1 Like the split of the old Roman Empire into East and West. The west fell to the Gothic invasions. The East would linger for several hundred years longer. Our ancestors will probably look back upon our efforts in the 20th century to save old Europe as many historians looks at Justinian's exhaustion of the East trying to recover the old Western Empire.

Some Europeans seem to have formed the idea that one can have "soft power" independent of military power. Strongly worded letters and economic sanctions have their utility, but dropping a JDAM on the bad guy's head really gets the point across.
