JI asks militants to shun terrorism |
2014-06-18 |
[DAWN] Being seen as an indirect support of Zarb-e-Azb military operation in North ![]() ... The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independentbranch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores... (JI) has called upon forces of Evil active in the tribal belt and elsewhere in the country to shun their terrorist activities and instead join the national mainstream. "I appeal to forces of Evil hailing from tribal areas and other parts of the country to give up the way of getting their demands met at gunpoint and instead use the people's force for joining the mainstream," JI emir Sirajul Haq said after a consultative meeting of the party on the army operation here on Monday. "It's also need of the hour that they (the bad boys) play their role in protecting lives instead of confronting the state," he emphasised. Syed Munawwar Hasan, former emir of the JI, became controversial after he declared forces of Evil being killed in festivities with security forces as deaders. Rejecting the use of force, violence and war both by the state and non-state actors as against wisdom and prudence, Mr Haq said that the Nawaz government should have taken the national leadership and parliament into confidence before going for such a big decision (of army operation). He called for keeping the talks option open despite the operation and seeking help and cooperation from tribal elders, who had been safeguarding interests of Pakistain since decades. He said military operations in tribal areas were going on since 2004, but the situation there was becoming more complicated with the passage of time. Recalling the unanimous mandate the politicianship of the country had given to the government in September last year for holding talks with bad boys, the JI leaders accused the government of not showing sincerity from the outset and that its stance had been like "one step forward and two steps back". |

