Debka sez Zarqawi successors proliferate
2006-06-13
President Bush says the military will now target Abu Musab al-Zarqawi’s successor.

But who is that successor? Al Qaeda is offering a selection. The latest statement released Monday, June 12, says: “The shura council of al Qaeda in Iraq has unanimously agreed on Sheikh Abu Hamza al-Muhajir as successor to Sheikh Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.” It was posted on a Web side the Islamists frequently used and added a pledge that the new leader would keep up his predecessor’s campaign of beheadings and suicide bombings.

DEBKAfile’s counter terror sources report al Qaeda experts in Western agencies running the global war on terror, or even circles close to al Qaeda, have never heard of Mr al-Muhajir. His name, they say, hints at a possible Afghan origin.

Even al Qaeda’s adherents in Iraq are stumped by the identity of their new commander – doubly confused by the bulletins on similar Web sites which all name different successors.

Our Iraq sources list them as: Abdul Rahman al Iraqi, Zarqawi’s deputy; Rashid Baghdadi, an Iraqi believed to head the shura council; Abu Asil, an ex-colonel in Saddam Hussein’s general intelligence service.

DEBKAfile offers three optional reasons for the profusion of published successors:

1. A deliberate campaign to obscure the real identity of the new al Qaeda commander in Iraq.

2. A split in the shura council or a dispute in the top command over the choice.

3. A power struggle among local al Qaeda branches - each with its own commander, which would mean a serious division in al Qaeda’s ranks in Iraq.

Time will tell which of the three is closest to what is happening in the jihadist organization five days after its decapitatation.

WND : Palestinian cleric : God bless Osama
2005-11-08
Asks Gaza congregation to pray for global terror leader, deputy
By Aaron Klein
© 2005 WorldNetDaily.com

JERUSALEM – The Palestinian cleric from one of the most popular mosques in the Gaza Strip this weekend asked his congregation to pray for al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden and his deputy Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, explaining the global terror leaders share the Palestinian goals of destroying Israel and ending "American world domination," WND has learned.

The reports are the latest evidence of ideological links between Palestinian groups and al-Qaida, with Israeli security officials saying bin Laden's network infiltrated Gaza last month and is currently operating from the territory.

"May Allah guard and bless Sheikh Osama bin Laden and Sheikh Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who are both leading the jihad against the Zionist entity and against American domination of the world. Pray for Sheikh bin Laden and Sheikh Zarqawi," said Dr. Jamil Mutaweh, a leader of the large Abu Dur Mosque in Khan Yunis, Palestinian sources in Gaza told WND.

Khan Yunis, a southern Gaza city, is one of the most populated Palestinian towns.

Mutaweh made the comments during his Friday sermon at the mosque, which was particularly crowded this past Friday, Palestinian sources say, because it was the second day of Eid al-Fitr, a three day Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan.

Sources close to the Palestinian Authority told WND the PA has been made aware of Mutaweh's comments and is deciding whether to investigate.

Mutaweh's sermon seems to stress an ideological link between al-Qaida and Palestinian groups.

Reuven Erlich, director of the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center at Israel's Center for Special Studies, previously told WND the link can be emphasized through Palestinian cleric Dr. Abdullah Azzam, who was al-Qaida's ideologue and, until Azzam's death, Osama bin Laden's spiritual mentor.

"We found Azzam's picture on Hamas posters from Gaza and a lot of Hamas' material," said Erlich. "Azzam's portrait in materials reveal that he is perceived by Hamas as one of the four 'outstanding figures' of the Islamic 'struggle' in Palestine and around the world."

Mutaweh's speech also comes as Israeli security officials tell WND al-Qaida is present in the Gaza Strip and is seeking to attack the Jewish state.

"Al-Qaida operatives took advantage of the opened Rafah border [with Egypt immediately following Israel's withdrawal from the area last month] and entered Gaza," said Maj. Gen. Aharon Zeevi Farkash, chief of intelligence for the Israeli Defense Forces.

Following Israel's troop withdrawal Sept. 12, Gaza's border with Egypt was wide open, with thousands of Palestinians – including known terrorissts – passing freely from one side to the other for a period of at least six days.

Egyptian officials attempted to close the border several times, but Hamas and other terror groups managed to reopen the crossing, once using a controlled explosion along the border fence and another time ramming a dump truck through the border wall.

Palestinian officials admitted to reporters terror groups were able to smuggle tons of weapons into Gaza, including explosives, ammunition and rocket-propelled grenades that had long been stockpiled in Sinai, but denied al-Qaida was present.

