Bangladesh Reactor Funding

**Russia** is the primary financier of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, providing **90% of the project's funding** through state-backed loans. The total estimated cost is **$12.65 billion**, with the loan amounting to approximately **$11.38 billion** to be repaid over **28 years** (including a 10-year grace period starting in 2027).

The remaining **10% of the funding** is provided by the **Government of Bangladesh**. The construction is carried out by **Rosatom's subsidiary, Atomstroyexport**, under an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract signed in 2015.

Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant
The plan to establish a nuclear power plant in the then East Pakistan was made in 1961.

The plan to construct a 200 MW power plant was completed in 1969 with the assistance of Belgium. However, in 1969-1971, the project was scrapped by the then Pakistan government.

From 1977–86, the French company MS Sofratom carried out a feasibility study and determined that the Rooppur project was viable.

In 2005, Bangladesh signed a nuclear cooperation agreement with China.[14] Two years later, in 2007, the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) put forth a proposal for the construction of two 500 MW nuclear reactors in Rooppur, aiming for completion by 2015.

On 15 January 2013, Bangladesh and Russia established an Intergovernmental Credit Agreement worth US$500 million to fund the preparatory phase activities of the power plant, and construction of the first phase of the project was also approved on 2 April of the same year.
