PTI offers chairman Senate post to JUI-F's Abdul Ghafoor Haideri |
2021-03-10 |
[DAILYTIMES.PK] The PTI government has offered the Senate deputy chairman seat to its staunch opponent Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam ...Assembly of Islamic Clergy, or JUI, is a Pak Deobandi (Hanafi) political party. There are two main branches, one led by Maulana Fazlur Rahman, and one that was led by Maulana Samiul Haq. Fazl is active in Pak politix and Sami spent more time running his madrassah until his secretary rubbed him out in a jealous rage. Both branches sponsor branches of the Taliban, though with plausible deniability... (JUI). As per details, Defence Minister Pervaiz Khattak has confirmed the development, saying that the ruling party has told senior JUI-F leader Abdul Ghafoor Haideri ![]() that he can be the deputy chairman Senate. Earlier today, Khattak and Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani met Haideri and offered him the position. Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, whose party is member of opposition alliance Pakistain Democratic Movement (PDM), said that he cannot predict who will become Senate Chairman on March 12 nor has he been informed about PDM’s decision about candidates for the top slots of Senate. On the other hand, PDM has decided to field JUI-F candidate for slot of Senate Deputy Chairman while Pakistain Moslem League-Nawaz (PML-N) will get post of Opposition leader in the upper house of parliament. A meeting of steering committee was held under the chair of former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi at his residence. The meeting deliberated on names of candidates for the elections; however an official announcement will be made by PDM head Maulana Fazl-ur Rehman. The elections for the coveted slots of Senate chairman and deputy chairman are slated to be held on March 12 and the opposition is contesting these polls jointly. It has already nominated Pakistain People’s Party (PPP) leader Yousaf Raza Gillani as its candidate for the Senate chairman seat. Earlier, on March 4, Prime Minister Imran Khan ...aka The Great Khan, who who convinced himself that playing cricket qualified him to lead a nuclear-armed nation with severe personality disorders... announced Sadiq Sanjrani as the party’s candidate for chairman Senate. However, alcohol has never solved anybody's problems. But then, neither has milk... from that total of 49, the PML-N’s Ishaq Dar, who was elected senator in 2018, has yet to take oath and is unlikely to be able to vote for the Senate chairman. That means the opposition in reality has only 48 senators, and the Senate itself will have 99 members able to vote. Bear in mind that the the government and opposition’s numbers combined (46+48 = 94) still leave 5 senators to be accounted for. These are the senators who will be key to determining the final result. More on them below. |

Afghan Ulemas once again slam Pakistan’s Maulana Fazal for his remarks |
2017-04-14 |
![]() Speaking during a presser in Kabul ...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the Worldand didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either.... , the Afghan Ulemas said Maulana Fazal has always changed his stances similar as a cheap politician for his own interests. They said Maulana Fazal encourages the Pak Taliban to political negotiations but encourages the Afghan Taliban to Jihad, holy war. According to the Ulemas, Pakistain has received billions from the United States to eliminate the Lion of Islam groups fighting under the umbrella of Jihad but Maulana Fazal endorses Jihad in Afghanistan, raising questions regarding his justifications and asking why he is not declaring Jihad in Pakistain if remaining an ally of the United States is not justified as per the Islamic teachings. This comes as Maulana Fazal had earlier said that the peace would not be achievable in Afghanistan as long as the foreign forces have a presence in the country. Fazal is a pro-Taliban Pak political leader who had endorsed the Taliban extremism in Afghanistan, calling it a legitimate war against the foreign forces. The remarks by Fazal-ur-Rehman earlier in 2015 followed after a meeting with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani ![]() who visited Pakistain on a two-day state visit shortly after taking office as the new President of Afghanistan. |

Commentators Respond to Rehman Justifying War in Afghanistan |
2014-11-16 |
[Tolo News] Despite President Ashraf Ghani ...former chancellor of Kabul University. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. .. 