Day 2: Armed man holding hostages at Colleyville, Texas, synagogue demands release of convicted terrorist 'sister'. He's dead now
2022-01-16
See Day 1 reports here and here. Also discussed yesterday here and here (including a link to audio of the jihadi, so you can judge his accent for yourself, dear Reader)
[NYPOST] An angry, apparently armed man took a rabbi and his congregants hostage at a Texas synagogue Saturday — demanding US authorities release an infamous convicted terrorist known as "Lady al-Qaeda" and even calling a New York rabbi in a bizarre bid for help, according to sources and reports.

The unnamed assailant was initially misidentified as Muhammad Siddiqui, the brother of Pak neuroscientist Aafia Siddiqui
...American-educated Pak cognitive neuroscientist who was convicted of assault with intent to murder her U.S. interrogators in Afghanistan. In September 2010, she was sentenced to 86 years in jug after a three-ring trial. Siddiqui, using the alias Fahrem or Feriel Shahin, was one of six alleged al-Qaeda members who bought $19 million worth of blood diamonds in Liberia immediately prior to 9-11-01. Since her incarceration Paks have taken her to their heart and periodically erupt into demonstrations, while the government tries to find somebody to swap for her...
, who was convicted in Manhattan Federal Court in 2010 of trying to kill US authorities in Afghanistan. She is currently serving an 86-year prison sentence at the Federal Medical Center, Carswell in nearby Fort Worth, according to public records.

A rep for Muhammad Siddiqui later claimed he had nothing to do with the incident, even though the man who stormed Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville claimed to be Aafia Siddiqui’s brother, according to the Daily Beast.

At some point, the hostage taker — who was caught on the synagogue’s livestream angrily ranting about religion — forced Congregation Beth Israel Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker to place a call to Manhattan’s Central Synagogue, a law enforcement source told The Post.

The man demanded to speak to Rabbi Angela Buchdahl, and asked her to use her "influence" to help get Siddiqui released before claiming to have a bomb, the source said.

Buchdahl called 911, the source said. It’s unclear what connection, if any, the 49-year-old Buchdahl has to the Siddiqui case.

Siddiqui is serving an 86-year prison sentence in nearby Fort-Worth, according to public records.

The incident unfolded just after 10:30 a.m. Texas time, according to the Colleyville Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The live stream had 8,000 viewers before it was cut off at 2 p.m.; during the broadcast, the man could be heard saying, "If anyone tries to enter this building, I’m tellin you ... everyone will die," and could be heard repeating, "I’m going to die. Don’t cry about me," according to the Jerusalem Post.

Police in Colleyville, a community near Dallas-Fort Worth, dispatched a SWAT team to the residential neighborhood surrounding the temple. They warned residents to stay away from the immediate area, according to social media and a tweet by Colleyville police.

The angry man can be heard ranting about religion on the ongoing livestream, the Fort Worth Telegram reported. However,
denial ain't just a river in Egypt...
the video did not show what is taking place in the temple, and it was unclear how many people were in the synagogue, the newspaper reported.

On social media, many were offering prayers for Cytron-Walker, leader of the Reform Jewish congregation that was established in 1999, according to its Facebook page.

The feds claimed the MIT-trained Aafia Siddiqui was an al Qaeda associate when she was arrested in 2008 carrying handwritten plans for a radioactive "dirty bomb," along with a list of New York landmarks.

FBI says no ongoing threat after hostages released

[IsraelTimes] After the hostage situation concluded with the release of all four people who were held at Congregation Beth Israel, a representative for the FBI
...Formerly one of the world's premier criminal investigation organizations, something for a nation to be proud of. Now it's a political arm of the Deep State oligarchy that is willing to trump up charges, suppress evidence, or take out insurance policies come election time...
says there is no ongoing threat.

"I do not have any information right now that indicates that this is part of any kind of ongoing threat," says Matthew Desarno, the special agent in charge of FBI Dallas during a briefing with news hounds at a press staging area a quarter of a mile from the synagogue.

"We obviously are investigating, and will continue to investigate," he says, noting that the area remains an active scene of the crime.

Over 200 law enforcement officers were involved in the hostage situation throughout the day, including a special hostage rescue team of 60 to 70 members who flew in from Washington, DC.

The hostage rescue team breached the synagogue at around 9 p.m., Colleyville Police Chief Mike Miller says.

All of the hostages were adults, he adds.

Area residents who were evacuated from the neighborhood are still not allowed to return home, since the area is an active scene of the crime, a police representative told The Times of Israel.

In recording, hostage taker appears to say synagogue allowed him inside

[IsraelTimes] The hostage taker at a Texas synagogue can apparently be heard saying in a live video from the synagogue that congregants let him into the building.

The synagogue was live streaming a service on Facebook when the incident began and broadcast the first few hours of the crisis.