Stop it, for God's sake -- Shumaila Raja |
2013-11-15 |
[Pak Daily Times] In the debate, 'Who is a shaheed (martyr) and who is not', we have gone too far, much to the amusement of our enemy. What the Jamaat-e-Islami ... (JI) Ameer said was unfortunate, and it really hurt the sentiments of people, the army and the polity. But most of all unfortunate is the JI's opting to stick to its Ameer's stance, probably to gain political mileage. The JI was not in the mainstream. The blurb only served to retrieve its 'lost glory'. This tiny issue has itself helped to distract the nation's attention from more pressing issues. The Pakistain intelligence agencies have issued reports indicating a rise in sectarian strife in Punjab during the month of Muharram. Two banned ...the word bannedseems to have a different meaning in Pakistain than it does in most other places. Or maybe it simply lacks any meaning at all... organizations will assail opponents during the last three days of Muharrum on the dates of 8th, 9th and 10th respectively. Terrorists will carry out targeted attacks on Shia gatherings, majaalis (commemorative gatherings) and mourning processions, as well as assassinating specific and prominent personalities in order to accomplish their ulterior motives. This news came amidst reports that the US Senate Intelligence Committee has quietly approved a plan to step up both public and internal government oversight of the use of armed drones to kill suspected gunnies overseas, including US citizens. According to Rooters, the committee voted in closed session earlier this week to approve legislative language that would require the US spy agencies to make public statistics on how many people were killed or injured in missile strikes launched from US-operated drones. The committee also approved language intended to bolster scrutiny of spy agency deliberations over decisions about targeting US citizens or residents for lethal drone strikes overseas. The B.O. regime has been under pressure from foreign governments, the UN and human rights ...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions... groups to be more transparent and rigorous in accounting for the civilian casualties caused by drone strikes. Though the committee did not release full details of its deliberations on the measures, sources familiar with the discussions said that some committee Republicans were opposed to the drone-related clauses in the bill, which would authorise intelligence activities for the current government fiscal year that began on October 1. With this in mind, some saner elements have stepped forward and started creating an environment of rapprochement, urging the JI to offer an apology and asking the military leadership to ignore it. One of the leading analysts, Ehsan Mahmood Khan, who recently authored a book, Human Security in Pakistain, said: "Syed Munawwar Hasan's statement looks to be an isolated and personal opinion. Consider a while that Liaquat Baloch, Jamaat-e-Islami's Secretary General, visited the native town of Major-General Sanaullah Khan Niazi in Daud Khel, Mianwali, on September 18, 2013. He offered condolences with the martyr's younger brothers, Rehmatullah Khan Niazi, DIG, and Ameenullah Khan, ex-Nazim, and paid rich tribute to the dear departed. The JI's local leadership was also accompanying him. Addressing a conference there he told the media that the Pakistain army's sacrifices in the defence of the country were matchless and unprecedented. 'The whole nation is proud of its brave soldiers and officers.' He said that the external involvement in this tragic act could not be unattended, as it has been traced in many cases in the past. This is the time that the Pakistain army, people, political government and media are on one page, which is good omen indeed. Does it mean that Munawwar Hasan and Liaquat Baloch have different views or their point of view is not that of the Jamaat-e-Islami?"Addressing a presser on the spot, he said that the sacrifices of Pakistain army to curb extremism are matchless, and that the entire nation is proud of its army men. However, man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them... another analyst, Hussain Naqi, has a different opinion. He said, "Howsoever belated, the ISPR retort to JI Amir Munawwar Hasan is interesting but one is surprised that the ISPR spokesperson was unaware that Munawwar's mentor Maulana Maudoodi, whom the ISPR spokesperson mentioned with admiration, had exactly similar views about the shuhada of Pakistain army's 1948 Kashmire war, and what Maulana Maudoodi had said about the creation of Pakistain is also well known. For almost half a century, the army top brass has been collaborating with the Jamaat-e-Islami and its political philosophy in violation of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah's secular standpoint about Pakistain's polity." In Shahbaz Thuttal's view, the Indians and CIA must be enjoying the outburst of the JI Ameer, as what they have been trying for the last over 60 years to divide the Pakistain nation in two groups and spread hatred against the army is now being actively done by the JI, who were the great supporters of Zia ul Haq ![]() and even became ministers under him. The Nawaz government should take a firm and strong stand. Now, otherwise, they will continue to be blackmailed by the JI. It is very strange that the PML-N is the only party that has not given any response so far, except for its Sindh Assembly minority that joined the resolution against the JI Amir's salvo. All other parties have supported the blurb. In his view, Riaz Jafri said, "I think we should bury the hatchet right here. The JI Ameer said something and the army and the general public gave their own point of view. That should be the end of it instead of insisting upon an 'unconditional apology' and the Ameer sticking to his own guns. Any further digging into the issue is likely to widen the chasm within the nation. Who is a shaheed and who is not, is not for them to decide. As a general belief all soldiers laying down their lives for their country and cause are assumed to be shaheed. Even in the Indian army any soldier dying on the front is called shaheed -- irrespective of his being a Mohammedan or non-Mohammedan. Muhammad Rafi's famous song has become immortal in this context and he is not addressing only the Indian Mohammedans in it: "Watan ki raah me watan ke naujavan shaheed ho/Pukarate hai ye zamin-o-aasama'an shaheed ho/Shaheed teri maut hi tere watan ki zindagi/Tere lahu se jaag uthegi is chaman ki zindagi." However, man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them... he said, Syed Munawwar Hasan should have refrained from giving his opinion on such a sensitive matter and his utterances can only be termed as most untimely, immature and thoughtless to the extent of being reckless on his part. Professor Alya Alvi has, however, raised very pertinent questions. She says that the former JI Ameer Qazi Hussain Ahmed ...the absolutely humorless, xenophobic former head of the Pak Jamaat-e-Islami. He was also head of the MMA, a coalition of religious parties formed after 2001 that eventually collapsed under the weight of the holy egos involved. Qazi was the patron of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar during the Afghan mujaheddin's war against the Soviets. His sermons are described as fiery, which means they rely heavily on gospel and not at all on logic. Qazi once recommended drinking camel pee for good health, but that was before his kidneys went... (late) twice survived murder attempts. If he were killed, what would then Munawwar Hasan call him: shaheed or killed? If, God forbid, Munawwar Hasan is killed in a kaboom, what would the JI call him: a martyr or just killed? The TTP forces of Evil killed namazis while offering Juma prayers in the Parade Lane mosque, and many other mosques and Imambargah ...since they're religiously correct™, Shia Moslems in Pakistain can't call their houses of worship 'mosques,' which are reserved for Sunnis. It's not clear if imambargahs are used for explosives storage like mosques are... s. Were those innocent Mohammedans not shaheed?" In fact, the JI and ![]() Deobandi holy man, known as Mullah Dieselduring the war against the Soviets, his sympathies for the Taliban have never been tempered by honesty ... 's statements have tried to damage the national cause and create confusion among the people, particularly the soldiers of our armed forces who are ever ready to sacrifice their lives as and when the nation calls for it. |