's high expectations for his first trip to Pakistain, ![]() Deobandi holy man, known as Mullah Dieselduring the war against the Soviets, his sympathies for the Taliban have never been tempered by honesty ... , the leader of the Assembly of Islamic Clergy in Pakistain, welcomed him by calling Jihad in Afghanistan justified. But analysts have said Rehman's views should not be a surprise, as empowering extremism is Pakistain's fundamental philosophy. These commentators have said Pakistain's interference in Afghanistan and support for terrorist groups will not be resolved by trips and bilateral talks, but only by pressure from the international community. "These meetings between Afghanistan and Pakistain might end at economic level," political analyst Malek Setiz said. "I believe that from the political and security point of view, these bilateral meetings will have no results; the only way that can improve the political and security situation in the region is through multilateral talks and involvement of the international community for resolving the issue, along with international pressure on Pakistain." Despite that evidence of the Pak military and intelligence services supporting the Taliban and other terrorist groups has been well established, analysts say Pakistain's nuclear power keeps the west from putting too much pressure on its government. "Sartaj Aziz has said that we wish for friendship and cooperation with Afghanistan, but Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman, a member of Pak intelligence, has said that jihad in Afghanistan is permissible and we will continue the battle in Afghanistan," political analyst Ahmad Saeedi said. "It's the two-faced politics of Pakistain that stops from reaching a decision; Paks are still not honest on issues related to Afghanistan and do not want to end the destruction of Afghanistan." During his presidency, President Hamid Maybe I'll join the TalibanKarzai ... A former Baltimore restaurateur, now 12th and current President of Afghanistan, displacing the legitimate president Rabbani in December 2004. He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtunface on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use... traveled to Pakistain 21 times, but was unable to secure peace with the Taliban. Although many remain hopeful for a new beginning under President Ghani, comments like those made by Rehman this week cast doubt on those hopes. |

Consortium of Terror |
2014-11-05 |
Al Qaeda (AQ) AQ is not just a conventional group but the fountainhead of a violent ideology. The organisation was founded at the end of the 1980s by Osama bin Laden while he was in Afghanistan/Pakistan waging war against the Soviets. According to Al Qaeda literature, the organisation's ultimate goal is to establish a hardline global caliphate. It seeks to fight America and her 'apostate' allies in the Muslim world. While the organisation maintains a relatively low profile in Pakistan, it is behind much of the coordination between different jihadi groups in a bid to 'channelise' and 'streamline' the effort. In contrast with many other jihadi groups, the overwhelming majority of their cadres in Pakistan are university graduates hailing from well-off urban families. Al Qaeda regards Pakistan as a 'Daar-ul-Kufr wal harb' (abode of disbelief and war). It classifies the rulers as 'apostates' against whom it is obligatory to rebel and fight. Al Qaeda considers Shias as disbelievers 'in the garb of Islam'. As such, the militant organisation considers it permissible to shed the blood of Shia Muslims and confiscate their wealth. However on strategic grounds, the Al Qaeda chief has advised the operatives not to engage minority groups anywhere in a confrontation unless 'absolutely required' such as in Syria and Iraq. The organisation rejects the concept of nation-states. It seeks to expand the theatre of war, topple governments in Muslim countries and form a global caliphate. Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan Formally launched in 2007, the TTP is effectively Al Qaeda's local franchise in Pakistan. Among anti-state jihadi groups here, TTP maintains the strongest footprint with operatives all over the country. Its stated objective is to turn Pakistan into an 'Islamic state'. Up till its recent splintering, The group regarded the leader of the Afghan Taliban, Mullah Umar, as its supreme leader. As with Al Qaeda, the TTP regards Pakistan as a 'Daar-ul-Kufr wal harb' (abode of disbelief and war) and considers its rulers apostates. While the TTP also considers Shia Muslims to be apostates, there is currently a debate within the organisation on whether a front should be opened against them. The TTP is also increasingly looking at global operations, most recently with top TTP leaders forming splinter group TTP Jamaatul Ahrar; the group has openly pledged their allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) The IMU was founded by Tahir Yuldashev and Jumma Kasimov (both Uzbeks) in 1991. The two had earlier fought in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion of the country. The initial objective of the organisation was to topple Islam Karimov's regime in Uzbekistan and to establish an 'Islamic state' in the country. They also fought alongside the Taliban against the Northern Alliance. Kasimov died in the fighting while Yuldashev, along with his fighters, managed to escape into Pakistan's tribal areas during the 2001 US invasion of Afghanistan. IMU maintains strong contacts with Al Qaeda and Afghan Taliban as well as the TTP. For now, its focus remains on strengthening the group as it prepares for the war in Central Asia. Lashkar-i-Jhangvi An offshoot of the Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), the virulently sectarian LJ was formed in 1996. Its founders Riaz Basra, Akram Lahori and Malik Ishaq had differences with the SSP and believed that the parent organisation had drifted from its original ideals. LJ's primary targets are Shia Muslims and it has indiscriminately targeted them through both assassination and mass casualty attacks. The LJ has killed thousands of people, including many women and children. Its largest attacks