Facebook removed the video, but in segments that have been posted online, the attacker can be heard speaking, although much of what he says in unintelligible.

At one point, he says "They let me in. I said ’Is this a night shelter?’ and they let me in and they gave me a cup of tea so I do feel bad."

"I like the rabbi, he’s a good guy, I bonded with him, I really like him... I’ve only been here for a couple hours but I can see he’s a good guy," the attacker says.

Authorities in hours-long standoff at Colleyville synagogue, no injuries reported
2022-01-15
See also the Ft Worth Star-Telegram’s report here, courtesy of Bubba Lover of the Faeries8843.
[Dallas Morning News] COLLEYVILLE — Authorities were negotiating Saturday afternoon with a man who appeared to have taken hostages inside a synagogue.

It’s unclear how many people are inside the building or whether anyone is armed, Colleyville Police Sgt. Dara Nelson said. No injuries have been reported, she said.

Police said on Twitter around 11:30 a.m. that they were "conducting SWAT operations" in the 6100 block of Pleasant Run Road, the site of Congregation Beth Israel. The situation was ongoing as of 4:30 p.m.

All residents in the immediate area were being evacuated, and police asked people to avoid the area.

Nelson said negotiators made contact with somebody inside the synagogue who they believe is a suspect. Authorities don’t believe there is a threat to the general public.

Nelson said "we know there’s a subject inside and other people inside with him," but stopped short of describing it as a hostage situation.
Update at 7:35 p.m.:
Shortly after 5 p.m., authorities were seen bringing a man wearing a robe and a black yarmulke out of the building.

The Council on American Islamic Relation further condemned Saturday’s incident. Edward Ahmed Mitchell, the organization’s national deputy director, called the situation “an unacceptable act of evil” and said “no cause can justify or excuse this crime.”

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said Dallas police would have additional patrols at synagogues and other sites in the city, adding that officials were working with the Jewish Federation to monitor any threats.

Police in New York and Los Angeles also were increasing patrols at synagogues.

In the past, CAIR has called for Siddiqui’s release, with the executive director of CAIR-Dallas, Faizan Syed, saying in November that her sentence was unjust.

Siddiqui’s lawyer, Marwa Elbially, called her “one of the greatest victims of the so-called ‘war on terror’ kidnapping program that saw hundreds of innocent people kidnapped and held in U.S.-funded detention around the world.”

CAIR issued a statement with an attorney representing Siddiqui’s brother’s that said the person inside the synagogue was not related to Siddiqui and called for him to surrender.

“This assailant has nothing to do with Dr. Aafia, her family or the global campaign to get justice for Dr. Aafia,” John Floyd, the organization’s board chair, said in a written statement. “We want the assailant to know that his actions are wicked and directly undermine those of us who are seeking justice for Dr. Aafia.”

Other sources updating at 7:35 p.m. ET:
CNN is liveblogging here. Latest:
The suspect in the Texas synagogue hostage situation spoke with a New York City rabbi today
The FBI interviewed a New York City-based rabbi who spoke to the suspect in the Texas synagogue hostage situation earlier today.

The rabbi of Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, Texas — who is among the four people being held hostage — called the rabbi in New York City at the request of the hostage taker.

She is a well-known rabbi who has no connection to the hostage taker. According to the official, the hostage taker told the rabbi that Aafia Siddiqui was framed and that they want her released.

The Post Millennial adds:
UPDATE 6:10 p.m. EST: Lawyer confirms Aafia Siddiqui's brother is not the suspect inside the Synagogue.

The Daily Mail is also following the story, and names the brother as Muhammad Siddiqui, who is listed as an architect in Houston.

2 elderly men killed, 1 boy wounded in 'unprovoked' cross-LoC attack by Indian forces
2019-08-19
[DAWN] At least two persons were killed and one young boy was maimed in two sectors of Azad Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
(AJK) in "unprovoked" Indian firing on Sunday, officials said.

The deaths occurred in Battal sector in Poonch district while the boy was maimed in Abbaspur sector of the same district which has been facing cross Line of Control (LoC) shelling for the past several days.

"Today the shelling began at 6:30pm and continued for two hours without any pause. However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
it is intermittent at the moment," a police official based in Battal told Dawn at 10pm, but declined to be identified.

He said one of the shells landed close to the venue of the wedding of one, Muhammad Aqeel, son of Muhammad Siddique Bhatti in Darra Sher Khan village.

Splinters of a shell pierced the groom’s 60-year-old uncle, Hassan Din aka Balochi, who had come all the way from Dadyal tehsil of Mirpur district to attend the ceremony.

Apart from him, 63-year-old Lal Din, son of Muhammad Din, a resident of Darra Sher Khan village, was also hit by the splinters.

Both went titzup, the official said.

In Abbaspur sector of Poonch district, Saddam Noor, a seven-year-old boy, was critically injured after he an Indian sniper hit him in the head from across the nearby LoC.