![]() Writing in Jang Nazir Naji stated that Pakistain was disturbed about Indian presence in Afghanistan and told the US that it should not be increased beyond a certain level. But then after Salala, Pakistain took too long deciding new terms of engagement with the US. That allowed India to get a better deal in Afghanistan with the consent of the NATO ...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Originally it was a mutual defense pact directed against an expansionist Soviet Union. In later years it evolved into a mechanism for picking the American pocket while criticizing the cut of the American pants... states, which saw Pakistain as being obstructive. PPP and Army to blame A leader of PMLN, Khurram Dastgir, told Express that the scandal of reopening the NATO supply route without proper conditions was the creation of both Pakistain Army and the PPP government. They ignored the parliamentary guidelines and allowed the Americans to drive a one-sided bargain. India did it! Quoted by Nawa-e-Waqt Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah stated that the Lahore killing of jail staff of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa ... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central... could be the work of India. After the Taliban announcement that they had killed the jail staff because they had been cruel to Taliban prisoners, it is presumed that India had bribed the Taliban - together with the US - to get them to kill innocent Paks. Justice Sharif's dues Daily Nawa-e-Waqt reported that Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was unfair when he wrote off the arrears of the house rent of ex-DG FIA Major Mushtaq, but did not do so in the case of former Lahore High Court chief justice Khwaja Sharif, who had overstayed in his official residence. He owed rent to the government and had received a notice asking him to pay up. Betrayal after Salala Columnist Hamid Mir wrote in Jang that Pakistain Army and the PPP government had reopened the NATO supply route in a very mysterious and non-transparent way. After Salala, Indo-Pak tensions mounted. They were lessened by Pakistain by releasing Indian spy Surjeet Singh, but India responded by unleashing the scandal of Abu Jandal, an Indian Moslem who it said was involved in the Mumbai attack and had also met Hafiz Muhammad Saeed ![]() ...who would be wearing a canvas jacket with very long sleeves anyplace but Pakistain... in Faisalabad ...formerly known as Lyallpur, the third largest metropolis in Pakistain, the second largest in Punjab after Lahore. It is named after some Arab because the Paks didn't have anybody notable of their own to name it after... , thus implicating Hafiz Muhammad Saeed in terrorism. Sheikh Rashid should join Imran Khan ![]() ... aka Taliban Khan, who isn't your heaviest-duty thinker, maybe not even among the top five... Columnist Nusrat Javeed wrote in Express that Sheikh Rashid who had eaten 900 rats (Urdu idiom) should now join Tehrik-e-Insaf ...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations.... of Imran Khan especially after Imran Khan had had a recent meeting with Jamaat-e-Islami ... It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores... chief Syed Munawwar Hasan, which could be the sign of a new direction for the Defence of Pakistain Council where Sheikh Rashid is always present. Judiciary soft on the Sharifs Firebrand Information Minister Sindh Sharjeel Memon told Express that the judiciary in Pakistain was favouring the PMLN and their leadership but the PPP was being supported by the 18 million people of Pakistain. Shoaib Akhtar wants to wed Meera! Quoted in Express, famous Pak filmstar Meera said that she was going to wed Captain Naveed but it was spoiled by ex-cricketer Shaoib Akhtar who was keen to marry her. She said she herself was keen on Shoaib Akhtar but he was responsible for obstructions in her plans to marry the US-based pilot. AQ Khan and El Baradei Famous columnist Abdul Qadir Hasan wrote in Express that famous Pak nuclear scientist and father of the bomb Dr AQ Khan had written that Egypt was thankfully rid of El Baradei who was an American agent hoping to become president of Egypt. El Baradei was head of the international nuclear authority IAEA that had raised objection to Dr Khan's project in Pakistain.
When the columnist burst into tears Writing in Express, Abdul Qadir Hasan stated that he was lucky enough to see the mosque in Damascus ...The place where Pencilneck hangs his brass hat... where Imam Ghazali wrote his famous book. He had seen all the world as a journalist but the joy he experienced in Central Asia he did not feel anywhere else. He visited the tomb of Imam Bukhari whose book of traditions was among the most beloved books in Islam. Hasan was so overcome that he burst into loud sobs (cheekhain nikal gaeen). He could not bear the greatness of the man who had compiled a book next only to the Koran. But maulvis get scared! Daily Express had columnist Abdul Qadir Hasan state that the state of Pakistain was great but lacked a great nation. These days a movement against America was launched by the holy mans of the country. They may be accused of anything but not of corruption. Corruption is a talent which also requires dishonesty. And the maulvis are free of those ills; yet they tend to get scared and draw back. Wukla go berserk Reported in Express, lawyers fell on the office bearers of Punjab Bar Council and broke the furniture of the room of the committee which had given a different verdict than they wanted in the case of insult to a lady lawyer. The wukla people were aroused to fury and shouted that the servants of the Bar had maltreated them as a result of which they had resorted to vandalism. No words to describe insulted honour World famous columnist Haroon Rashid wrote in Jang that Pakistain government was seeking comfort and was scared to struggle for truth and honour. Moslems had been complaining about this since the Mughal times. And now the reopening of NATO supply route had aroused the same feeling of hurt honour. This desire for comfort was forcing Moslems to lose their honour. American kick in our face Columnist Talat Husain wrote in Express that by saying sorry the way it did America had kicked Pakistain in the face. All observers of the region were agreed that America made an obscene gesture in the direction of Pakistain and then told it to get lost (apna rasta naapo). After this maltreatment the government with a parliamentary majority reopened the NATO supply route and did not even ask to be paid for the trucks passing through it. It is said that the Army was not happy with the way the apology was composed and made the Americans change its draft many times. Causes of supply route opening Columnist Saleem Safi wrote in Jang that the US wanted a deal with Hamid Maybe I'll join the TalibanKarzai ... A former Baltimore restaurateur, now 12th and current President of Afghanistan, displacing the legitimate president Rabbani in December 2004. He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtunface on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use... but not on his terms. When Pakistain delayed its decision on the NATO route the Americans gave Karzai what he wanted after which Karzai made a long term defence deal with them, allowing the Americans to keep some troops in Afghanistan till 2224. Pakistain reopened the NATO route because the member states other than the US were in a hurry to get out of Afghanistan. Imran Khan plays like Misbahul Haq Writing in Express Talat Husain stated that Imran Khan should have reacted strongly to the reopening of the NATO route but he did not. He should have hit sixers but he actually played like Misbahul Haq. His bat is straight but the ball is not going more than a few yards. When he put his analysis to Tehrik-e-Insaf leaders they did not like it. | |