"These reports are baseless," chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told WND. "Egypt did a good job in cracking down on cells in their country, and they wouldn't have allowed any al-Qaida people to get into Gaza."

An aide to Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei told WND on condition of anonymity, "It would certainly be against our interests to say al-Qaida was in our territory."

Hamas chief Mahmoud al-Zohar went so far as to accuse Israel of sending fake al-Qaida agents into Gaza so it can claim the global jihad group was liaising with Palestinian organizations.

"All these talks about the presence of al-Qaida is Israeli talks and propaganda," said al-Zahar in an exclusive WND interview.

"We know that Israel tried through its agents to have contacts with marginal activists in the Palestinian resistance. The agents represented themselves as al-Qaida members and tried to tempt these people with money and weapons. This is part of the Israeli effort to represent things even though they are not that way in order to say that al-Qaida exists in the Gaza Strip," al-Zahar said.

But WND reported last week some members of al-Zarah's Hamas have become disillusioned with the terror group, renouncing their membership and instead trying to form their own al-Qaida network.

Israeli prison officials said nine jailed Hamas terrorists "with blood on their hands," including two militants trained in Afghanistan and Pakistan, tried to set up the al-Qaida cell last month. Officials said the cell planned to direct attacks on behalf of al-Qaida by sending messages to terrorists outside the Israeli prison.

Said a prison official, "The jailed terrorists renounced their membership in Hamas. They didn't think Hamas was carrying out enough attacks. ... They thought Hamas was too focused on trying to join upcoming Palestinian legislative elections. So they joined with al-Qaida."

Aksa Brigades endorse Iran's call to eliminate Israel
2005-11-06
The armed wing of the ruling Fatah party, Aksa Martyrs Brigades, on Sunday became the first Palestinian group to publicly endorse Iran's call to eliminate Israel.

In a leaflet distributed in the Gaza Strip, the group voiced full support for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's statements in which he said that Israel "must be wiped off the map."

Ahmadinejad also warned Arab countries against developing economic ties with Israel in response to its withdrawal form the Gaza Strip, which he dubbed as a "trick."

"Anybody who recognizes Israel will burn in the fire of the Islamic nation's fury," he was quoted as saying. "Any [Islamic leader] who recognizes the Zionist regime means he is acknowledging the surrender and defeat of the Islamic world."

The leaflet by the Fatah group is the first of its kind since the Iranian president's speech. Both Hamas and Islamic Jihad, which are believed to be receiving financial aid from Iran, have refrained from reacting to the call to wipe Israel off the map.

"We affirm our support and backing for the positions of the Iranian president toward the Zionist state which, by God's will, will cease to exist," said the leaflet. "Recognizing Israel's right to exist means underestimating the Palestinian people, who are making daily sacrifices to liberate Palestine and Jerusalem."

The Fatah group also hailed Ahamdinejad's appeal to the Palestinians to unite their ranks so they would be able to destroy Israel.

Palestinian Authority officials in Ramallah told the Jerusalem Post that the leaflet does not reflect the stance of the PA or its chairman, Mahmoud Abbas. "We strongly condemn the leaflet," said one official. "We believe it does not even reflect the position of the Aksa Martyrs Brigades."

The PA is now in the process of incorporating hundreds of gunmen from the Aksa Martyrs Brigades into the PA security forces. Last month the PA cabinet decided to set up five training camps in the West Bank to prepare the gunmen for their new missions. The PA's plan is supported by both the US and Israel.

In a related development, Professor Abdel Sattar Kassem of An-Najah Univeristy in Nablus lashed out at the US, Britain, France and Israel for expressing their revulsion at the Iranian leader's remarks.

"These aggressive countries, which specialize in political fraud and the exploitation of other people, did not express reservations when Palestine was wiped off the map in 1948," he said.

"Millions of Palestinian refugees have been living for the past 60 years under harsh conditions so that Israel could continue to exist. And these countries, which have been emphasizing their keenness about human rights, insist on preventing these refugees from returning to their homes and property. Israel remains an alien organ in the Arab and Muslim region."

In another development, a Palestinian preacher on Friday delivered a sermon in the southern Gaza Strip in which he saluted Osama bin Laden and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

According to a report by the Palestine News Network, the sermon was delivered by Dr. Jamil Mutawi, a senior representative of Hamas.