The boy was rushed to CMH Rawalakot at death's door, an official said.

"Heavy firing is going on and its thunder is making all the residents restless," said local journalist Saira Yousuf Chughtai at 10:40pm

Bail granted to 11 JD activists
2009-09-04
[The News (Pak)] A division bench of the Lahore High Court on Wednesday granted bail to 11 activists of the Jamaatud Dawa, who were in jail since the UN imposed sanctions on the JD. Abdul Shakoor, Muhammad Hanif and others were arrested from Bahawalnagar under anti-terrorism act.
But a bit of time's gone by, attention spans have waned, and they can be safely sprung now.
During the course of hearing, Deputy Prosecutor General Chaudhry Jamshed argued that the JD was a banned organisation but its activists continued collecting funds, distributing religious literature and doing other activities.
Such as recruiting for Lashkar-e-Taiba and global jihad...
At this, accused-petitioner's counsel Irshadullah Chatta stated that there was no notification regarding the ban on JD. He argued that an organisation could not be banned until a notification under Section 11 B was issued.
The gummint, naturally, hasn't gotten around to doing that...
He said the government had already admitted in the Hafiz Saeed case that it had no substantial evidence against the Jamaatud Dawa. The bench comprising Chief Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif and Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry after hearing the arguments granted them bail against surety bonds of Rs 100,000 each. The released JD activists included Muhammad Siddiq, Abbas Dogar, Saeed Amir, Arif Ali, Muhammad Akram, Dr. Muhammad Iqbal, Master Abdul Shakoor and Muhammad Anwar.

Forces clear Khyber, Tirah is next
2008-06-30
BARA: Soldiers backed by armoured vehicles retook control of Bara town in the Khyber Agency on Sunday, and prepared to advance to other areas in the district, including the Tirah Valley.
Looks like someone loaned the Frontier Corps a backbone ...
It is pretty much out of character, isn't it? It couldn't possibly be that it's all for show?
An official said that Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) chief Mangal Bagh had fled run away moved to the remote Tirah Valley before the launch of the government’s offensive, Reuters reported.
Not that anybody called him and suggested he get out of Dodge until the 'operation' was over so that no one, including him and the caller, would get hurt...
I think it was the opposite: Mangal directed the show and conveniently absented himself stage left ...
The second day of the NWFP government’s operation against militancy ended without any resistance, as the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) troops continued their advance into the tribal region near Peshawar.
In Bara, the situation was completely calm, as Bagh had directed his supporters against fighting government forces.
Right. They saw the Mighty Pak Frontier Corps coming and they beat feet.
In Bara, the situation was completely calm, as Bagh had directed his supporters against fighting government forces. “We’re peaceful farmers and giving way to the security forces; we are not going to fight,” said Mangal Bagh’s 16-year-old son Tayeb while standing near the debris of his razed house. He told Daily Times that around 200 security personnel had demolished his family’s home with bombs.
Wonder if he lost his cricket card collection ...
Local official Muhammad Siddiq Khan said the FC had also encountered no resistance as it moved into areas outside Bara, AP reported. An AFP photographer said that troops had setup sandbag checkpoints after retaking control of Bara.
Question is, how long will they stay, and what will they do when the Talibs and LI begin to snipe at them ...
They won't be there long enough to get sniped at, unless there are Shias among them.
In that case get ready for an earth-shattering kaboom ...
Muhammad Ilyas, a bodyguard of Mangal Bagh, confirmed that the LI forces had been strictly directed against fighting government troops by “amir sahib”.

During the operation’s second day, security forces razed several buildings, including the Mehboob Markaz, the Tayab, Misri and Gud Malang centres and a private jail. A security official told AFP that soldiers also blew up a building belonging to the Taliban-linked group Ansarul Islam (AI).

However, FATA Additional Secretary Habibullah Khan declined to comment on the target of the operation. “This operation is not against a particular individual or group,” he told reporters when asked if the operation was targeting Mangal Bagh and the LI. He said that no one would be allowed to run a parallel government.

The 5,000-troop contingent of FC soldiers that launched the operation on Saturday was supplemented with a fresh deployment of 400 troops and 20 vehicles on Sunday.
There are sixty thousand regular Pak army troops garrisoned in Peshawar. They haven't moved an inch.
If India attacks Peshawar, though, they're ready.

People resent Lal Masjid cleric's attempt to flee in burqa
2007-07-06
Many people said on Thursday that they resented Lal Masjid chief cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz’s attempt to escape in a burqa, terming it a disgrace to ulema. Outraged citizens demanded that the government try the Lal Masjid chief in a court and punish him for the killings of innocent people and for bringing untold miseries to many families. Maulana Abdul Aziz was arrested on Wednesday while attempting to escape security forces around the mosque in a burqa.