JI sit-in over drone strikes concludes |

![]() ...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Originally it was a mutual defense pact directed against an expansionist Soviet Union. In later years it evolved into a mechanism for picking the American pocket while criticizing the style of the American pants... forces in Afghanistan would be blocked if drone attacks continued. Thousands of people carrying banners inscribed with anti-US slogans and party flags took part in the sit-in organised by the Jamaat-i-Islami. The huge crowd comprising party workers, supporters and trade union leaders was addressed by JI chief Syed Munawwar Hasan, Sindh and Bloody Karachi chapter chiefs of the party Asadullah Bhutto and Mohammad Husain Mehnati, respectively. Mr Hasan asked the government to stop supporting US policies which he said were detrimental to the illusory sovereignty of Pakistain. "Pakistain is a sovereign state and the US has no right to interfere in the internal affairs of the country," he said. The JI leader also called upon the authorities concerned to take immediate measures to implement the resolution passed in the parliament against drone attacks. He said the US wanted to destabilise Pakistain for its "ulterior motives" and for this purpose as many as 2.5 million CIA operatives were active in the country. Citing the example of Raymond Davis, he said there were many Raymond Davis operating in the country. Criticising government policies, the JI chief said: "A government has no right to call itself democratic when it does not honour decisions of parliament and the Supreme Court." Similarly, he added, the government could not claim itself Awami when it was incapable of solving problems of the people. He said increasing hours of power loadshedding, rising inflation, unemployment and a number of extortion cases that had become a matter of routine were results of the so-called war on terror. "The so-called war on terror is not ours. We are fighting the US war and killing our own people for the sake of dollars," he remarked. He said those who once were in the forefront to support US policies had started opposing its actions. The JI leader urged the government to review its foreign policy in the larger interest of the country. He said the next sit-in would be staged in Gujranwala to protest against drone attacks. The JI leader also criticised the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and termed it a "terrorist organisation". He said the MQM was equally responsible for "destroying the peace of Bloody Karachi by introducing an extortion culture in the city". He criticised the government's reconciliation policy and described it as hypocrisy designed to perpetuate its rule. The JI leader said the people wanted a change. However, The mauve However... he stressed the need for changing the attitude of the people. He urged the people not to vote for those who were responsible for the destruction of Bloody Karachi. |

JI chief calls for talks with Taliban |
2010-05-16 |
[Dawn] Jamaat-i-Islami chief Syed Munawwar Hasan says the only way to answer US threats and counter its pressure for military operation in North Waziristan is to stop all ongoing army operations and initiate a dialogue with all Taliban groups. "If composite dialogue can be held with India again and again, why not to engage Taliban of our own country," he said here on Friday. He said Swat Taliban leader Sufi Muhammad was accused of violating the Constitution and the peace agreement with him was scrapped but nationalist parties were openly talking against the Constitution and the law did not move against them. He said Pervez Musharraf abrogated the Constitution twice but instead of punishment, he was given a red carpet farewell. He said Sufi Muhammad's only fault was that he demanded enforcement of Sharia, perturbing 'Satanic' forces within the country and abroad. He said the agreement with Sufi Muhammad was scrapped under US pressure. |

