New JI leader from KP raises worries for some
2014-04-07
[Dawn] The election of new chief of Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. may not be a coincidence, as political analysts feel that groundwork for strengthening the party in the militancy infested region had started in 1980s.

The election of KP Senior Minister Sirajul Haq as the new JI chief has created apprehensions among many as the JI leadership shifted from urbanised scholarly figures to a comparatively younger member hailing from a remote district who physically participated in holy war against Soviet forces in Afghanistan in 1980s.

Founded by Syed Abul Ala Maududi, a scholar, theologian and socio-political philosopher in Lahore in 1941, JI was considered as an urban based and educated middle class party having roots in big cities like Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
and Lahore.

Political analysts say that JI -- which was led by Qazi Hussain Ahmad
... third president (1987—2009) of the PakJamaat-e-Islami. Qazi was also head of the Muttahidah Majlis-e-Amal until his ego became bigger than the organization. Qazi is what is known as a fiery preacher, which means he has lots of volume, a good delivery, and not a lot of reverence for coherence. He was the patron of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, Rasool Sayyaf and Osama bin Laden during the war against the Soviets. He used to recommend drinking camel's urine to maintain good health before his kidneys started to go...
who belonged to a small town of Nowshera district for 22 years, more than Maulana Maududi -- has changed the Jamaat from a mainstream party to a regional entity.

Prof Ijaz Khattak, who teaches in University of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
's International Relations Department, says there is a visible change in the character of the JI, which had sufficient vote bank and street power in Karachi and Lahore.

"JI, which was dominated by the urban based educated middle class, has now been confined to a small mountainous district like Lower Dir and has been taken over by Pakhtuns," he observed, adding that feudal class which has its own mentality and thinking has also made inroads in JI.

"It was expected that Syed Munawar Hassan
... The funny-looking leader-for-life of the Pak Jamaat-e-Islami. He joined the National Students Federation (NSF), a lefty student body, and was elected its President in 1959. He came into contact with the Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT) Pakistan and studied the writings of Mawlana Syed Abul Ala Maududi, The Great Apostasizer. As a result, he joined IJT in 1960 and soon he was elected as President of its University of Karachi Unit and member of the Central Executive Council. He was Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistain in 1992-93, and became Secretary General in 1993. After years of holding Qazi's camel he was named Amir when the old man stepped down in 2009...
will galvanise the party in urban areas, but he failed and election of Sirajul Haq strengthened this argument that Jamaat has been restricted to Lower Dir," said Dr Khattak.

Late Qazi Hussain who was elected JI chief in 1987 is considered the longest serving chief of Jamaat who relinquished office in April 2009. He was succeeded by Munawar Hassan.

Insiders said that during his two decades long tenure as Jamaat chief, late Qazi Hussain had relaxed and simplified the process of getting the status of 'Rukn' (member of Jamaat having the vote right). The 'Rukn' can cast vote in the election of emir or chief of the party.

They said that a large number of people from KP and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas were given the status of 'Rukn' of Jamaat during Qazi's era. Initially, they said that it took three to four years for a person to become 'Rukn' of JI.

"There are two factors which played a major role in the victory of Sirajul Haq against Munawar Hassan and Liaquat Baloch, another stalwart of JI from Lahore. First, a significant number of Pakhtuns has become 'Arakeen' or members and second, Mr Haq is more popular among young 'Arakeen' than Mr Hassan and Mr Baloch," said one analyst, who once was active member of Jamaat. He believed that 60 per cent of all the 'Arakeen' were young.

JI provincial information secretary Israrullah advocate said that the number of 'Arakeen' was approximately 31,000 of which about 8,000 belonged to the KP and Fata. Females also have the right to vote.

"This impression is wrong that Pakhtuns have voted for Sirajul Haq," he said and maintained that under the party constitution candidates could neither make a lobby nor run a campaign for themselves.

Another analyst said that Sirajul Haq was a very good orator that was why he was more popular among the JI workers than other leaders.

Mohammad Riaz, Islamabad-based political analyst, said that election of Sirajul Haq was an indication that JI was on the verge of decline both politically and academically as aggressive group had dominated the moderate circle in the party.

Maulana Maududi was a scholar and had command over different subjects, Mr Riaz opined, adding that the late Maulana had formed JI to provide common platform to all school of thoughts.

Before his election Sirajul Haq was senior deputy emir of the party and had also served as provincial chief of JI. He opposes co-education and supports separate assembly for female politicians in the province.