"May God bless Sheikh Osama bin Laden and Sheikh Abu Musab al Zarqawi, who are both leading the jihad against the Zionist entity and against American domination of the world," he reportedly told worshippers on the second day of the Muslim feast of Eid al-Fitr.

Zark rants
2005-07-07
The Commander and Chief of Al-Qaida in the Land of the Two Rivers, Sheikh Abu Musab al-Zarqawi released a new audio address today in which he makes an emotional, hour long presentation that has some harsh words for George Bush, as well as some strong tonic for the men of the Muslim Ummah who are lagging behind leaving the women to do the fighting. In the almost one hour long address, al-Zarqawi wastes no words in challenging the American president to call upon his “god” for assistance against the ever increasing and effect resistance being wage by the Mujahideen.
"Is this thing on?"
“This is a message for Bush, the arrogant: Your strength has deluded you and you thought that bringing this Ummah to its knees was going to be a cake walk. It never occurred to you that Allah was not going to be kind to you. You claimed that your god ordered you to start this war against us. Where is your god now? The whole world is now witnessing your disgraceful defeat in Iraq at the hands of the people of Tawheed (oneness). Bush, if your god is for real, I challenge you to invoke him to save you from the swaps of Iraq. You once said that those “Mujahideen” worship a wicked idol. Well, the Mujahideen worship Allah and He alone is worthy of being worshiped. It is He (Allah) who filled the hearts of your already coward soldiers with fear of Mujahideen. If your god is for real, invoke him to give your soldiers the courage to stand up and fight.”
In this poignant message, al-Zarqawi also dishes out some strong words to the so-called men of the Muslim Ummah who continue to keep their heads buried in the sand, making several references to Umm Umarah who defended the prophet (pbuh) courageously when the men ran from the battlefield in the battle of Uhod.
“A Mujahid woman is a woman who raises her child not to live but to fight to defend Allah’s religion and die for it.” Shiekh al-Zarqawi goes on to say “Many Iraqi women have written to me asking to permit them to carry out martyrdom operations. One woman has been begging me for 8 months, writing letters to me, not with ink, but with her tears, asking to join the martyrdom brigade. Isn’t a shame that we may have to recruit women because men have turned blind eyes and deaf ears to what the cross worshippers do to their religion and their honor? These days are similar to the days of Umm Umarah who defended the prophet when men ran away from the battle field.”
True to what has become his confident and unflinching style, the Sheikh boldly reiterates his position over again with utter determination.
"If the entire Al-Qaida organization in the land of the Two Rivers is wiped out, I mean if all Mujahideen were wiped out in order to free our sisters from the cross worshipper’s prisons and the prisons of the apostate Shia’h, we will not hesitate for one second to pay this small price."
The sworn enemy of US forces and the apostate Iraqi Army, Sheikh al-Zarqawi vows to continue attacking them as he dares to set his sights past Iraq in this latest audio tape.
“We can’t wait to finish the job in the land of the Two Rivers; our next stop is liberating Al-Quds.”

Jihad Unspun: Tape To Bin Laden Indicates New Battle Plans Are Forthcoming
2005-05-31
A new 20 minute audio tape was released yesterday by the leader of Al-Qaeda in Iraq, Sheikh Abu Musab al-Zarqawi to Sheikh Osama Bin Laden, informing the head of al-Qaeda's global operations of several important issues. The message indicates that the audio tape has been sent directly from one of the many battlefields inside Iraq.

In this latest message, Zarqawi confirms that plans to break the back of the cross worshippers are going well and the enemies are dong exactly what the Mujahideen want them to do. He further refers to a report that has been sent to Shiekh bin Laden and advises they are waiting further instructions, indicating that something major may be in the works, clarifies his battlefield injuries and advises his Amir that he continues to direct engagements inside Iraq on the front lines.

Zarqawi begins his statement by saying addressing Sheikh Osama bin Laden;

"From a soldier standing at the front line to his Amir (commander)"

He then goes on to dispel the myth that he has suffered serious injuries or has been killed, that even now some mainstream new agencies continue to report .

"My beloved Amir, various news agencies have been spreading false rumors about my being seriously wounded and receiving treatment at Ramadi hospital. The truth is what our media department announced; I was lightly wounded. However, I am well and I continue to direct all of our operations from the front lines from many locations in the land of the two rivers."

Zarqawi confirms that the battles are going according to plans are going well and states he is awaiting instructions from Shiekh bin laden, indicating that a plan is in the works.

