd split the revenue for decades going forward.

Several years later, oil was discovered.

Several years after that, the Iranian govt. insisted on larger share of revenue. Contract was renewed and extended for more decades.

In 1953 Mosadegh became prime minister and simply took over the whole operation. Stole it. Ignored the contract in order to keep all revenue.

That's what happened.

It would be like the state of Washington taking possession of, say, AMAZON INC. because it felt like it.