He had also served as head of Islami Jamaat Talba, a student wing of JI. His close associates and rivals said that Sirajul Haq had actively participated in the Afghan war when Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979.

Senator Zahid Khan of Awami National Party associates election of new JI chief with changing geo-strategic scenario across the Durand Line. He said that when Afghan war was at peak Qazi Hussain Ahmad was elected JI chief and he was given a task in Afghanistan.

After five years, he said, another Pakhtun was elected JI emir, which he termed very worrisome. "This is not a coincidence and deliberately another Pakhtun has been elected Jamaat chief at a time when situation is changing in Afghanistan.

"His election is not in the interest of the region," remarked Zahid Khan who also belongs to Lower Dir. He said: "I know Siraj since he was associated with Hizbe-e-Islami chief Gulbadin Hikmatyar whose group is still very active in Kunar province
... which is right down the road from Chitral. Kunar is Haqqani country.....
of Afghanistan." He said that the JI and HI shared same ideology and Jamaat would again play active role in Afghanistan.

JI says it can move court against Sethi

The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. (JI) front man Dr Farid Ahmad Paracha has condemned allegations levelled by veteran journalist Najam Sethi
Publisher of Pak Daily Times, Friday Times, and my hero...
in a private TV programme in which he blamed JI for supporting General Zia ul Haq
...the creepy-looking former dictator of Pakistain. Zia was an Islamic nutball who imposed his nutballery on the rest of the country with the enthusiastic assistance of the nation's religious parties, which are populated by other nutballs. He was appointed Chief of Army Staff in 1976 by Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, whom he hanged when he seized power. His time in office was a period of repression, with hundreds of thousands of political rivals, minorities, and journalists executed or tortured, including senior general officers convicted in coup-d'état plots, who would normally be above the law. As part of his alliance with the religious parties, his government helped run the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan, providing safe havens, American equipiment, Saudi money, and Pak handlers to selected mujaheddin. Zia died along with several of his top generals and admirals and the then United States Ambassador to Pakistain Arnold Lewis Raphel when he was assassinated in a suspicious air crash near Bahawalpur in 1988...
and receiving funds from the ISI.

The JI reserves the right to initiate legal proceedings against the anchorperson, Paracha said.

In a rejoinder issued on Monday, the JI leader said that "so called intellectuals are trying to create unrest and anarchy in the country to fulfil foreign agenda".

He said the JI's struggle for restoration of democracy was a matter of record and it had offered huge sacrifices against dictatorial rule.

Paracha said that Najam Sethi was "out of his senses most of the time" and did not know what he was saying.

He added that it was the Pakistain National Alliance (PNA) and not the JI which had joined Zia ul Haq's government and "therefore blaming JI alone for joining Zia ul Haq is a clear act of dishonesty".

He also pointed out that during Zia ul Haq rule, the JI had suffered the most as the party mayor of Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
was unlawfully removed and JI student's wing, Islami Jamait-e-Talaba, was penalised the most.

Paracha said that the JI had repeatedly denied having receiving funds from the ISI. He said Najam Sethi's allegations that former JI leader Qazi Hussain Ahmad
... third president (1987--2009) of the PakJamaat-e-Islami. He used to recommend drinking camel's urine to maintain good health before his kidneys started to go...
had confessed to receiving ISI funds were "frivolous and concocted".

"In fact, Qazi sahib himself had filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging this allegation."

He said the JI had challenged political parties to produce any proof in this regard but no such evidence was ever produced before the court.

here, he urged the government and the army to take the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain's talks offer seriously and initiate a dialogue to ensure a peaceful atmosphere during the general election.

But contrary to the statement by Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, a front man for JUI-F, Abdul Jalil Jan, told Dawn in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. that Maulana Fazl had gone abroad on a private visit.

According to the western media, the US is in contact with the Taliban in Qatar to persuade the turban group to initiate negotiations with the Afghan government as Washington prepares for the withdrawal of its troops from Afghanistan in 2014.

Hafiz Hussain did not disclose on whose behalf Mr Rehman had gone to Doha.

However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
he said the JUI-F was playing a pivotal role in the grinding of the peace processor and the maulana was in Qatar to advance the process.

He said the use of force was no solution to the conflict between the Taliban and the military and urged them to sit on the negotiating table to restore peace in the region.

The Jamaat's deputy Amir, Sirajul Haq, said the government was looking towards the US for a signal after the negotiation offer by the Taliban. "The government is not sincere in peace negotiations and is waiting for dictation from Americans."

