The Trump administration is in talks with Iran’s parliament speaker to try to end the war, according to a new report.

Mohammad ⁠Baqher Ghalibaf, who threatened mass retaliation against energy facilities across the Middle East in the face of President Trump’s ultimatum over the weekend, is the “top person” speaking with the US whom the president mentioned on Monday, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Ghalibaf is a hardliner. But, of course, pretty much everyone is in the Iranian regime, and so many of them have already been taken out. I'm guessing that one of the reasons Ghalibaf is talking now is that he doesn't want to join that list, and he sees they're running out of options. They have threats against the Strait and propaganda. But if Iran actually retaliated against the energy facilities across the Gulf States as Ghalibaf threatened, that would probably draw the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and others into joining militarily against them. The Gulf States are already thinking along those lines, and now believe Iran poses a grave threat to them.

Mr. Ghalibaf is not in our archives, so the President had to reach pretty far down in the ranks to find someone both alive and willing to talk…
