Banned jihadi group give lecture at University of Peshawar
2012-02-26
Activists of a banned jihadi group gave a lecture on the campus of University of Peshawar (UoP) on Friday even though the university`s rules do not allow such gatherings. A student who listened to the sermons said, "Two persons delivered speeches outside Madina Mosque in the university to a group of about 60 people. Their speeches centered on efforts to invite people towards jihad."

The visit by leaders of the Bahawalpur-based banned jihadi outfit was part of the group`s membership drive, he said, adding that about 30 people filled out membership forms after the anti-US speeches by Maulana Mufti Abdur Rehman and Hifzullah.

The day before, posters were posted in the campus asking students to attend the lecture by activists of the group, led by Maulana Mohammad Masood Azhar, but the administration failed to take any action and ban their entry to the campus.

Both of the leaders blamed the US and its allies for Pakistan's problems and called on students to stand up against what they called the anti-Islamic forces and foil their attempts to subdue Muslims, a witness quoted the activists as saying.

They also distributed literature. One leaflet said that the group was working to turn Islamic teachings into actions, serve the people and Islam by spreading knowledge of the religion so that people could understand true Islam and its enemies.

Hafiz Saeed's house arrest extended by two months
2009-03-10
The Lahore High Court (LHC) extended the house arrest of Hafiz Saeed, head of banned outfit Jamaat-Ud-Dawa and four others by 60 days on Monday. Hafiz Saeed was presented before the review board of the LHC along with his four aides under high security. The Punjab government pleaded the court to extend the house arrests of banned outfit leaders. However, Saeed's counsel Zafar Iqbal opposed the government's request. The judicial review board of the LHC, comprising three judges, extended the house arrest of Hafiz Saeed and three of his key aides, Haji Amir Hamza, Col (retd) Nazir Ahmed and Mufti Abdur Rehman by 60 days. However, they did not accede to the authorities'' request to prolong the house arrest of two other JuD leaders, Qazi Kashif Niaz and Qari Yasin Baloch, as well and ordered that they be freed.

Pakistain: 124 held in crackdown over Mumbai terrorist attacks
2009-01-17
(AKI/DAWN) - Pakistan has bowed to international pressure and arrested at 124 militants suspected of involvement in the deadly terrorist attacks on the Indian city of Mumbai last November, including several of their leaders and officials.

The government on Thursday said it had closed five training camps and 20 offices belonging to banned charity Jamaat-ud-Dawa and the outlawed Kashmiri separatist group, Lashkar-e-Toiba. It also announced it had banned their seven publications and blocked all their websites.

India holds LeT responsible for the Mumbai attacks and Jamaat-ud-Dawa is widely believed to be a LeT front organisation.

Addressing a news conference, the Pakistani prime minister's adviser on interior affairs, Rehman Malik, assured India that Pakistan would do its utmost to bring the people involved in the Mumbai attacks to justice. Unveiling details of a massive crackdown, Malik said that training camps had been closed down in Punjab and in Azad Kashmir.

Assuring India that sincere efforts were being made to bring to justice all the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks, Malik urged New Delhi to provide Pakistani investigators with access to the scenes of the attacks and to jointly investigate the incident so that all those involved could be brought to justice.

He announced the formation of a special investigation team headed by an additional director-general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to examine, "without any prejudice", all aspects of the Mumbai attacks and the information provided by India. The team will include two officers with counter-terrorism experience.

"Information has been provided by India and we have formed an investigation team to reach the culprits," he said.

Malik said the members of the banned organisations who had been detained included their founder Hafiz Mohammed Saeed, LeT 'operations commander' Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, Mufti Abdur Rehman, Col (retd) Nazir Ahmed and Ameer Hamza.

"We have arrested a total of 124 mid-level and top leaders of Jamaat-ud-Dawa in response to a UN resolution - 69 from Punjab, 21 from Sindh, eight from Balochistan and 25 from the NorthWest Frontier Province," he said. "We have blocked six websites associated with the organisation and closed down its five relief camps," he added.