He said if the US could hold talks with the Taliban why Pakistain could not do so.

Nuggets From The Urdu Press
2013-01-27
These nuggets are culled from the Urdu press. They are summarised here without comment. Absurd or ridiculous, tft takes no responsibility for them
In which a blockbuster is sold, women are paid, a handsome bribe fails...and the Imran factor is declared dead. Sing loudly hosannas, dear Reader, for all that is good on this final Sunday in January.
Orya Maqbul Jan on democracy
Writing in Dunya famous columnist and intellectual Orya Maqbul Jan said that interest-based economy and democracy were two evils that looked pretty on surface but were ugly in essence. Their exterior was magical but their interior was blood-stained, savage and disgusting. They rode together and could not last without each other's help. The media, which is the bought slave of these two wolves, presents itself as a sheep to the nation but in fact it was a Dracula clad in fine attire. The people became ensnared in their magic and fell victim to their bloody fangs. Under democracy the evil of trickle-down effect spread by capitalism fills the coffers of the rich who are then supposed to throw some crumbs to the populace.
Sounds like a blockbuster film proposal -- but we definitely want a Marianne type to play Democracie.
Tahirul Qadri bribed women with Rs 2,000 each
Quoted in Dunya Sajid Mir leader of Markazi Jamaat Ahle Hadith stated that Tahirul Qadri was put forward as a pawn by the US and UK while the military and the establishment were trying to damage the political base of Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
in Punjab. His long marchers were propelled by bribe. He gave Rs 2,000 each to all women who attended his rally in Lahore. He added that MQM and PMLQ were also filling Qadri's treasury with their funds so that he can go on disrupting politics. After the death of 'Imran factor' Qadri was the new pawn placed in the field of politics.

Tahirul Qadri enemy of democracy
Quoted in Jang Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan stated that Qadri had entered Pakistain as an enemy of democracy. Fazlur Rehman of JUIF said that Qadri was a doctor who had come to cut up the belly of democracy but he (Fazl) will not allow him to do that.

Story of two Tahirs
Writing in Dunya Nazeer Naji stated that once adviser to governor Punjab under Musharraf, Allama Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi went to see his namesake Allama Tahirul Qadri to tell him that General Musharraf looked at Qadri with kindness after receiving a gracious letter of extreme unction from Allama Dr Qadri. The meeting was most propitious because when Ashrafi came to his car his drivers had received expensive cloth for their suits and large bundle of gifts for Ashrafi had already been placed in his car. After this, letters were exchanged between Musharraf and Qadri but after some time Musharraf turned his attention elsewhere, whereupon Qadri wrote to him saying he would not mind becoming head of the Council of Islamic Ideology. But Musharraf did not show any reaction.

Qazi Hussain Ahmad great man
Columnist and anchor Hamid Mir wrote in Jang that Qazi Hussain Ahmad
... third president (1987--2009) of the PakJamaat-e-Islami. He used to recommend drinking camel's urine to maintain good health before his kidneys started to go...
was the greatest Jamaat Islami leader after Maulana Maududi. His moderation was so touching that journalist Suhail Warraich, who was critical of Jamaat, got Qazi Hussain Ahmad to solemnize his marriage. After Musharraf fired Nawaz Sharif's government, he called on Qazi to join him but Qazi was not forthcoming with enthusiasm. In 2001 Hamid Mir went to Tehran with Qazi and met Hekmatyar who was then staying there. Qazi was critical of Hekmatyar who defended himself with deference. Qazi told him that it was wrong to start infighting among mujahideen and it was important to reach out to Northern Alliance. Qazi declined to become chief of the Jamaat for the fourth time in 2008.

What is Minhajul Koran?
Daily Jang published a profile of Tahirul Qadri's organization Minhajul Koran saying Tahirul Qadri and six of his family controlled it. Out of the Board of Directors three were approached but they were not aware they were members of the Board. Justice (Retd) Sheikh Riaz Hussain said he was a member a long time ago and Prof Humayun Ehsan said he did not know that he was on the Board. MNA Farooq Amjad Mir of Tehrik Insaf said he had resigned from the Board of Minhaj but did not know he was still a member. Qadri's two sons Hasan and Husain Muhiuddin hold important offices in Minhaj. Muhiuddin was the name of the famous mystic Abdul Qadir Jilani.

