French prosecutors seek long jail terms for Charlie Hebdo attack suspects
2020-12-09
[ENGLISHBETA.ALARABIYA.NET] Prosecutors on Tuesday sought stiff sentences from five years to life in jail for 14 suspected accomplices of the Death Eater button men who murdered cartoonists and killed hostages at a Jewish supermarket in Gay Paree in 2015.Sixteen people were killed in the attack at Charlie Hebdo

satirical magazine, which had published cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed and during a hostage-taking three days later.

One of the three assailants, all of whom were killed by police in shootouts, also rubbed out a policewoman.

Those on trial since September are accused of providing varying degrees of logistical support to Charlie Hebdo killers Cherif and Said Kouachi and supermarket hostage-taker Amedy Coulibaly. They deny the charges.

Three of the fourteen suspects, who range in age from 29 to 68 and include Coulibaly’s girlfriend Hayat Boumeddiene,
...wife of Mali-Frenchman Amedy Coulibaly, she decamped for ISIS in Syria just before his particular excitement. She reportedly died of an airstrike during the Battle of Baghuz Fawqani...
are being tried in absentia.

Boumeddiene fled to Syria shortly after the attacks. Her whereabouts is not known.

Prosecutors sought a life term for Ali Riza Polat,
...born in Istanbul, he moved with his family to France at age three, and grew up in the same Paris suburb as his dear friend Mr. Coulibaly, where he early embarked on a life of drug dealing and petty crime. He claims to have converted to Islam (from what?) in 2014. His major triumph appears to have been marrying his defense lawyer, Isabelle Coutant-Peyre, who once defended Carlos the Jackal ...
a 35-year-old French-Ottoman Turkish national, presented during the trial as Coulibaly’s "right-hand man" accused of helping him and the Kouachi brothers secure weapons.

Polat admitted to the court he had taken part in various "scams" but denied any knowledge of what Coulibaly, who had sworn allegiance to ISIS Death Eater group, and his accomplices were planning.

Polat’s co-accused, including two men who spent time in jail alongside Coulibaly, also denied any hand in the attacks and rejected allegations of being radicalized.

The killing of the cartoonists caused deep shock in secular La Belle France, which has a tradition of anti-holy manal satire.

After the start of the trial, the cartoons were at the center of another deadly attack in October, with a young Chechen refugee beheading teacher Samuel Paty for showing some of the caricatures to pupils in a class on free speech.

France to try 14 people over Jan 2015 Paris attacks

satirical magazine, a policewoman, and a Jewish supermarket killed 17 people.

French anti-terror judges have recommended that 14 people be tried in connection with the January 2015 jihadist attacks in and around Gay Paree, a judicial source told AFP Friday.

The attacks against the Gay Paree offices of the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine, a policewoman in the nearby suburb of Montrouge, and a Jewish supermarket killed 17 people and marked the start of a wave of jihadist attacks in La Belle France.

Eleven people are in jug suspected of assisting in the attacks, while another three are wanted by police.

Under French law, they can appeal the decision to send them to trial.

The trial, whose date will be determined at a later date, will come more than four years after brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi killed 12 people at the offices of Charlie Hebdo on January 7, 2015.

The next day a policewoman was bumped off just outside Gay Paree, while another gunman, Amedy Coulibaly, took hostages at a Jewish Hyper Cacher shop, four of whom were killed.

All three attackers were killed in two separate shootouts with police.

Those to be tried are accused of "complicity" in assisting the attackers, including providing them with weapons.

Judicial sources said investigations in connection with the attacks were continuing, notably in Yemen, which one of the Kouachi brothers visited in 2011.

Responsibility for the attack against Charlie Hebdo was claimed by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

It will be up to anti-terrorist judges to decide whether all 14 are tried.

The decision comes nearly four years after brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi and Amedy Coulibaly killed 12 people at the offices of Charlie Hebdo on January 7, 2015.

The next day a policewoman was killed just outside Gay Paree, while another gunman took hostages at a Jewish supermarket, four of whom were killed.

Trio Suspected of Providing Weapons to Charlie Hebdo Attackers Arrested

by French authorities Monday, suspected of providing weapons to the Islamist murderous Moslems who attacked the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo

in 2015.

Two of the arrests took place in Haute-Marne and in the Ardennes on Monday and another on Tuesday. A 28-year-old woman along with two men, one aged 46, were taken into custody as French Sherlocks suspect they may have had a role in procuring weapons for the terror attackers L’Express reports.