He said 20 offices, 87 schools, two libraries, seven seminaries and a handful of other organisations and websites linked to Jamaat-ud-Dawa had also been shut. The publications banned are Mujalatud Dawa, Zarb-i-Taiba, Voice of Islam, Nanhay Mujahid, Ghazwa and Al Rabta.

Malik did not say whether any legal proceedings had been begun against those detained in the crackdown.

However, sources told Dawn newspaper that the government was considering trying of at least three leaders of the banned groups wanted by India.

Rehman urged India to allow Pakistani investigation officials to visit the country. "India should wait for the results of the investigation. It will reveal all hidden truths. Pakistan and India need to sit together against their common enemy - terrorists," he said.

"We have to prove to the world that India and Pakistan stand together against terrorists," he said.

He reiterated that Pakistan had nothing to do with the attacks. "We condemned the incident on all platforms. Pakistan is also suffering at the hands of militants and that is worrying us."

Responding to a question, he said a joint investigation would "bring quick results".

He said India had handed over 19 pages of information which Pakistan is evaluating as evidence.

Malik ruled out handing over any Pakistani suspect to India. He said Pakistani laws allowed for prosecution of citizens who might have committed crimes elsewhere. He said results of the investigation being conducted by the FIA would be made public and nothing would be concealed.

Punjab to take action against JD: Sherry
2009-01-06
The Punjab government will take action against the banned Jamaatud Dawa (JD), Information Minister Sherry Rehman said in a TV interview on Monday.

Talking to a private TV channel, she said any action by the government must follow certain procedures. Proof against the JD had been shared with the Punjab government, which had assured the federal government of cooperation, she said. "I am absolutely sure the Punjab government will act."

In a statement issued after the interview, Special Assistant to Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Rashid said the provincial government had put five top JD leaders -- Mufti Abdur Rehman, Hafiz Saeed, Ameer Hamza, Colonel Nazir and Yasin Baloch -- under house arrest, sealed 61 offices of the charity and had taken over 19 dispensaries and 10 schools it ran. "Necessary measures are also being taken for assuming control of the central headquarters of Jamaatud Dawa at Muridke," he added.

Talking to India's NDTV channel, Sherry said locating Jaish-e-Muhammad chief Masood Azhar was like looking for a "needle in the haystack".

"He is certainly not strolling around outside my office. If we see him, we will nab him," she said, adding Pakistan was committed to taking action against any non-state actors found involved in the Mumbai attacks.

Islam forbids suicide bombing, say clerics
2007-03-12
Yeah, yeah. Heard it all before. E pur se muove.
DARRA ADAM KHEL: Tribal ulema said on Sunday that suicide bomb attacks were haraam (forbidden) and that Islam did not allow anyone to force people to keep beards. “Militants issuing fatwas and forcing barbers not to shave people’s beards are not right. It’s an un-Islamic act. It’s against Shariah,” said ulema, while addressing a public meeting at Darra Adam Khel in Kohat.

Qaumi Tehrik, Darra Adam Khel, organised the public meeting aimed at discussing law and order in the area, suicide bomb attacks and fatwas for murders. Sheikhul Hadith Maulana Hassan Jan was the chief guest, while Qaumi Tehrik President Said Wazir Afridi presided. The ulema said it was the duty of every male and female Muslim to acquire knowledge and that nobody had the right to compel someone not to receive education. However, they said, female students should wear Islamic dresses and fully observe purdah (veil).

Prominent among others who attended the public meeting were Shiekhul Quran Maulana Amir Badshah, Maulana Mufti Abdur Rehman and Shiekhul Hadith Maulana Akhtar Munir, patron-in-chief of Darul Islamia Darra Adam Khel. A committee, comprising ulema, tribal maliks and political administration officials was formed, to root out crimes from the area. The committee would also work for the elimination of hashish. Local Taliban have been issuing fatwas to murder barbers if they continued shaving beards of their customers.