CM Hoti and fourth marriage
Reported in Dunya Chief Minister Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
Amir Azam Hoti had married his fourth wife Humaira without the permission of his third wife Shamim Kayani
... four star general, current Chief of Army Staff of the Mighty Pak Army. Kayani is the former Director General of ISI...
who had demanded payment of Rs 11 crore. In one court Hoti had pledged to pay Rs 11 crore to Shamim Kayani and give her a house in Islamabad in six months while in another court he had denied that he was married to her. Meanwhile Shamim Kayani has told the court that she fears for her life.

Hameed Gul says India about to fall
Reported in Dunya an organization called Kashmire Liberation Front was demonstrating in front of the Islamabad Press Club demanding liberation of Kashmire from India and its revival as a sovereign state. During the demonstration retired ISI boss Hameed Gul passed by, at which the protesters raised slogans against Pakistain too. Hameed Gul went into the crowd and advised them to raise the slogan of joining Pakistain because India was about to fall.

Only relationship with India: enmity!
Daily Dunya reported that retired generals of Pakistain army said rude things about India. Aslam Beg
...occasionally incoherent retired four-star general who was the Chief of Army Staff of the Mighty Pak Army, succeeding the creepy General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, after the latter was rubbed out died in an air crash in 1988. The general was involved up to his hairy ears in the Mehran bank scandal, shuffling millions in public money to buy or lease politicians, and is believed one of the prime movers in the sale of Pak nuclear technology to Iran. He ranks second only to Hamid Gul in the volume and flavor of his anti-Western vitriol..
said if India was feeling indisposed then Pakistain had the right medicine for her cure (tabiyat theek kar dain gai). The generals said India had two sets of teeth, one for showing and one for eating and that it had not accepted Pakistain as a state. Mirza Aslam Beg said India was shooting our soldiers across the border while some Paks were doing japhian (embraces) of amn ki asha (hope for peace) with Indians. He said Pakistain could accept not India as a Most Favoured Nation because India still had to decide the issue of Kashmire. Hameed Gul said the only rishta (relationship) with India was that of enmity.

PMLQ richest, PPP poorest!
Reported in Jang the Election Commission made public the funds notified by the political parties. PMLQ was the richest with 5 crore in the bank, the PPP poorest with only Rs 4 lakh. PMLN had Rs 3 crore, MQM and Insaf had one crore each.

Balochistan as two-nation province
Quoted in Dunya leader of Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party Mehmood Khan Achakzai stated that Pakistain must accept the prior right of the Baloch over all natural resources of Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
. He said the Balochistan issue would be resolved when the existence of two nations - Baloch and Pashtun - was accepted there through a constitutional arrangement. He said the chief minister's post should alternate between the two nations.

Leftist Pervaiz Rasheed and the Quaid
Writing in Dunya famous columnist Haroon Rasheed stated that Senator Pervaiz Rasheed of PMLN was an old leftist who had found a niche in Nawaz Sharif's party while forgetting that Moslem League is a party of Quaid-e-Azam whom he never quotes. He was pulling the PMLN in the direction of liberal-leftists while more loyal Moslem Leaguers like Raja Zafrul Haq had receded to the background. Now the latest lesson Pervaiz Rasheed had taught Nawaz Sharif was that he should get the old leftists on board to benefit from their strength. When the traditional voters of PMLN discover that the party has compromised on its fundamental values they will stop supporting it.

Earlier, addressing the condolence reference the JUI-F chief blamed external forces for ongoing wave of sectarianism in the country. He said that big powers were fuelling sectarianism to weaken Moslems.

The country's security agencies despite spending the taxpayers' money had failed to contain foreign interference in the country, he added.

He said that Pakistain was at the crossroads and people were killed on linguistic, sectarian and ethnic grounds. Political parties have to play their role to stop violence, he said and added that aggrandisement of Islam was their joint goal and they should

He paid tribute to late Qazi Hussain Ahmad who struggled for rule of law and democracy throughout his life.

He said that unity among Moslems was Qazi Sahab's top priority and for this purpose Milli Yakjehti Council and Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal were formed.

Federal minister Ghulam Ahmad Bilour, Pakistain Moslem League (likeminded) president Senator Saleem Saifullah Khan, former Afghan prime minister Gulbadin Hekmatyar' aide Engineer Ghairat Baheer and others also addressed the reference.

JI's central general secretary Liaquat Bloch said that the death of Qazi Hussain Ahmad was a major loss for the Islamic

He said that the leader fought against dictatorship and served the cause of democracy.

He said that the country could not afford any type of adventurism or unconstitutional act and demanded free and fair election.