The arrests are just the latest in a series of arrests related to the terror attack in which Islamist brothers Sherif and Said Kouachi bumped off twelve people including two coppers and eight employees of Charlie Hebdo. Some of the arrests were also linked to the Kosher supermarket terror attack committed by Amédy Coulibaly who killed four Jewish men.

A total of thirteen individuals have been arrested in connection with both of the attacks including many who are believed to have provided logistical support to Amédy Coulibaly.

Despite the attacks occurring two and a half years ago, authorities have yet to determine where the murderous Moslems obtained their automatic weaponry. While they have attempted to crack into encrypted messaging applications, so far police have had trouble coming up with any concrete leads.

Military-grade weapons have been found on several occasions in La Belle France in recent months in various raids relating to drugs and organised crime. Last week police arrested four men in the regions of Eure-et-Loir, Eure and Yvelines after locating a massive weapons arsenal that included loaded anti-tank rocket launchers, automatic rifles and other military-style weapons.

While the raids that have turned up such weapons have been primarily linked to drug rings, other countries have noticed an overlap between narco gangs and radical Islamists.

In Germany, authorities arrested nine Syrian asylum seekers in July who were not only linked to radical Islamism but were part of the illegal narcotics scene as well.

Berlin Christmas Market terror attacker Anis Amri was also suspected of dealing drugs. Many have criticised Berlin police for not using the opportunity to deport the failed Tunisian asylum seeker before he committed the terror attack as they discovered his drug dealing a full month prior.

Hamyd Mourad, 20, was originally thought to have been the getaway driver when two Al-Qaeda operatives massacred 12 people around the Gay Paree offices of the satirical magazine in January 2015.

There was a huge campaign aimed at releasing Hamyd, who was then a teenager, with classmates eventually providing an alibi then led to him being released without charge.

But now ‐ in what appears to be another huge failure by La Belle France’s security agencies ‐ Mourad was intercepted in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
on July 28th as he tried to join the Isis caliphate in Syria.

Mourad, who remained on a terrorist watch list in La Belle France, was deported to Bulgaria, where he remains in a detention centre awaiting his return to La Belle France.

Gay Paree intelligence sources told the Journal du Dimanche newspaper that material found in Mourad’s backpack, including a phone and laptop computer, made him a clear 'candidate for jihad’. It added that anti-terrorism prosecutors in Gay Paree had ’opened a judicial investigation in order to issue a European arrest warrant for him.’

The Charleville-Mezieres prosecutor confirmed that Mourad had just finished the first year of a science and technology course at university, had been ’reported missing’ by his family on July 25th.

Mourad was the brother-in-law of Cherif Kouachi, who carried out the murders at Charlie Hebdo with his brother Said Kouachi. The pair used AK47s to assassinate writers and cartoonists whom they accused of insulting the Prophet Mohammed, before they themselves were later bumped off by police commandos.

In the hours after the attack, Hamyd’s name was released as a prime suspect and a manhunt was launched. Hamyd handed himself into a cop shoppe in his home town of Charleville-Mezieres, some 160 miles from Gay Paree, and was held and interrogated for more than two days.

After being released without charge, Hamyd said: ’I was stunned, completely overwhelmed by the events.

’I'm in shock, people said horrible and false things about me on social media even though I am a normal student who lives quietly with his parents.’

Kosher market killer Coulibaly buried near Paris
2015-01-24
[IsraelTimes] Authorities say body of terrorist who murdered 4 Jews, policewoman was not accepted by home country Mali

The jihadist gunman who earlier this month murdered four Jews at a Gay Paree kosher shop and held others hostage for hours before being killed by police was buried Friday near the French capital.l.

Police sources said the burial took place after Amedy Coulibaly's country of origin Mali refused to accept his body.

The sources, who wished to remain anonymous, said Coulibaly -- who also shot and killed a policewoman the day before the January 9 attack -- was buried in the Moslem section of the Thiais cemetery in the Gay Paree region.

His family had asked for him to be buried in Mali, but that country's government refused.

The two other jihadists who attacked Gay Paree -- Cherif and Said Kouachi -- were buried last week in the towns where they had lived, respectively Gennevilliers near Gay Paree and Reims in the northeast.

Both were placed in unmarked graves to prevent them becoming "pilgrimage sites" for holy warriors.