"My beloved Amir, things could not have been better, the enemies of Allah are doing exactly what we want them to do. Things are going according to plans. I trust that details of our operations are either in your hand by now or on their way to you. My beloved Amir, your young soldier here (Zarqawi) awaits your orders."

Zarqawi also enjoins the success of the Battle of Qaim in this new tape, where US soldiers and their collaborators paid a hefty price and were eventually forced to retreat.

"My beloved Amir, the US Marines have suffered the most disgraceful defeat at the hands of your soldiers, the soldiers of Allah, in Al-Qaim. The 10 day Battle of Qaim will go into history as one of the greatest Islamic battles. After ten days of fierce fighting, the US marines had to abandon their equipment, their dead, and had to withdraw from the battlefield, licking their wounds in total disgrace.

My beloved Amir, the American commander of US forces in Qaim, General Drink Wine (a slight on the pagan General) had arrogantly said "We will defeat them (Mujahideen) even if Muhammad and Muhammad's God were both with them". We were pleased to hear him saying that because we knew that Allah will disgrace him and will give us victory over him.

General Drink Wine could not stand the intense fire power of the Mujahideen on the ground, so he took to the skies in a helicopter thinking that he would be safe, but Allah guided the shots from one Mujahid that hit the General's helicopter. The aircraft went down in flames, and so did he. "

What is most notable in this new tape is that Zarqawi speaking with a new level of assurance about the progress being made against the Iraqi occupiers. While the true number of American casualties continue to be swept under the carpet, it appears by all counts, including daily reports, that the Mujahideen now united under Zarqawi's central command are gaining significant ground, progressing exactly as planned and that a further strategies are in the works. We are endeavoring to bring you the complete translation of this tape within the next few days, inshaAllah. For our Arabic viewers, the complete uncensored audio tape is available under our uncensored news section.

40,000 Iraqi troops throughout Baghdad to target terrorists
2005-05-27
BAGHDAD — Deepening the speculation about the severity of battle injuries to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, his followers Thursday squabbled on the Web over naming a new leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq, exposing rifts and raising questions about how the insurgency may change.
May has seen one of the bloodiest waves of violence to date in Iraq. More than 620 Iraqis and 60 US troops have died since the Shiite-led government was formed April 28.

Analysts say the insurgency can probably carry on for now with or without Mr. Zarqawi's guiding hand, pointing to the high level of bloodshed that killed at least 13 more people Thursday. But it is under increasing pressure from numerous US offensives in western Iraq, the loss of two-dozen top lieutenants, and intelligence from Zarqawi's captured computer. Iraq's budding government is also tightening its grip, announcing Thursday that it would launch a new offensive with 40,000 troops and set up 600 checkpoints in Baghdad.

"These operations will aim to turn the government's role from defensive to offensive," said Iraqi Interior Minister Bayan Jabor. Mr. Jabor said he is "not sure whether [Zarqawi] is dead, but we are sure that he is injured."

The long-term impact on a driving force behind the multifaceted insurgency may depend on whether Zarqawi dies or recovers enough to become "spiritual leader" of the group. "It won't make a great deal of difference if he has a more backseat role, but he will be more vulnerable," says Magnus Ranstorp, head of the Center for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence at St. Andrews University in Scotland.

"If he dies, it would be a blow," says Mr. Ranstorp, contacted in Copenhagen. "It may atomize the insurgency, and different centers of gravity would emerge. He is a unifying factor for them."
So, okay, he dies.
Those divisions already appear to be taking root, with competing claims Thursday on the Web about the appointment of an interim leader of the group. A website that frequently posts statements by Al Qaeda in Iraq wrote: "The leaders met after the wounding of our Sheikh Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, may God heal him, and decided to appoint a deputy to assume the leadership until the return of our Sheikh safely."

According to that statement, the chosen man is Sheikh Abu Hafs al-Qarni - a Saudi militant who is believed to be Zarqawi's military adviser. He is "renowned for carrying out the most difficult operations" chosen by Zarqawi, on whose head Washington has placed a $25 million bounty. But shortly afterward, a new statement was posted, refuting the first and signed with the name normally attached to statements by Al Qaeda in Iraq. "We deny all that has been said about appointing the so-called Abu Hafs or anyone by any other name," it read.

Information about Zarqawi's condition is surfacing as several trends buffet the insurgency. US and Iraqi forces, which have launched three major offensives in the volatile western Anbar Province this month, report a rapid increase in intelligence they get from Iraqis weary of the violence, as well as from senior detainees.

