Among the criteria for selecting Ambassadors to India, one is probably their digestion. I think it was a Remmer or Roemer who was perpetually in the loo. I met Nancy Powell once at an event. She was rumored to be very particular about her diet.

As for work, they get no time for anything much from all the weddings and chief guest invites and ribbon cutting and bollywood hoopla. They come expecting a chaperoned princely supervision of US interests and are swept up in the ride of their lives, and before they know it it's over.

According to Mr. Wife, learnt the hard way in Egypt, the key is to completely avoid meat, sticking to bread and cooked vegetarian dishes, alcoholic beverages, factory-sealed water bottles one opens oneself, and fruits one peels ditto.

He enjoyed the food in India so much he brought me home a Madhur Jaffrey cookbook.
