2 This isn’t rocket science.

While all bedding is being washed in very hot water and the pillows are enjoying 20-30 minutes in a hot dryer, thoroughly vacuum mattress, box spring, bed frame, baseboards and floor, then use a powder duster to spread diatomaceous earth along mattress seams and in all crannies of bed frame and baseboards. Before making the bed, pull the bed frame six inches away from the wall, encase mattress and box spring in bedbug-proof mattress covers, and set the bed’s legs in bedbug interceptors (if the floor is carpeted, a piece of 1”x4” under the interceptors will keep the inexpensive plastic from cracking under the pressure, and I dusted the carpet with diatomaceous earth as well).

Trailing daughter #1 and final daughter fled home from a trip once because the hotel had bedbugs, which had, unbeknown to them, crawled into their suitcases. We were all very upset, but the internet shared useful advice. I left the interceptors on all the bed legs in case the things should ever show up again — I got white ones so they could be easily seen — but it only happened once. Clever hoteliers routinely take precautions, because even the most exclusive clientele can pick up hitchhikers as they roam the world.