to date have been against the Shia Hazaras of Quetta. LJ leaders say their aim is to turn Pakistan into a Sunni Islamic state and consider it a 'priority' to target Shia Muslims. The group also seeks to establish stronger ties with anti-Iran groups operating in the region. Splinters, subdivisions and shadow groups The lines blur when it comes to differentiating between militant groups in Pakistan. They share space, tactics and resources and sometimes, subdivisions are created for specific purposes and for creating confusion in the public's minds. TTP Jamaat ul Ahrar On August 26, 2014, key commanders belonging to the TTP announced the formation of a new group by the name of TTP Jamatul Ahrar, with Maulana Qasim Khorasani as the new Ameer and also comprising other commanders. The new group comprises of members from four of the seven tribal districts bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, namely Mohmand, Bajaur, Khyber and Orakzai. Former TTP spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan, who has been nominated as the spokesman for the splinter group says the new group only wants the Shariah system to prevail in the country. At least 60 people were killed on Sunday November 2, 2014 in a blast near the Wagah border, the responsibility of which was claimed separately by the outlawed Jundullah and TTP-affiliated Jamaat-ul-Ahrar outfits. Ahrar ul Hind The group's name literally means freedom fighters of India (referring to the Indian subcontinent as a whole). According to a commander of a Taliban group, the group derived its name of 'Ahrar' from Majlis-i-Ahrar-ul-Islam, because the Ahraris were against the formation of Pakistan, and they believed that the entire subcontinent was their homeland. The commander said that the group planned to expand their operations to the remaining part of the subcontinent. Ansar al-Aseer A North Waziristan based group primarily concerned with the 'welfare' of locked-up jihadis. Its tasks include intelligence gathering about Pakistani jails and planning jailbreaks to release militants. It is closely allied to TTP and draws many of its fighters from TTP and IMU. Its basic agenda is to free all militants locked up in jails across the country. Lashkar-i-Khorasan Al Qaeda allied group with a single point agenda to track down and eliminate 'spies' in North Waziristan. Ansar al-Mujahideen A small organisation affiliated with the TTP. Its primary focus is targeting armed forces personnel and politicians. As with AQ and TTP, Ansar al-Mujahideen aims to turn Pakistan into an 'Islamic State' and use the state to launch 'jihad' against other belligerent states. Jandullah Al Qaeda affiliated group that started off from South Waziristan. It gained most notoriety for its assassination attempt on the then Corps Commander Karachi Lt Gen Ahsan Saleem Hayat. The outfit has also targeted Shia Muslims and foreign tourists. Not to be confused with the Ghazi Force A group formed after the Lal Masjid operation in Islamabad. It is named after Maulana Abdul Rasheed Ghazi, the former Lal Masjid cleric who was also killed in the operation. Most of its members are relatives and friends of the people killed in the 2007 operation. This group has practically merged with the TTP. Some of its members and sympathisers in and around Islamabad are known to provide intelligence and a footprint in the capital. Members of the group consider it a priority to target former president Pervez Musharraf. The 'Other' Militants Then there are those jihadi groups who, for one reason or another, have historically been classified as 'good' militants by the state. Part of the reason for this is that these groups do not prioritise targeting the Pakistani state and instead turn their energies outwards. However, there is evidence that militants from their ranks can and at times do join other organisations, such as the TTP, AQ and LJ. They also share ideological commonalities with those groups and in some cases even share resources and physical space. Lashkar-e-Taiba Formed in the early 90s in Afghanistan, the group has been primarily operating in Indian-held Kashmir. It seeks to 'liberate' the people of Kashmir from 'Indian oppression' and establish an Islamic state' in the region. It sees India, the United States and Israel as eternal enemies of Islam and boasts about defeating them through armed struggle. Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, the head of Jamat-ud-Dawa denies that his charity is simply a cover for the banned militant outfit. However the lower cadre not only acknowledges their connection with LeT but proudly boast about their operations in India. In line with their particular brand of Salafism, the organisation is strongly opposed to rebellion against the Pakistani state. Members of the group say they are bracing themselves for the Ghazwa-i-Hind ' a grand war in which Muslims will regain control of India, they claim. Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) Jaish-e-Muhammad was formed in 2000 by Maulana Masood Azhar. Shortly after its inception, it effectively swallowed a previously existing but now largely defunct Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM). Its primary goal is to 'liberate' Kashmir from Indian rule and it has carried out various attacks on Indian interests including the 2001 attack on Indian parliament. The group was banned by then President Pervez Musharraf and rebranded itself as Khuddam-ul-Islam. It continues to engage in open fundraising outside many Pakistani mosques on Fridays. Tehreek Ghalba-i-Islam The group emerged as an offshoot of Jaish-e-Muhammad after serious differences emerged between various commanders. TGI is led by Commander Abdul Jabbar and operates primarily in Afghanistan. Publicly, the organisation opposes rebellion against the Pakistani state. It stresses on its cadre to focus on Afghanistan. Jaish al-Adal The group has recently emerged in parts of Balochistan bordering Iran. It has targeted Shia Muslims and claims to be countering Iranian interference in Pakistan. The group also seeks to extend the theatre of war into Iran. Hafiz Gul Bahadur group He is one of the most influential figures in North Waziristan but at the same time, maintains a very low profile. Bahadur is politically affiliated with Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman's Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam. Hafiz Gul Bahadur have been very secretive about their plans. In public, they have always maintained focus on 'liberating' Afghanistan and re-establishing Taliban rule. He is considered a pragmatic figure who knows how to consolidate his position. He has successfully managed his relations with both the military and the TTP. He has never made his position on the Pakistani state public. However one of his most prominent commanders, who has since been killed in a US drone strike, gave an hour-long interview to Al Qaeda's media wing As Sahab in 2009. In the interview he made it clear that he did not have any differences with Al Qaeda or the TTP and that they were his 'brothers'. He had also said that his men would fight against the Pakistan army if it sided with the Americans. Haqqani Network This setup operates primarily in the Eastern Afghan provinces of Khost and Paktika even though it has carried out 'daring' attacks in Kabul. The network has also attempted to assassinate Afghan President Hamid Karzai. The group is currently headed by Sirajuddin Haqqani, one of the sons of veteran Afghan jihadi commander Jalaluddin Haqqani. He is one of the most powerful commanders in the region and maintains good relations with Al Qaeda and the TTP. The group has been silent on their view of the Pakistani state, however when questioned about the TTP, Sirajuddin Haqqani is on record as saying that he does not have differences with his 'brothers'. Their future plans focus on the reinstatement of the Taliban government in Afghanistan. Sipah-i-Muhammad Pakistan The group was formed in the 90s in response to the anti-Shia violence perpetuated by Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP). It maintains a very low profile and seeks to primarily target leaders of anti-Shia militant organisations such as SSP and LJ. Its leader Syed Ghulam Raza Naqvi has been in prison since the mid-90s. Pakistani intelligence agencies claim the group is backed by Iran in a bid to extend its influence in the region. |

Pakistani Taliban Condemn 'Ideological War' in Mali |
2013-02-04 |
![]() French President Francois Hollande ...the Socialist president of La Belle France, and a fine job he's doing of it... visited Mali on Saturday and vowed his troops would stay as long as necessary to continue the fight against Salafist tough guys who had taken control of the country's north for 10 months. An offensive led by French troops has driven rebels from all but one of Mali's major towns, but there are fears the Islamists will now wage a guerrilla campaign from the sparsely populated north. In a video message handed out to journalists in northwest Pakistain, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) front man Ehsanullah Ehsan condemned the French intervention, which has had logistical support from other Western countries. "The French government has attacked mujahedeen in Mali and America has also agreed to support La Belle France. I ask the whole Mohammedan world to unite because it is an ideological war," Ehsan said. He said the forces of "non-believers" were united and urged Mohammedans to come together. "If America is supporting La Belle France on an ideological basis then in same way all Mohammedans should unite and support one another." The TTP has waged a bloody campaign against the Pak state in recent years and the last two months have seen a notable increase in attacks on military posts and personnel. The group grabbed credit for a suicide kaboom on Saturday that killed at least 24 people at a military checkpost near Pakistain's semi-autonomous northwestern tribal belt where Death Eaters have carved out strongholds. In December TTP leader Hakimullah Mehsud, who has a $5 million U.S. government bounty on his head, said the group was open to peace talks but poured scorn on the idea of his men giving up their weapons. Ehsan repeated the conditional offer of negotiations with Islamabad. But he said they could only go ahead if certain politicians, including ![]() ... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf... , who leads leader of the main opposition party, the PML-N, acted as guarantors. "We do not trust the Pakistain army, it has always broken past agreements, even agreements we made with politicians," Ehsan said in the seven-and-a-half minute video, in which he appeared flanked by armed masked men. "We need solid guarantors who can assure us about the army, because the army is the real power in Pakistain." He said the TTP needed assurances from Nawaz and the leaders of the two largest religious parties -- Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam ...Assembly of Islamic Clergy, or JUI, is a Pak Deobandi (Hanafi) political party. Pakistan blasphemy law 'to stand' |