“He should have fought till the end and died to prove what he did was right,” said Gohar Ali, a young banker, during a survey conducted by Daily Times.

Raees Khan, a public transport driver, said the Lal Masjid incident and the chief cleric’s act had maligned the image of ulema held in high esteem by society. “This man must be tried in a court as he has brought our religion into disrepute,” said Khan.

Advocate Eissa Khan said it was a drama staged by the government to justify the army’s further stay in power. “Rulers want to tell the West and America that terrorist elements have reached Islamabad and only the army can handle them,” he said.

Muhammad Siddiq, owner of a grocery store, said the way Maulana Aziz tried to escape, and that too in a burqa, indicated it was all a drama. “Had the Maulana been sincere he would have preferred death to earn a name and not have run like he did,” said the grocer.

A retired government official, requesting anonymity said the Lal Masjid incident was aimed at sabotaging the proposed All Parties Conference (APC) taking place in London from July 7. “It seems to me the Lal Masjid incident was nothing more than a political game to achieve certain objectives,” he said.

“How come Lal Masjid clerics and students had latest weapons?” asked Ibrahim, an auto mechanic. He said that if the mosque’s chief cleric had been on the right path he would have resisted till death.

Samad, an accountant, said the Lal Masjid ulema used innocent children as a shield. “From now on no one will send their children to madrassas, as people have lost confidence in ulema,” said Samad.

Awami National Party (ANP) leader advocate Nasir Khan said, “Rulers want to give a message to the European Union and America that terrorists have reached Islamabad and it’s only the army that is capable of quashing them.”

'DI Khan bomber was 16 or 17, spoke Pushto'
2007-02-03
A policeman injured in Monday’s suicide bombing in DI Khan has said the attacker spoke Pushto, had a fair complexion and was wearing a black shawl. Muhammad Siddiq, who led the police party, said that 10 minutes before a Muharram procession was scheduled to begin, he saw a 16 or 17 year old boy running towards Topanwala Chowk.

Constable Abdul Halim asked the bomber to stop so that he could be searched, he said, but the boy refused to remove his shawl. When Halim tried to remove it himself, the boy blew himself up, said Siddiq, who has been admitted to DI Khan Headquarters Hospital. Nasir, a passer by, also died in the attack. ASP Captain Hamad told Daily Times that police had begun an investigation and sent the suicide bomber’s legs to Islamabad for a DNA test.

He said DI Khan police arrested six suspects (including Amirullah, Bashir, Mohammad Jan, Ateeq and Abdullah) with the help of law-enforcement agencies on Monday, and seized explosives belts, weapons, mobile phones and hand grenades. The suspects, he said, had been shifted to Islamabad for interrogation. Frontier Police Additional IG Fayyaz Toro has said significant progress had been made in the investigations of Saturday’s Peshawar bombing, adding that the culprits would be arrested soon.

Police sources said several suspects had been arrested and were being interrogated. They did not identify the suspects. Security agencies have seized two grenades and a detonator during a search of the bombing site. Peshawar Police Chief Abdul Majeed Marwat said the explosives used in the blast weighed two to two-and-a-half kilogrammes and the attacker also had two hand bombs.

India diverts flooded river towards Pakistan territory
2006-06-28
This seems like BS from the Paks. The dam experts here can say whether this is even remotely possible.

NOOR KOT: In a bid to escape the disaster of possible floods, India has diverted one of its flooded river aided by a solid built dam.

The situation is posing grave dangers to such borderline area of Pakistan as the rural villages and regions of Jalala, Ratoojak Jainder, Bhaat, and Warriach. etc, which are in danger of being flooded sooner or later.

The valuable agrarian lands of Pakistan are in danger as floods are slowly and gradually inching towards them, and it would only be a matter of couple of days before they devastate the fertile Pakistani territory.

This apprehension was expressed while talking to "Online" by rural notables, which included nazim of Ikhlas Abad, Chaudhry Muhammad Hayat, Baba Muhammad Siddiqui, Jamshed Iqbal, Khizar Hayat Chaudhry, Muneeb Hayat Chaudhry and other residents of these rural regions.

They have strongly urged construction of dams in these regions to protect borderline areas from imminent flooding, and expressed insecurity due to the fact that dams were quite insecure unless they were adequately supported by embankments. Currently only 1400 feet of stone embankment is being raised at Jalala flood dam, while the remaining part is being left open and vulnerable.

They said that during previous year, the floods were only 720 feet away from the dam, whereas this time they are literally touching the dam. Similarly the water levels of nullahs Auj and Tarnao, both of which originate in IOK and curving from the front of Jalala turn back to IOK before merging in river Rawal are also increasing.

They said that during a previous flooding, which occurred at the toochak Jainder region situated on the banks of this Nullah route, due to weak structures , caused heavy damages both in human and crops including plenty of domestic animals.