He said that honest people should be inducted in the caretaker setup for conducting elections. He urged religious parties to contest next general election from a JUI-F's no to APC Fazl blames ANP for promoting violence joint platform to defeat secular forces.

"Qazi Hussain Ahmad struggled for enforcement of Shariah in the country and played an important role in formation of political alliances to steer the country out of crisis," said Javed Khan Swati, a PTI leader while speaking at a reference held here on Sunday.

Representatives of almost all political parties, labour unions, lawyers and journalists spoke on the occasion.

"Pakistain has been deprived of a seasoned religious scholar who laid the foundation of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal to brig people of different sects on a single platform," said JI leader Tariq Sherazi.

Besides others, traders body president Haroonur Rasheed, transport union's secretary general Pervez Khan and teachers association's president of Khalid Zaman also spoke on the occasion.

on Tuesday said Pak Taliban should be allowed to open an office in the country to clear their position on acts of terrorism.

Mr Qazi told news hounds after a public meeting here that if the US could allow Afghan Taliban to set up an office in Qatar, then the Pakistain should give the same facility to local Taliban on its soil.

"In my personal opinion, Pak Taliban should have a proper office in the country as it will help the world learn about their stand on acts of terrorism taking place in Pakistain or abroad," he said.

The ex-JI chief said the US was holding peace talks with Afghan Taliban, Hizb-e-Islami and other groups but ironically, Pakistain was not allowed to hold dialogue with Pak Taliban.

He said the lasting peace in the region could be ensured by the withdrawal of the US and NATO

forces from Afghanistan.

Mr Qazi blamed the US presence in Afghanistan for acts of terrorism in Pakistain. He said if the government wanted peace, then it should stop following the pro-US policies.

The ex-JI chief said his party was trying to force the government to hold general elections on time and that it wouldn't support any attempt to delay the imminent polls.

In Swari area of Buner, provincial JI chief Professor Mohammad Ibrahim on Tuesday addressed a party meeting and said the current rulers were pursuing the US agenda in the garb of anti-terror war whose sufferers were innocent people.

Mr Ibrahim said his party believed in adherence to the Constitution and would come to power through democratic process. He said JI was striving for the enforcement of Islamic law in the country.

The JI leader urged the party workers to prepare for the imminent elections.

JI district chief Mohammad Hanif and religious scholar Dr Fazali Azeem also spoke on the occasion.

Imtiaz Alam challenges state
Quoted on the front page of Jinnah secretary general of South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA) Imtiaz Alam stated that unless the state is able to protect the lives of citizens under democracy it will lead to a military takeover. Responding to an earlier statement by President Zardari, he said that no president ever admits lack of state capacity to defend citizens. If conditions will improve by saying that we are not a part of America's war then declare it openly. All religious parties and jihadis should come out in the open and elect Mullah Umar as their leader and put their programme in front of the nation. But if they can't do that then they should not kill innocent Mohammedans in the streets. The state should never openly admit defeat. He said a large army was built in order defend the people of Pakistain. He said today if the MQM was scared of the Taliban then the others will simply surrender (kis bagh ki mooli).

had asked a Habib Bank officer Younis Habib that he arrange a large sum for bribing IJI in 1990. Younis Habib deposited Rs 14 crore with ISI and MI which was distributed by General Durrani. The incident of 9/11 was staged by the Jews to make America attack the world of Islam. But some Arab countries still had remnants of ghairat (honour) in them because after some years they staged what is called Arab Spring although in Pakistain nothing of the sort happened because it had no honour. The Arabs had simple guns but in their heart was great emotion (walwala). In Pakistain a leader (Musharraf?) started selling Paks to America because bay-ghairati was common in Pakistain.

Drones behind Malala tragedy!
Drones are the answer to every question, dear Reader.
Writing in Dunya Rauf Klasra stated that some TV anchors and columnists were busy connecting the attack on Malala to America and to the rise of cursed secularism in Pakistain.
This is the other answer to all questions, unless it is the Dread Hinjoos or Mossad.
Some commentators have raised the cry that after the attempt on Malala it had become more urgent to start talking to the Taliban. What kind talks can we hold with the Taliban? Should we concede if they demand that Pakistain be handed over to them just as Swat

She attacked a warlord in parliament and was thrown out by Afghan parliament. Under attack, she finally left Afghanistan and had recently published a book about warlordism.

Greater Taliban alliance

"The objectives of Pakistain's establishment have not been achieved. The regimes who ruled the country one after the other are responsible for pushing the country into the prevailing quagmire," he said.
