#7 What the Greeks are really afraid of, and this truce BS proves it, are Catholics and other stuges of the Vatican causing a ruckus. The Pope knows this and does nothing to prevent it. His Bishops preach hatred of the Orthodox and a blind devotion to the papacy and latin superiorty. I could go on and on but you folks know the story. But ever since the 72 olympics, when the catholics took the Greek fencing team hostage, there has been and continues to be a security problem in hosting the olympics.

#8 The US athletes will be booed unmercifully in Greece. Not that it has much to do with Bush or the WOT, because our athletes were booed pretty badly (even our women athletes) at the Sydney games in 2000 -- and the Clintons were prez at the time.

#9 ..Actually, this may not be so much a plea for World Peace(tm), but a desperate plea on the part of the Greek leadership to the gunnies - 'For Zeus' sake, don't f**k this up!!!' The Greeks are notoriously lax when it comes to the terrs, and they sure as heck aren't going to crack down on them and risk getting their own backsides chewed up.

#11 The reason this worked in Classical Greece is that all the states that sent contestants were co-religionists; if you broke the truce, not only the rest of Greeece but also the gods would be on your case. Unfortunately, not the case here and now... and I do mean unfortunately. I'd like to think such things were possible and we could get the world thru a fortnight without multiple stories about wormfood being generated thru modern chemistry and politics. But those days are gone if they ever existed outside romantic fiction.