Coulibaly had 3 day stay in Spain, alleged arms dealer in Belgium
2015-01-16
[Ynet]. Spanish newspaper says kosher supermarket attacked stayed in Spain with unidentified individual in beginning of January; man in Belgium turns himself in to police saying he had contact with Coulibaly.

Two new developments emerged on Thursday in the investigation into Amedy Coulibaly, the terrorist behind the kosher supermarket attack and the killing of a French policewoman. A Spanish newspaper has reported that Coulibaly spent three days in Madrid in the beginning of January, days before the attack, and in Belgium a man turned himself in to authorities, saying he had been in touch with Coulibaly.

Coulibaly, one of the three perpetrators of the attacks in Gay Paree, stayed in Madrid for three days between December 30 and January 2, according to a report by a Spanish newspaper.

Coulibaly, suspected of killing a police officer on January 8 following which he conducted a bloody hostage-taking in a kosher supermarket in Gay Paree, was in Madrid before the attacks and was accompanied by an individual not yet identified, said the Catalan daily La Vanguardia.

It is already known that Coulibaly's companion Hayat Boumeddiene had passed through Madrid on her way to Turkey. However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
his potential nearly three day stay with her in the capital would be a novelty.

According to the Turkish authorities, the young woman had passed through Madrid and Istanbul and entered Syria on January 8, according to La Vanguardia.

Spanish anti-terrorism agencies are investigating with their French counterparts to determine Coulibaly's activities in Spain and see whether there may be a Madrid support cell.

According to the Spanish authorities, some 70 Islamist fighters from Spain returned from conflict zones to the country in 2014.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Council of Boskone, Helmuth had turned a paler shade of blue. Star-A-Star had struck again...
Belgian authorities have detained a man for arms dealing and are investigating whether he supplied Coulibaly weapons for the attacks, Prosecutors said Thursday.

Belgian media reported that a man had handed himself in to police in the southern city of Charleroi on Tuesday, saying he had been in touch with Coulibaly.

According to the reports, the man said that he swindled Coulibaly in a car sale, but police later found evidence that the two were negotiating about the sale of ammunition for a 7.62 mm caliber firearm.

Bullets of this caliber are needed for the Tokarev pistol that Coulibaly used in his attack on the supermarket in Gay Paree, where he killed four hostages, and possibly in the shooting and injuring of a jogger two days earlier.

"The man is being held by the judge in Charleroi on suspicion of arms dealing," a front man for Belgium's federal prosecution said. "Further investigations will have to show whether there is a link with the events in Gay Paree," he added.

Coulibaly was killed on January 9 in an assault conducted by an elite French unit after he took hostages and killed four Jewish-Frenchie at a Kosher supermarket in a Gay Paree suburb. He acted in coordination, he said, with Cherif and Said Kouachi who killed twelve people in the attack against the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
in Gay Paree.
The Times of Israel adds:
The man, Neetin Farasula, from the airport city of Charleroi in French-speaking southern Belgium, is in detention on suspicion of a possible link to the weapons used in last week’s Islamist assaults in which 17 people were killed, they said.
The article thereafter refers to him as Karasular, suggesting that one of the two is a typo.

paid tribute Tuesday (Jan 13) to the brothers who carried out the murders.

Though small in scale, the event was indicative of the anger that portrayals of the Prophet Mohammed can ignite in some parts of the Moslem world, particularly in Pakistain where tough blasphemy laws make insulting the Prophet a crime punishable by death. Local holy man Maulana Pir Mohammad Chishti led some 60 people in prayers for Cherif and Said Kouachi, who rubbed out 12 people at the magazine's offices on Jan 7, as worshippers called the pair "deaders".

They also chanted "Death to Hebdo publications" and "Long live Cherif Kouachi, long live Said Kouachi", and kissed posters of the brothers who were rubbed out by police two days later. "These two brothers have paid the debt of all Moslems in the world and we present them our salute and respect," Chishti said.

Aurangzeb Alhafi, professor of Islamic Studies at Punjab University in the eastern city of Lahore said he attended the prayers as a religious duty. "If freedom of expression stops at the mention of the Holocaust, then it should also stop at the honour of our Prophet," Alhafi told AFP.

Fourteen people are languishing on death row in Pakistain for falling fall of its blasphemy laws, which rights groups say are used to persecute minorities and wage personal vendettas. Mobs often take matters in their own hands and lynch those accused of blasphemy, and such killers are widely feted.

