[Regnum] A 2.74-carat natural gem-quality blue diamond was mined in Yakutia for the first time in Russia. This was reported bythe Alrosa company's press service on November 6.
The crystal was discovered in the Nakyn kimberlite field. It is a type IIb diamond, one of the rarest types of natural diamonds. The stone's blue color is due to boron, a component of its crystal lattice.
Another unique feature of the find is its exceptional clarity. The company noted that the diamond is completely free of internal inclusions, which, combined with its unusual coloring, makes it particularly valuable to jewelers.
Experts are currently completing the cutting of the stone, which has been underway for 2026, with 11 craftsmen. The finished diamond is scheduled to be unveiled at the end of November.
Blue diamonds are rarer in nature than pink ones and are considered among the most valuable gemstones. This discovery confirms the presence of boron-bearing type IIb diamonds in the Nakyn kimberlite field for the first time. This opens new possibilities for studying the conditions of their formation in the Earth's interior, the company concluded.
Diamonds of other unusual shades have been found in Yakutia before. In July, Alrosa unveiled a rare lavender-colored diamond weighing 2.03 carats and valued at approximately 125 million rubles. The heart-shaped stone was cut from a 350-million-year-old rough diamond mined the previous year. Its processing took over six months.
In May 2025, the largest gem-quality diamond in Russian history, weighing 468.3 carats, was mined in Yakutia. The amber-colored crystal was named "80 Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War."