The intense violence of May has also hidden the fact that fewer attacks have taken place against US and Iraqi government targets, according to US officials. They say that the current surge - 118 car bombs since mid-April - was ordered by Zarqawi at a meeting last month in Syria.

Zarqawi mouthpiece posts get well messages
2005-05-25
Supporters of the al Qaeda leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, filled Islamist bulletin boards on the Internet with prayers for his recovery on Wednesday after his group said he had been wounded. A statement posted on Tuesday on sites used by insurgents called on Muslims to "pray for the healing of our Sheikh Abu Musab al-Zarqawi from an injury he suffered in the path of God".

Signed in the name of the Al Qaeda Organisation for Holy War in Iraq, its authenticity could not be verified. But get-well messages flowed in from dozens of concerned supporters. Within hours one posting had launched a "million prayers of recovery campaign", quickly garnering over 70 responses. "Do not be sparing in your prayers for a speedy recovery for the Sheikh and may God return him to the fray in safety," the poster said, signing off with a graphic that featured Zarqawi's face, a bloodied knife and the words "behead".

"O God, take away the pain of Abu Musab, and heal him, since their is no healing or medicine other than from You," wrote a group calling itself the Global Islamic Media Front.

"Take the health and well-being of the kings and tyrants and bestow it upon your servant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi," another user said in prayer.

One user sought to reassure readers that "mujahideen in Iraq" revealed to him that Zarqawi had escaped to a neighbouring country with a lung wound and breathing difficulties.

Some said the posting about Zarqawi's injury was a lie. "This news is empty of truth and aims to unsettle us. We should check before spreading this kind of thing," one supporter said.

Zarquawi Hurt(?)
2005-05-24
IRAQ'S MOST WANTED 'HURT'
Iraq's most wanted man, insurgent leader Abu Musab al Zarqawi, has been wounded, according to an al Qaeda website. Al Zarqawi is suspected of being behind the beheading of British hostage Ken Bigley and the death of aid worker Margaret Hassan. "O nation of Islam... Pray for the healing of our Sheikh Abu Musab al-Zarqawi from an injury he suffered in the path of God," said a statement from the al Qaeda Organisation for Holy War in Iraq.
They wouldn't comment on it if it wasn't serious. One thing they are reliable about is lamenting the fallen "warriors".
Pray for sepsis...
The statement, posted by the group's media coordinator, Abu Maysarah al Iraqi, did not say how or when al Zarqawi was injured. Al Iraqi is known to be the group's media coordinator, but there was no way to confirm if he had posted the statement himself. Al Zarqawi has claimed responsibility for scores of attacks against Iraqi civilians and security forces, as well as kidnappings. There is a $25m bounty on his head. "Let the near and far know that the injury of our leader is an honour, and a cause to close in on the enemies of God, and a reason to increase the attacks against them," the statement said.
"Win one for the Zaripper!"
In Baghdad, Lieutenant Colonel Steve Boylan, spokesman for US forces in Iraq, said: "We have no information on whether he's wounded or what the state of his health is." He also said that such reports had been heard frequently before and were almost impossible to verify. "This could be another one of their ploys, you never know," he added. The Pentagon in Washington said it had no basis to confirm or deny the story.

Terror Networks
Al-Zarqawi Taking More Public Role
2004-05-12
Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the terrorist leader allegedly claiming responsibility for the graphic beheading of a U.S. civilian in Iraq, is adopting an increasingly public and influential role in the decentralized world of Islamic militants, U.S. officials and terrorism experts say.
Wonder if he's having dreams of being Head Turban?
Can't do it. He's not a Soddy. Best he can hope for is Grand Vizir...
On Tuesday, an Islamic Web site released a video titled "Abu Musab al-Zarqawi Shown Slaughtering an American," which chronicles the beheading of Nicholas Berg.
On some sites it's also reportedly titled, "Sheikh Abu Musab al-Zarqawi slaughters an American infidel with his own hands",according to one translation.