JI says Pakistan should reject US aid on strict conditions |

Munawar predicts big jihad against US |
2009-05-11 |
![]() Referring to the failure of armed forces in operation against their own people in former East Pakistan, he urged the authorities to desist from taking up arms against their own people. Chiding the government claim that it was establishing its writ, he asked where was the so-called writ when scores of citizens were shot dead in Karachi on May 12, 2007 or when hundreds of citizens were kidnapped by the American agencies? Alleging that India was involved in the Lahore attacks and in Balochistan uprising, the JI amir demanded the government activate its foreign missions to expose New Delhi. He said either the United States itself was massacring Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan or was patronising other powers Israel and India engaged in anti-Muslim actions. He said the United States had always tried to destabilise Pakistan and make India a mini-superpower of the region. He said it was for this reason that Washington was pressing Islamabad to withdraw its forces from the Indian border. Despite being the first public event of the new JI amir, attendance at the rally was not impressive though it was not restricted to Lahore-based workers only and activists from nearby districts had also been transported to the show. The party leadership had claimed that the strength of the rally would run into hundreds of thousands to give a strong message to the United States and Pakistani government that the masses were against the army operation alleged to be launched at the behest of Washington. The rally also lacked spirit, enthusiasm and zeal, which has usually been the hallmark of the events organised by religious parties. |

JI concerned over showing video of girl's flogging |
2009-04-08 |
[The News (Pak)] The Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed grave concern over a video clip showing alleged flogging of a girl being aired constantly by different TV channels despite that "it was seriously disliked and public protests were held to condemn it." "It appears that the rigorous publicity campaign of the video aims at preventing president Asif Zardari from signing the Nizam-e-Adl Ordinance or to create hurdles in the way of Shariah enforcement in NWFP," says JI central Shoora in a resolution passed in its ongoing meeting at Mansoorah chaired by ameer Syed Munawwar Hasan. The Shoora said the video looked a conspiracy instead of some humanitarian effort, which would neither benefit the people of Swat nor help in establishing supremacy of law and eliminating the prevailing anarchy in the area. The resolution demanded immediate implementation of the Nizam-e-Adl Ordinance and the peace agreement already announced by the government. It expressed concern over the delay in implementation of Nizam-e-Adl and reminded that it had been a longstanding demand of the people of the area. These people have been suffering from lawlessness for the past few years, particularly during the military operation of the last year, but they witnessed peace after the peace agreement signed between government and Maulana Soofi Mohammad. The Shoora also expressed concern over the increasing murder and looting incidents in Dir Paeen district, bordering district Swat, and cited an incident in which former district Nazim and JI leader Alam Zeb Khan, his brother, district Police officer and his companion were ruthlessly murdered in broad daylight. Their killers were not apprehended. |

JI declares Munawwar as new Amir |
2009-03-29 |
![]() Qazi has declined to stand for office, presumably because of his heart condition. According to details provided by the party's election commission, out of 23,480 JI members, 91.30% used their right to vote. The election commission did not disclose the number of votes baged by the new Amir. However, sources said Munawwar Hasan got more than 55% votes while the remaining were shared by other nominees of the JI Shoora -- Liaquat Baloch and Sirajul Haq. The balloting process, started on March 1, continued for four weeks. Since its inception on August 26, 1941, the JI had been holding elections for new Amir after every five years. Maulana Syed Abul A'ala was elected as its first Amir followed by Mian Tufail Muhammad in 1972 and Qazi Hussain Ahmad in 1987. Syed Munawar Hasan hails from a distinguished family, based in Delhi before partition of the Subcontinent. He was born in August 1944 and his family migrated to Karachi in 1947 after partition. He did masters in Sociology (1963) and Islamic Studies (1966) from Karachi University. Syed Munawar Hasan joined the National Students Federation (NSF) - a student body with leftist leaning - and was elected its president in 1959. He joined IJT in 1960 and became president of its Karachi University Unit, Karachi City Unit and member of the Central Executive Council. He was elected Nazim-e-Aala in 1964 and served in that capacity for three consecutive terms. |
