1 Given we already have substantial reports of legal paper done with AI that cite non-existent precedents, why would anyone be surprised.

2 AI has helped me tremendously in finding the correct command line prompts for a IMHO poorly documented but powerful open source software package.

However the answers to my prompts were rarely correct themselves, but they showed me where I had made a mistake, making it easy to find the complete correct prompt.

That said using AI to generate big blobs of information whose correctness cannot immediately be verified (which is what software really is) is madness.

Having human specialists going through these blobs with a fine comb looking for errors that a human wouldn't normally make is more costly than having skilled humans write software from scratch.

AI is a yuge productivity boost in some areas (applied art, both textual and graphics) but absolute poison in others, especially software development.

4 In general AI can be safely tried and is potentially suitable for problems to which a proposed solution can be verified "quickly and easily" (NP-complete problems.)

In practice, however, any non-trivial piece of software is the polar opposite of being verifiable / validatable quickly and easily.
