3 ^#2: Seeking, Israel has in the past with the IAI Kfir and the IAI Lavi. The basic problem is that maintaining an aerospace industry without significant foreign customers is simply too expensive with all of Israel's other military needs. Israel has done well, very well in the after market modification business as the article attests.

4 The US Air Force wanted an air-superiority fighter. The Israelis needed a long-range strike fighter. Two different creatures with different roles and requirements.

The bean counters love one-size-fits-all, but in the real world, purpose-built solutions win. It all depends on what kind of war you plan on fighting.