Charlie Hebdo meanwhile has announced it will defy the attackers by putting a cartoon of a weeping Prophet Mohammed on its next cover.

"When I saw the photo of Said I could recognize him... Six Paris Terror Suspects May Be At Large
2015-01-13
PARIS -- As many as six members of a terrorist cell involved in the Paris attacks may still be at large, including a man who was seen driving a car registered to the widow of one of the gunmen, French police said Monday.

Brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi and their friend, Amedy Coulibaly, were killed Friday by police after a murderous spree at the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket. The three all claimed ties to Islamic extremists in the Middle East. Authorities were searching the Paris area for the Mini Cooper registered to Hayat Boumeddiene, Coulibaly's widow. Turkish officials say she is now in Syria.

One of the police officials said the cell consisted of about 10 members, and that "five or six could still be at large," but he did not provide their names. The other official said the cell was made up of about eight people and included Boumeddiene.

One of the other men believed to be part of the cell has been seen driving Boumeddiene's car around Paris in recent days, the two officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation with the media. They cautioned that it was not clear whether the driver was an operative, involved in logistics, or had some other, less-violent role in the cell.

One of the police officials also said Coulibaly apparently set off a car bomb Thursday in the town of Villejuif, but no one was injured and it did not receive significant media attention at the time.

French police chief committed suicide after Charlie Hebdo attack
2015-01-13
A high-ranking judicial police chief in Limoges committed suicide last Wednesday hours after being asked to file a report on the Charlie Hebdo killings, it has emerged. Helric Fredou, 45, the deputy director of the regional judicial police in Limoges turned his gun on himself last Wednesday night, hours after Cherif and Said Kouachi killed 12 people in an Islamist rampage, including two policemen.

He had been tasked with investigating the family of one of the victims, but died before handing in the report. He had reportedly interviewed families of Charlie Hebdo victims in the hours after the attack.

It is not known if his decision to commit suicide has any link to the Charlie Hebdo killings.

"We are all stunned. He was someone who was very humane and close to people," said Pascal Cayla of the Alliance union.

Colleagues said Mr Fredou had been deeply affected by the suicide of the number three of the Limoges judicial police in 2013 after he discovered the body. His colleague had left a note citing "personal reasons".

This week's Charlie Hebdo to feature more anti-Islam cartoons
2015-01-13
[DAWN] This week's edition of Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
, put together by survivors of last week's newsroom massacre in Gay Paree by Islamist gunnies, will defiantly feature more caricatures targeting Islam.

The special issue, to come out on Wednesday, will also be offered in 16 languages for readers around the world, one of its columnists, Patrick Pelloux, said.

Charlie Hebdo's lawyer, Richard Malka, told French radio the staff will cede nothing to forces of Evil seeking to silence them.

The two gunnies who slaughtered 12 people in their attack on Charlie Hebdo's offices last Wednesday, including five of its top cartoonists and three other staff members, claimed as they left the scene that they had avenged the Prophet Mohammed (PTUI!).

That was a reference to the fury expressed in some Moslem countries over past Mohammed (PTUI!) cartoons which Charlie Hebdo had printed.

The gunnies, brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi, claimed to belong to the jihadist group Al-Qaeda in Yemen.

They were killed on Friday, as was an accomplice claiming affiliation to the rival Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group, Amedy Coulibaly, in separate but coordinated French commando raids on sites in and near Gay Paree where they had taken hostages.

In all 17 people and the three Islamist attackers were killed in three days of violence.

Charlie Hebdo's offices were Molotov cocktailed without casualty in 2011 when it published cartoons targeting the prophet (PTUI!).

The surviving Charlie Hebdo staff have since Friday been working out of the offices of another French newspaper, Liberation, with equipment loaned by other media organizations. Their own blood-soaked offices remain sealed by police, with the entrance covered with flowers, pencils and candles in tribute to the dead.

The 44-year-old newspaper has always sought to break taboos with its provocative cartoons on all religions, current events and prominent personalities.

It had been sliding towards bankruptcy before the attack against it. It used to typically sell only half of the 60,000 copies it printed weekly.

But since gaining worldwide notoriety in the past few days, it has earned pledges of support from the French government and media groups.

One million copies of this week's special survivors' issue are to printed, with many of them to be made available outside of La Belle France.

It will be created only by people from Charlie Hebdo, its financial director, Eric Portheault, told AFP. Offered contributions, notably from cartoonists in La Belle France and other countries, were declined.
