2013-03-20
[Dawn] Hundreds of members of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain overran on Monday the last bastion of their rival group, Ansaarul Islam, in Tirah valley of Khyber Agency.

Sources said that Ansaarul Islam chief Maulana Mehboobul Haq and his lieutenant Ezzatullah Hamkhayal also fled their headquarters in Bagh-Maidan and took refuge in Pir Mela locality of Arhanga near the border of Orakzai Agency

They said that Taliban blew up the Muhammadi Markaz in Bagh-Maidan and torched a number of houses, vacated by the supporters of Ansaarul Islam (AI) in the area.

"Taliban are now in full control of entire Bar Qambarkhel area including Bhutan Sharif, Haidar Kandaw, Dray Stany and Dray Plara in Lar (eastern) Bagh along with Bar (western) Bagh that fell to them on Monday after fierce resistance by AI supporters," they added.

Sources said that with the fall of Bar Bagh, Taliban also took control of Angori, Kala Vuch, Arhanga Kandao and Shalobar Warsak heights.

The area is mostly inhabited by Malikdinkhel tribe that till recently was supporting AI in its fight against both Taliban and Lashkar-e-Islam.

Sources said that white flags were fluttering atop most of the houses in the entire Bar Qambarkhel and Malikdinkhel localities to show allegiance of local residents to Taliban.

Mr Hamkhayal, the deputy chief of AI, had only yesterday vowed in his radio broadcast that they would not surrender to Taliban and would fight till last man.

However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
it was learnt on good authority that he along with his elder brother and AI chief had moved out of Bagh-Maidan a day after Lar Bagh area of Bar Qambarkhel fell into the hands of Taliban.

There were also reports that an army helicopter airlifted the two AI leaders, however, a security official in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar

denied such reports and said that security forces were carefully watching the situation in Tirah valley.

Control over the area, would provide Taliban with easy access to Orakzai and Kurram agencies and Afghanistan.

Taliban launched offensive against their one time ally AI in the third week of January after they accused the later of violating an agreement regarding free movement of the former in the region. However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
AI denied that it had struck any such agreement with Taliban.

Their control over AI strongholds in both Lar and Bar Maidan areas of Tirah forced hundreds of Bar Qambarkhel and Malikdinkhel families to shift to Sadda in Kurram Agency

and Sangrha and Meshthi in Orakzai Agency.

Yar Asghar Afridi, a Bar Qambarkhel rustics currently residing in Peshawar, told Dawn that nearly 1,200 of Bar Qambarkhel families reached Durrani camp in Sadda while 300 to 400 Malikdinkhel families were on their way to Kurram Agency via Hangu district

He said that security forces established a registration point for the newly displaced families from Tirah in Dogar area while Orakzai political administration arranged free food and transportation for them.

Govt delaying talks with Taliban, says Fazl
2013-03-11
[Dawn] Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam
...Assembly of Islamic Clergy, or JUI, is a Pak Deobandi (Hanafi) political party. There are two main branches, one led by Maulana Fazlur Rahman, and one led by Maulana Samiul Haq. Fazl is active in Pak politix and Sami spends more time running his madrassah. Both branches sponsor branches of the Taliban, though with plausible deniability...
chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman
Deobandi holy man, known as Mullah Diesel during the war against the Soviets, his sympathies for the Taliban have never been tempered by honesty ...
has said that the federal government is indecisive about peace talks with Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain.

Speaking at a function here at the party's central secretariat on Saturday, he said that Taliban had expressed confidence in the tribal jirga and showed willingness to hold talks, but the government was using delaying tactics. Like Taliban the government should also trust the jirga to initiate dialogue without wasting time, he said.

"I don't know why the government is hesitant," he stated, adding that the JUI-F in collaboration with the tribal elders had started efforts for restoration of lasting peace in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas.

The JUI-F hosted all parties conference in Islamabad on February 28 and asked the country's politicianship to give full authority to 67-member jirga to hold dialogue with the TTP. Taliban had welcomed the joint declaration of the APC.

Mr Rehman said that the government should come out of confusion and authorise the jirga to start negotiations with Taliban. He said that the political parties gave full mandate to the jirga to carry out talks with Taliban, but the government's lukewarm response had disappointed them.

"I am confident that tribal jirga can play crucial role in restoration of peace in the region," he said.

The JUI-F chief condemned Saturday's kaboom inside a mosque in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar

LI commander, seven aides 'kidnapped' in Tirrah Valley
2008-06-01
Armed men from Ansarul Islam (AI) led by Maulana Mehboob kidnapped eight members of the tribal militia Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) including a senior commander on Saturday, sources close to AI said. LI senior commander Ghuncha Gul from Bazaar Zakha Khel in the Tirrah Valley and seven armed men have been moved to an AI base in Tirrah Valley’s Bagh area, sources said. The sources said AI might had kidnapped the eight to avenge the killing of its leader Maulana Mastamin, who died in LI custody in Gogrina Bazaar Zakha Khel a few days ago. However, the LI denied the men had been kidnapped, terming the report a “rumour”. Gul’s nephew also refuted the report. Intelligences sources told Daily Times, however, that Gul and his seven gunmen had been kidnapped from the Qamar Khel Dwa Toi area in Tirrah.

Religious leader shot dead in Khyber Agency by rival militants
2008-05-21
A leader of the Ansarul Islam, a religious group in the Khyber Agency, was killed in a local bazaar on Tuesday.

Maulana Mastamin, an outspoken leader of the group, was killed in Gagrina Bazaar in the Zakha Khel area at 10am. According to eyewitnesses, some unidentified men threw Mastamin out of a vehicle in the bazaar and shot him dead.

The Lashkar-e-Islam (LI), a militant group, has claimed that it had killed Mastamin. A spokesman of the group told Daily Times that Mastamin was a US spy, and that “his killing had become obligatory because he was passing information regarding the Tribal Areas to the United States”.

The LI had reportedly detained Mastamin for three months before killing him. But LI chief Mangal Bagh had denied such reports on his private FM radio. He had been suggesting that Mastamin might have been kidnapped by government agencies with his “own consent”.

Mastamin had been kidnapped from Peshawar near the Hayatabad hospital complex three months ago and reportedly handed over to the LI. He was believed to have been a strong supporter of Ansarul Islam chief Maulana Mehboob, who leads a Deobandi religious group of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl, and is the archrival of the LI in Tirah Valley.

The LI spokesman alleged that Mastamin was instrumental in the fight in Tirah Valley, in addition to supporting the political administration against the LI. The LI charged Mastamin with crimes against the local people for his financial gains.

Mastamin’s father, Muhammad Amin, said they had been targeted for their support to the government. Another Ansarul Islam leader, Haji Ghulam Nabi, was also kidnapped from Peshawar a few days ago.