2011-01-11 |
[Al Jazeera] Pakistain's prime minister has ruled out changing the country's controversial blasphemy law that has been linked to the killing of Salman Taseer, the governor of Punjab, who was a fierce critic of the law. Yousuf Raza Gilani told news hounds in the capital, Islamabad, that he has no intention of amending the law, which calls for the death penalty for anyone who insults the Prophet Muhammad. Gilani made the announcement on Sunday after speaking to the leader of one of the country's largest religious parties. "I spoke to Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman on the phone. He asked whether we are making any amendments to the law," Gilani said. "I have said it categorically before, and then the minister of religious affairs also gave a clarification that the government has no such intention." His comments came just hours after tens of thousands of people turned out for a rally organised by Pakistain's religious parties in Bloody Karachi on Sunday. Speakers at the rally warned the government against making any changes to the law, while others condoned the murder of Punjab governor Taseer. Al Jizz's Kamal Hyder said the protests in Bloody Karachi were a 'sign of an increasingly polarised country' Qari Ahsaan, from the banned group Jamaat ud Dawa, addressed the rally from a stage, saying: "We can't compromise on the blasphemy law. It's a divine law and nobody can change it. "Our belief in the sanctity of our prophet is firm and uncompromising and we cannot tolerate anyone who blasphemes. Whoever blasphemes will face the same fate as Salman Taseer." Taseer was killed in the capital, Islamabad, last Tuesday over his views in favour of the blasphemy law's amendment. That liberal stance offended the country's increasingly powerful conservative religious base. Meanwhile, ...back at the ranch... the hunt for Taseer's replacement as Punjab governor continued, with Pak media reporting that a new appointment could be announced later on Monday. Sardar Latif Khosa, Pakistain's former attorney-general and a member of parliament, is the front-runner for the job. The country's blasphemy law was recently used to sentence Asia Bibi, a Christian mother-of-five, to death. Politicians and conservative religious leaders have been at loggerheads over whether Asif Ali President Ten PercentZardari ... husband of the late Benazir Bhutto, who showed remarkably little curiosity about who actually done her in ... , Pakistain's president, should pardon her. Controversy over the law flared when Sherry Rehman, a former information minister and a senior PPP member, tabled a bill in November seeking to end the death penalty for blasphemy. Most of those convicted of blasphemy in Pakistain have their sentences overturned or commuted on appeal through the courts. Pakistain has yet to execute anyone for blasphemy, but Bibi's case has exposed the deep fault-lines in the conservative country. Sunday's protesters held banners in support of the police commando who rubbed out Taseer. "Mumtaz Qadri is not a murderer, he is a hero," said one banner in the national Urdu language. "We salute the courage of Qadri," said another. Omar Waraich, Pakistain correspondent for the UK's Independence newspaper, told Al Jizz the rally was a "display of muscle". "This is a muscle-flexing exercise by the religious right in Pakistain who, after the tragic events of this week when Salman Taseer was assassinated, they feel emboldened by the fact that there have been many cheering that tragedy and are now out to make political capital out of it." |

Fazl must part ways with govt for MMA: Qazi |
2010-07-29 |
[Geo News] Former Amir Jamat-e-Islami Qazi Hussain Ahmed Wednesday said Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman will have to part ways with the government for revival of Muttahida Majlis-e-Ammal (MMA). Talking to media men after a visit to Mansoora Lahore, Qazi Hussain said targeted killings are part of enemy's conspiracy to fan violence. He said granting of extension to the Army Chief has not set a good tradition. Nawaz Sharif's remaining tight lipped on COAS extension is in line with his policy, he observed. He ruled out MMA becoming functional again without Fazl-ur-Rehman and Jamat-e-Islami. |

Liaquat Baloch rules out regrouping of MMA |
2009-10-08 |
[Geo News] Secretary General of Jamat-e-Islami (JI) Liaquat Baloch has said that MMA has disbanded and there is no possibility of its regrouping. He expressed these views while talking to Geo News after his meeting with JUP President Dr. Muhammad Zubair Abul Khair here at Mansoora. He said Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman is an ally of the incumbent government, therefore, there is no possibility of MMA's regrouping. Liaquat Baloch alleged that the country's autonomy has been traded against Kerry-Lugar Bill which should be tabled in the Parliament. This bill can be suspended if the opposition becomes serious, he added. He said the deferment of by-elections is the result of a rift in the government ranks. |
