5 By the 15th century, the descendants of the first settlers had died out (there are several theories—from epidemics or imported plague, from the deteriorating climate during the Little Ice Age, or from conflicts with the Inuit)

The first Viking settlers in Greenland were farmers and herders. That worked until the Little Ice Age and then it didn't. The Inuit, hunters and fishermen, were better adapted to the icy conditions. Maybe with a little global warming Greenland could be the breakbasket of the North again.

7 After Denmark joined NATO in 1949, the old Kaufmann Agreement was replaced by a new treaty of April 27, 1951. It reaffirmed Danish sovereignty over Greenland but made the island a NATO joint defense area, allowing American troops to be based there.

So, if we can legally have a military presence on the island, I don't see the problem. Does the treaty specify how large that military presence can be? Somehow, I kinda doubt it.

I think the walrus would have been seen as a source of food by the Inuit which could well have exacerbated tensions between the Vikings and the Inuit and hastened even more the Viking departure.

9 Abu, read a bit about the Vikings - if Inuit gave them any trouble, there would be no Inuit. (It's just that Europe got access to elephant ivory).

10 I have read some about the Vikings and, from what I read, they were over-extended in the New World and the Inuit did not fear them like the French did. There are indications that the Vikings made it all the way to Canada and New England. They were very fierce, tough and adventurous but they were stretched too thin to compete with the Native Americans.