In the most gruesome moments, five men disguised by head scarves and ski masks shout "Allahu Akbar!" — or "God is great." As recently as March, U.S. officials said al-Zarqawi's modus operandi was not to make taped public pronouncements nor to claim credit for attacks. But that changed five weeks ago when he released what is believed to be his first audiotape — a 33-minute recording in which he called on Sunni Muslims in Iraq to "burn the earth under the occupiers' feet." Then, he claimed responsibility for the attacks on the U.N. headquarters in Baghdad and an Italian police station in Nasiriyah, among others. At least two other tapes involving al-Zarqawi, including the beheading, have followed.
It's almost like he's in charge, or want's to be.
It was unclear whether al-Zarqawi, thought to be an ally of Osama bin Laden, though running his own "Zarqawi network," was shown in Tuesday's video, or whether he was simply claiming responsibility for ordering the execution.
I'd say ordering
The authenticity of the tape, found on a Web site known for carrying militant Islamic messages, also could not be verified Tuesday.
I think that's pretty clear now.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a U.S. intelligence official said authorities were still reviewing the tape to glean information. For some time, the intelligence community has been paying attention to al-Zarqawi, also known as Ahmed al-Khalayleh. The Jordanian has been described as an al-Qaida associate, a senior operations planner and, in Iraq, a leader of a network targeting Americans. A specialist in poisons, he spent time in Afghanistan's camps alongside al-Qaida fighters and other militant Muslims. And, over the years, al-Zarqawi also is thought to have developed ties to terrorist groups ranging from Iraq's Ansar al-Islam to Egyptian Islamic Jihad.
He seems to be Operations Director - Europe/Middle East.
Senior U.S. officials view him as evidence of an evolution under way, as the al-Qaida organization and its affiliates — under siege by the United States — devolve into a more diffuse, less centrally organized network of militants who follow al-Qaida ideology. At a recent congressional hearing, the State Department's counterterrorism director, Cofer Black, named the Zarqawi network on a short list of threats to the United States and its allies as this decentralization takes place. "Literally scores of such groups are present around the world today," Black said. Black said jihadists view Iraq as a "new training ground to build their extremist credentials and hone the skills of the terrorist."
We should make it a place for them to get dead...
Another U.S. official, also speaking Tuesday, said al-Zarqawi had increased the size of his network and his capabilities in Iraq, giving him increasing opportunities to carry out his operations. Bruce Hoffman, a terrorism expert at the Rand Corp. think tank, said he believed al-Zarqawi was after power.
Dreaming of that turban, maybe he knows Binny won't be needing it.
"He is not competing with al-Qaida, but he's emulating it," he said.
He's not competing because he's a senior member.
Last month, al-Zarqawi was sentenced to death in absentia in Jordan for masterminding the 2002 murder of Laurence Foley, a diplomat and administrator of U.S. aid programs in Jordan. Now believed to be in Iraq, al-Zarqawi is thought to be behind at least a dozen high-profile attacks there that have killed hundreds.
He was thought to be in Fallujah, but he's most likely slipped away.
The United States is offering a $10 million reward for information leading to his death or capture.
Need to raise that price, he's more dangerous than Binny.
We need to put a dedicated kill squad on his case. If we don't have one, ask the Israelis if we can borrow one.

More from Fox News:

Abu Musab Zarqawi, the one-legged Jordanian behind the horrific beheading of a U.S. hostage, has emerged as one of the most dangerous terrorists in the world — and could soon eclipse Usama bin Laden in importance. The slaughter of American Nick Berg was just the latest in a massive series of bloody and spectacular attacks on U.S. and Western interests in Iraq and Europe that have been attributed to the shadowy al-Tawhid network commanded by Zarqawi. With bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, on the run, Zarqawi, who operates separately from al Qaeda, has increasingly taken up the global jihad banner.
Why do they keep saying he's not al-Qaeda?

He has backed up his bid to become the next bin Laden with a massive string of deadly bombings in Iraq and fiendish chemical and poison plots in Europe and the Middle East. Lately, he's been making a series of bin Laden-style statements to Arabic TV stations calling for a religious civil war and the assassination of top U.S. military and civilian leaders in Iraq.
"He is clearly the most active terrorist in the world right now, and what you are seeing is a rise in his stature as well as a rise in his ego," said Jonathan Schanzer, a terrorism analyst for the Washington Institute for Near East Policy (search).
"Bin Laden and Zawahiri are hiding out in caves in Waziristan [northwestern Pakistan], so he is going for spectacular operations to seize the spotlight. This is a man who is committed to the utopian vision of the demise of the West and the rise of a radical Islamic world, and he sees Iraq as the main theater of operations to accomplish that goal."
More:Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a U.S. official said that authorities were still reviewing the tape to gather information. Among other facets being examined, the official noted that the tape's posted name refers to al-Zarqawi as a ``sheikh'' - an Arab title of respect frequently reserved for religious elders or leaders, not seen in previous public references to him.
If that is the correct translation, Abu just got a promotion. Or gave himself one.
